Ok at least 3 other people already gave this answer but I will give it again. All things being equal, engine, horsepower, torque, weight, tire size, gearing, locker, posi or open rear among other things......and assuming that there would be no loss of traction in 2wd, the 2wd would accellerate faster due to the power lost in 4wd due to the additional moving parts that the power would have to be transferred to get to the front wheels...........are you satisfied now ?

This particular report, deals with the cable failing, not the winch
internals... If you poke around enough, you'll find several other reports of
the 5/16" cable being actually rated just at 9000+- lbs...
Simple use a 3/8" cable, wire or synthetic, and don't worry about it.. I
use a 3/8" synthetic..

Best,
Fred

Subject: Re: PLEASE HELP MY JEEP!!

What kind of Jeep does Kyle have? I may have some D35 parts that he can buy/have (depending on what is broke).

Here's what I have...let me know if you need anything:
D35 Axle assembly, complete drum to drum, with 4.10 gears out of a 87 YJ. This is the non c-clip version of that axle. It has a broken Lockrite (pins snapped) inside it right now. I have the spider gears and old cross shaft sitting in my garage.

I had wanted to pull the Lockrite (to be warranteed and dealt with separately), re-install the spider gears and sell the axle (cheap) as a complete unit.

Haven't gotten any bites on that, so if the spider gears get Kyle back on the road, just let me know.

Maybe someone has an auto trailer they could lend to get the Jeep where you need it to go. Alternately, how about a uhaul car hauler. I think the in-town rate is pretty low on those, provided you have something to pull it with.

Good luck!

On my way to work this morning all of a sudden there was thumping sound and I couldnt move any more. It appears my D35 rear blew out. I had to put it in 4wd and for about 10mph for about a quarter mile to get to work.

Can anybody help me with a spare and help me put it in?? I cant even get home this afternoon and I dont have the money right now to pay the dealer to put a new one in... I can tell anything about the problem by looking. But if I was to guess the gears inside broke off. It jumps when im moving.

Please Help me.... :(

If ANYONE can help please email me or call me on my Cell at 602-348-6457 or my Direst line at work at 480-481-7752

Right now im at 60th st and Thomas. Butif anyone can help I can have it towed some where.

Thanks in advance,
Kyle

The study also mentions issues with stalling and
overheating/overloading of electrical components. Milemarker owning
the website certainly casts doubt about the accuracy of the study.
But I know some Camel Trophy guys that would concur with the stalling
and overheating issues - at least for the Warn models (other than the
8274) that were around in the early 90's.

Hey Gang,

Looks like things aren't falling into place for Kyle yet... the axle I had lined up for Kyle costs $300 and I just spoke to Kyle and he would prefer to use donated used parts instead of having to spend $300 for a low mileage complete axle (I don't own the axle in question; a friend of mine does). Perhaps he can repair whatever is broken with less expense...

If you have D35 parts you can donate... please shoot Kyle an email and let him know what you have... he is on his way home with the tow truck and his rig.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

Joe West

Kyle,

I have a complete D35 axle... drum to drum ready to bolt in... nothing to assemble and it only has about 10,000 miles on it.

If you are interested... contact me at (602) 616-0785 or send me an email to my work (this) or home (arizonajeep@cox.net) email address.

Thanks in advance,
Kyle

That definitely casts doubt on the report...(Even though its deceiving, its
pretty clever of them to do that- but you think Warn would have filed suit
if the results were bogus.) Thanks for the info.

I was going to try to get a hold of one before Moab next week, but I think I
will wait until I get back. Some of the other winches out there have some
pretty good track records with members and are a bit easier on the ole
wallet too. Im just doing my research now. Havent decided on a brand yet.

Thanks again,

Kyle,
If we can get someone to lend a flatbed trailer. We can tow it over to my house. Dobson and Guadalupe, I will offer my garage up for an emergency wrenching party. Complete with air tools/welder what ever.

I am available all night. "I have to stay up anyway"

Thanks in advance,
Kyle

Where are ya? Need anything, tools wise while you assess the damage?

Don't know much about D35's, but I am very good at standing around
holding up a beer and nodding while someone who knows what they are
talking about identifies the problems. I can even say stuff
like "Yep, that sounds about right to me," and "Yep, that's what I
would do."

Actually I can be a little more helpful than that.

Let us know.

I'm actually in town and thinking of going out tommorow. What I wanted to do though was use the Jeep to get a bit off road and spend the day mineral and rock hunting. Didn't really have any hard or much Jeeping in mind, just chillin by a creek and digging around. I live in S. Chandler. Shoot and email if anyone would like to head out. Thinking about going up 87 past 4 peaks. Would like to up past new river but that's one hell of a drive for me...

Date: Tue Apr 8, 2003 5:46pm
Subject: [TR] Technical Workshop - Saturday, April 26, 2003 - Reminder

Hello All,

Joe West is leading a Technical Workshop trail run on Saturday, April 26, 2003.

When: April 26th, 2003 at 9:00am
Where: My Home
Rating: 2.0-
Length: 6 hours
CB Channel:

I will continue to schedule kill switch technical workshops every few months until everyone who wants to have an anti-theft kill switch installed has one. I will then schedule them once a year or so. I still have people contacting me who want to install a kill switch so I have scheduled this third workshop for April 26th at 9:00am.

This is kill switch technical workshop number 3. The purpose of this workshop is threefold:

1. To keep your rig from being a theft statistic.
2. To show you how easy it is to install a kill switch.
3. To spend some fun time just hanging out with Jeepers.

I have picked a date for the third kill-switch workshop a few months out to enable people to sign up over a longer period of time. I will update the information in this run as necessary, but for the most part all of the information you will need is here. The limit for the number of rigs we can fit in my yard and cul-de-sac is 30 so this will be the maximum number of people who can sign up. Please note that YOU will be doing the work in this workshop and I will be guiding, assisting, teaching, and testing your installs (and fixing any problems which may occur).

All short wheel base Jeeps such as Wranglers and CJs, Willys, etc can choose either a kill switch OR a combination hoodlock and kill switch. Since short wheel base Jeeps do not come from the factory with a hood lock, I would recommend people install the combination hood lock kill switch.

All long wheelbase Jeeps such as Grand Cherokees, Cherokees, Wagoneers and other vehicles that already have an INSIDE hood release will only need to purchase a kill switch.

The price for the HoodLock/Kill Switch is $43 and includes everything needed to install the kit.

The price for the kill switch alone is $15, and includes everything you will need to install the switch.

Please note: I am NOT making any money on the kill switches and hood locks... the charge just covers the cost of the hardware with a couple of dollars extra thrown in to cover supplies. I do this workshop for fun and to help people out... not to make money.

Unfortunately, because of problems I had with purchasing hoodlock/killswitches for people who didn't show and didn't pay (leaving me stuck with the hardware), it will be necessary for people to pay in advance. To pay for your kill switch, sign up for this run and then send a check for the appropriate amount to my home address shown below. In the memo area on your check, please put kill switch. No matter how early you send out your payment, I will not cash the check until I actually purchase the kill switch and or hood lock.

The kill switch type will be determined by the year, make, and model of the Jeep being fitted with the switch. For those members with Wranglers/CJs and other SWB Jeeps with no hood locks, I will encourage a group buy of a hood lock kill switch combination. Once I determine how many people sign up and what kind of vehicles they have, I will put together a list of required materials and purchase them for everyone. Individual members can choose what kind of kill switch they want or I will determine it for them based on vehicle type if they have no preference. I will provide all tools and will purchase bulk materials (wires, switches, solder, connectors, electrical tape, zip ties, etc) which everyone will split the cost of. If you are interested, please sign up.

VERY IMPORTANT:
All Participants in the clinic MUST give me the following information:

1. Year and model of vehicle on which we will be installing the kill switch
2. Do you have a FACTORY service manual OR a service manual with wiring schematics for your vehicle?
3. Which of the following tools can you bring: drill, drill bits, wire cutters, metric and/or standard socket set, wire strippers, wire crimpers, nylon ties, electrical tape, soldering iron/solder, long extension cords, multi-outlet adaptors/short extension cords, volt-ohm meters or DVM, blowdryer (for heat-shrink tubing).

VERY VERY IMPORTANT:
The clinic will be held at my home in Mesa Arizona on Saturday morning, April 26th starting at (for now, this may change) 9:00AM. I believe that you can plan on spending a good 6 hours at my home, and hopefully, if everything goes well we will finish around noon on Saturday.

My home address is:

649 S. 30th Circle, Mesa, Arizona 85204.

My home phone is:
(480) 325-9419

My cell phone is:
(602) 616-0785

You can obtain very good directions from Yahoo maps... but a brief set of directions are as follows:

Take 60 headed East and get off on Gilbert Road.
Head North on Gilbert Road (Left) to Broadway Road.
Head East on Broadway (right) to 30th street (30th street is the FIRST residential street you can make a right on just past the light at Lindsay... do not turn into the small community just east of Walgreens.
Head South (right) on 30th Street.
30th Street dead ends in my Cul-De-Sac and my home is the one with all the palm trees in the yard.

PLEASE PLEASE park along 30th street and WALK to my home. The reason that I am asking this is because I want to group like vehicles together to simplify installations. After everyone parks along 30th street, I will have a short meeting on my front porch and then I will ask all YJ owners to go get their vehicles and we will place them in one location in my yard. I will then ask all TJ owners to go get their vehicles and will park them in another location... and so on until all vehicle types are grouped together in my yard or cul-de-sac.

After everyone is grouped together, I will walk everyone through the steps of installing kill switches... and we will work together as a team to get them installed. To avoid having any electrical problems, you will be required to disconnect the positive lead on your battery BEFORE we do any work on your vehicle.

Please plan on bringing a cooler with drinks, cups and/or snacks if you will need them.

I will post this entire post to the "trip" on Azvjc.org if people need to reference it at a later date.

If you have suggestions and you see something I have forgotten, please let me know.

And last but not least, if you would like to come hang out and HELP or just watch and learn... I'm sure we could use all the help we can get. Everyone interested is welcome to show up.

If you have any questions, please contact me via email at:

arizonajeep@cox.net

Kind Regards,

Joe West
