One word of warning: Don't try this on any aluminum parts. It will
permanently stain them black.

Er... So I've heard. Never done this myself. No-siree!

It does. I applied it to my dad's aluminum bellhousing. I think it oxidizes
the alum only skin deep though it will rub off with your finger but a brush
and some elbow grease and the black will dim with time it goes away;). I
imagine if you leave it on for an eternity it would make it darker than his
turned out :? Be super careful with this stuff though it is truly nasty and
not safe for anything organic.

Mike & all,
Problem was, when the ZJ was first started (cold) it would not idle/run.

Here is what I did:

1. Had the dealer perform their fuel system service: $250.00
2. I replaced the Spark plugs (Champion) $12.00
3. I replaced the Cap and Rotor (both bad) $16.00
4. I replaced the Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) $38.00
#1 helped, but it still idled poorly when the engine was cold.
#2 again helped, but still had the idle problem - but engine didn't die.
#3 and #4 were were done at the same time, so I don't know for sure which one actually fixed the problem, but the IAC Valve was very dirty with years of carbon built up on it, so I'm guessing that was the problem. I should add that the computer did NOT show any error codes for the IAC Valve, and again I am guessing that it was still working, but not correctly because it was sooooo dirty.
I will be going back to discuss this with the dealer. Will let you all know what I find out.

Thanks to all that responded. The AZVJC comes through again!

All, the XJ is a 93. I tried the suggested fan clutch trick. How can I be sure that the 93's had a fan clutch? Or did all XJ's have a clutch. You guys were all correct. When the car is very hot, I can spin the fan with no resistance at all. From what I hear, this means bad fan clutch right? If I heard everyone correctly, it should be impossible to spin when the car is hot but easy when the car is cold. So, just out of curiousity, how much to fan clutch's cost? It doesn't look like it's going to be that hard to get to. It looks pretty straight forward. Is the clutch a dealership item or a parts shop (or junkyard) item? Thanks in advance everyone.

If it works off temp, then when cool, the fan would turn very slowly.....as the coil in the fan clutch gets hotter, it locks the fan in more and more until it is completely locked and turns as fast as the engine.

Uhh, not sure how the crank fan works on the 93 XJ. Don't know if it's temp controlled or not. What purpose does the clutch serve? Does it slow the fan at higher speeds? I'll try and turn it hot. Not sure what else to do besides that though! Thanks.

It is possible for a t-stat to be put in backwards, but you'd run hot all the time. It sounds like your fan clutch is the culprit. Does it operate off of temperature? Mine does on my 98 ZJ. With the vehicle hot, turn off the engine, the fan should be hard if not impossible to turn if the fan clutch is working.

Mike.
No, it cools down on the road. Both fans are working properly. The aux fan comes on when the ac is turned on as it should. It also comes on at about 215 degrees as it should. My last resort is to check the fan clutch. This may sound stupid, but can a radiator (and thermostat) be installed incorrectly? Can a thermostat be put in upside down or something? I wonder if it was a bad thermostat from the start. It is strange though. We don't really know what to try next except take it back to Hawkes on Monday. Odd huh.

Does it overheat if your moving down the road? I would also suspect a cooling fan issue if it gets hot idling and not when driving.

Anyone have an opinion on this? My buddy's radiator was getting a little old and cruddy. Well, the car would overheat every now and then. We assumed that the thermo was sticking. Well, he took the think to Hawkes Radiator and they put a new radiator and thermo in there. Now it overheats! If you sit there and idle the temp keep climbing. Anyone reason why this would be? The temp stayed pretty steady at 210 before, why would it get worse with the new radiator?
Thanks in advance.

My Guess would be that it had just happened and the driver is off
seeking medical help or help to upright it. I would think that if it is
there for a few more days it will be missing quite a few parts. This
looks like it was over off of FR42. If the forest service gets involved
someone may get a fine for littering or illegal dumping. And if they
remove it that will be one hell of a tow bill.

Scott,

Let me see if I got this straight. Your buddy took the Jeep to Hawks radiator for an overheating problem. They sold you a new radiator and thermostat and installed it. You still have the same problem? I would have taken it back and said that that was not the problem. I might even go so far as asking for my old radiator back because they misdiagnosed the problem.

You are correct about the characteristics of the fan clutch. Hot = hard to move. Soft = spins easily.

Stu, you reminded me of an example of how suggestions made during

at the second meeting. During the first meeting at the Phoenix location,
we had submitted a request to preserve access to the trails in the
southwest part of the White Tanks. That suggestion did not show up
in the documentation provided at the second meeting. Fortunately, my
memory was working that night so I detected the omission and I asked
them to add it back in. This is just one example of why it's is important for
everyone who attended the first meeting to follow through and attend the

Subject: Anti-wrap bar done

Well I finally finished it this weekend. Some good pain pills and
anti-flamitories got me through it with my broken ribs. I ended up doing a
full ladder type. I had to do the ladder verses the single bar mainly
because my leafs are on top the axel and the only way to triangulate about
the axel center line was to put a bar below the axel and I fingered if I
have to have one below the axel then putting one above the axel to help take
up the torque was no big deal. It works great! You should hear these
swampers bark when I pop the clutch on the street! Hehehe. You can also see
it did not effect my articulation at all. The picture of me on the ramp is
at full street pressure and I am still well over 1000 RTI.

Roger....good catch on your part! Yes, I agree, that it is very
important to follow through with the meeting so, as you said, you can
verify that these important items have been properly captured and will
be considered in the new plan.

Stu, you reminded me of an example of how suggestions made during
the first meeting somehow got omitted from the documentation provided
at the second meeting. During the first meeting at the Phoenix
location,
we had submitted a request to preserve access to the trails in the
southwest part of the White Tanks. That suggestion did not show up
in the documentation provided at the second meeting. Fortunately, my
memory was working that night so I detected the omission and I asked
them to add it back in. This is just one example of why it's is
important for
everyone who attended the first meeting to follow through and attend the
second meeting.

I had the same problem and when I pulled the pistons out two of them
had broken piston rings. Other than blow-by and oil in the air filter
everything ran very well, it didn't smoke at all. I'm sorry I don't
know any mechanics in town. Good luck.

Ah Ha !!!........ you guys are actually "listening" GOOD JOB!!!! Yes,
Roger, you are absolutely right. I caught this omission at the Wickenburg
meeting also. I was told to add it into another alternative.............
what I did was constructed an alternative with ALL our plans in it and
submitted it as an "alternative plan"........ including White Tanks,
although they have not done an official route inventory of this
area............. probably won't at this time with having the OHV funds
taken. However, our GPS identification should still be noted on the
planning data.

Sorry I didn't make it to the Phoenix meeting.......... had plans to but I
guess everything finally caught up to me because I was simply exhausted that
evening. I could NOT make myself drive to north Phoenix and then home again
late..........

We MUST ALL submit our "desired" plans to Phoenix FO......... whether we
were in attendance at any of the meetings or not.

DON'T STOP THE COMMUNICATIONS NOW.........................

I'm out of here for some relaxation................ National RCAA Rock
Crawl in Reno. Back next Monday..... late.

Take care, Sandee

Mine is starting to ooze and I need to replace it. Where is everyone
going for these? I want an all metal replacement, but not sure on
aluminum or brass.

Thanks,
Aaron

Roll down your windows, install some truck fans (available
at NAPA), spray bottle of rubbing alcohol, ice cold drink
in a small rubbermaid thermos inbetween the seats... lemme
see, oh yes, for when you are stopped at a traffic light
or in a traffic jam on I-10, install misters.

Real Jeeps Don't Have Air Conditioners! =)

I know you are not supposed to use part time 4WD on dry pavement,
but...

All other things being equal, if I floor the gas pedal, from a dead
stop, on dry pavement, would I get the same acceleration if the Jeep
was in 4WD-high or in 2WD? Acceleration, not torque or HP, etc

(Am looking for the effect of variable amount of traction on a set
amount of torque.)
