I believe this is a driving style issue more than anything else. Even spooled, if you coast thru turns, it isn't noticeable. When I get to upgrade, I would prefer a super35 with a spool, then it always acts the same all the time. You just have to learn how to drive it.

This is true, Michael.

I have been listening to the nay-sayers (is that spelled correctly?) in regards to Warn's 5 on 4.5" TJ hubs and how they will break on the trail, etc. Many of my friends in CA were running them before I installed mine. After I heard from them about the number of trips they all had taken to Johnson Valley and the fact that only one hub had actually suffered damage (the same number still holds to date), I installed mine without worrying about the "you are going to break" comments.

As I said in regards to the 4.88 gears, anything can break.....but some things don't actually break as often as some would have you believe. Randy S. indicated that he too hadn't seen the type of breakage that these gears supposedly have.

Anthony,

No doubt, someone has broken a few 4.88 gear sets somewhere along the way. However, this has been discussed at length on a number of on-line forums and the question was simple….”If you have broken a set of 4.88 gears, please post the details here.” Hundreds and hundreds of people viewed the thread and there were no first hand experiences posted. However, as always, the son of my ex-wife’s great uncle had a room mate in college who’s girl friend’s younger brother’s best friend knew someone in the 4WD club that heard a guy in the next county broke a set.

Anything can break, but the hype given to 4.88 gears being too small and popping is more of a wives tale than a factual piece of information.

correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the chances of stripping the gears on 4:88's with a 4.0 are high. I was told that from a member of the "Lo-Rangers" . I don't know much about that area of the jeep but I'm ready to learn.

Cody,

Isn't it past your bedtime?

Go to bed!

As far as your questions go... I would recommend that you put 4.88's in your rig. There are some discussions about the pinion being too small on the 4.88:1 gearset which could lead to failure... however; I have yet to hear of a single instance of this happening. I installed 4.56:1 gears in my rig and if I had to do it over; I'd go with 4.88:1 or even 5.13:1 (I have D44s... you could not get 5.13:1 for your rig)

Kind Regards,

Airaid uses a K&N filter (or at least mine did)... they just add the plumbing to adapt it to a stock TJ.
So to answer your question; there are no differences.

Alright guys, I need some suggestions. I can't decide whether I just
want new springs for my jeep or if I should go all out and do a
spring over. I have heard just a little about both (good and bad). I
have put it off long enough.

I have a '78 CJ7 with a V8 (so power is not an issue on the road,
however this will put more strain on the axels if I'm not mistaken).
I am planning on purchasing new tires really soon (per my past post
asking your opinion on that) and was going with 33 MTR's, however I
had a bug put in my ear to do the spring over and jump to 35's. FYI:
I use my jeep 90% of the time for rock crawling and the remaining 10%
playing at the dunes (Thanksgiving).

I would love to hear all the information you could possibly throw at
me! Facts, personal experience, articles, the works. If I do this I
will be upgrading A LOT and want to make sure I know all the ins and
outs before I throw down a bunch of money (I am all too aware of the
can I am opening, I have prepared myself for a big bill).

I appreciate any input!

Thanks,
Nichole

Duffy,

I was in your group last weekend with the Silver TJ. We talked a
little about some rocker guards. I'd like to get those done in the
near future. I think you said you were going out of town relatively
soon, but when you get back I'd like to help/learn as much as I can
about the building process.

BTW, I have a few skimpy unmentionables, but I'm not quite ready to
share with the WHOLE club, so let keep the sweeping pics to a minimum
LOL!

Thanks

Hey Nichole,

Here is my experience from jumping in over my head and going SOA when
everyone said I shouldnt(couple years ago), while this is all on a
YJ, most of it still applies to yuor jeep. Ill start by sayin soa is
awesome. Right now I am sitting on stock wrangler rear 5 leaf packs
with an addtl main leaf, and it flexes and wheels great.

Here is what I did, I just get the RE spring perches weld them on top
of the axle, leave the fronts parrallel to the old ones but the rears
you will need to tilt up for pinion angle. With a CV shaft, you will
want to point it 1-2 degrees below the t-case output. For brakelines,
talk to Barry at 4 wheelers to get the right parts, he gave me a
great idea and that is to run a single softline to the center of the
axle, then run hardlines to the sides, then softlines to the
calipers, sort of like the rear is done from the factory on vehicles
with rear discs. This allows the use of stock parts since the center
of the axle doesnt droop out near as much as the outsides do, it also
keeps the brakelines out of the tires:). For shock mounts I used F-
250 Shock towers up front(Idea courtesy Steve Meyer) and the little
stud that comes with ranchos for the bottom with Rancho 9012's in frt
and in the rear I run 9112's with the same bottom mounts as the front
and M.O.R.E upper shock extenders. Boomerang Shackles all the way
around. Oh yeah, you will definitely need a traction bar eventually.
I had John at Hunter Offroad make one and it worked great. As far as
steering issues, Im not sure what the CJ guys are doing about that??
I dont know if the springs would hit the draglink or not, you may
have to get some Dana 44 knuckles and go hi-steer. And if you step up
to 35s, youll at least want to get one piece shafts for the rear and
get the upgraded shafts for the front that use the 297x joint, or you
could swap in some 60s like I did:), but I dont think you prepared
yourself for that big of a bill!!

Here are a few links to get the gears turnin.

While you and I have never met, I have lerked here enough to know seem

"If you can afford it; GET THE RUBICON.." you say? Well being
naturaully curious about all things Jeep, I do a little research.
D44s, not one but 2! Air lockers, not one but two! 64 : 1 crawl
ratio out of the box. Hah! I think too good to be true, must drive
like hell.

So today I take a little test drive (in my best creepy drug dealer
voice, "It's OK, just take one hit off the crack pipe, it won't hurt
you. Mwahhhaaaahhaaaahaaaa."). OhMyGodIMayBeHooked. Wow.

But surely the bank won't give a loan for such a vehicle. Right? I
just got off the phone with them: "Would you like us to mail the check
to you or to the dealership?"

Did I mention I am getting it at invoice?

How many Rubies are there in the group?

Can't....

Stop....

Twitching.....

Must Sit Down.....

Nichole,

As you can see, the SOA has it's advantages, but requires a considerable
amount of work. I put a 4.5" spring-under lift on my CJ7. I also added
some longer shackles, so I'm sitting a little more than 5" taller.
Plenty of room to fit 35" tires underneath. I also added a drop pitman
arm and some extended brake lines, but that was the extent of it. There
wasn't anything that I couldn't do myself, and the only tools I needed
were some wrenches (and a breaker bar for those rusted bolts) and a
hi-lift jack. Oh, and a pitman arm puller from autozone.

It's been 8 years since installing the lift, and I've been very happy...

I have a large leak in my t-case. The fluid comes out of the slip yoke. The more fluid I have in the case the more it will leak until the case is out of tranny fluid. I just replaced the rear out put seal on my np231. looking at th seal it appeared to me the seal was made to keep stuff out not in (this is only a guess i'm still learing jeep). Is there another seal deeper in the t-case that keeps the tranny fluid in? IF so could this repair be done by someone who is learning jeeps? or should I just break down and take it to the shop? Thanks

Hi Jonathon,

I've torn apart a few 231's and the seal at the output is the only seal on the rear output. The rubber part with the spring goes towards the inside but since there is only one way to press it in you couldn't have gone wrong there. It's possible that it got damaged while you installed it or you may not have the right part number. You may have even lost the little round spring that keeps tension on the rubber part allowing fluid to easily leak out.

I do allot of gear for the club members at the best price I have seen. About 1/2 what 4 wheelers will charge. The only problem I have is I broke my ribs about two weeks ago and will not be able to install them for you for about 2-3 more weeks. If you can what that long I can save you some bucks.

Hello Gang,
I am ready to have my 4.56 gears installed. I have an 87 XJ with a D30 front, and a D35-non c-clip in the rear. I have the gears and master rebuild kits from Randy's. Can you recommend a good and not too expensive shop in the valley. I have been told that 4wheelers supply is not too bad. I will be delivering the complete vehicle, for the axles are not out. Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,
Casper

Subject: [Tech] 99 Wrangler - SYE installed, yet still vibrating

I have a 3 inch RE lift. After installation I had a good amount of vibration, so I had a local shop put in a SYE kit and the new CV style shaft. I still have a lot of vibration between 53-60 miles per hour. Is this normal? I figured the vibrations should be gone completely.
Any advice would be great.

SOA also gives you a nice cadillac ride. A spring under lift will ride
rougher than stock.

Here are a few links to get the gears turnin.

help out with the project.

Ryan,

It sounds like the pinion angle is not set right. You should use an angle finder to check it out. Place the angle finder on the driveshaft and measure the angle. Then rotate the driveshaft until one of the ujoint caps at the pinion is vertical and place a socket inside one of the ujoint caps. Set the angle finder on this socket and measure the angle. The angles ideally should be between 1 degree lower at the pinion than the driveshaft to zero degrees difference. The pinion angle should NEVER be any higher than the driveshaft angle.

With adjustable control arms it's pretty easy to adjust the pinion angle until you get the angles set correctly. An angle finder will set you back about $12 at Home Depot. Attached to this message you will see a picture of correct CV driveshaft geometry as well as what the angle finder looks like.

Regards,

Scott K
