Thanks for the response everyone. I did not add anyone's name that offered
the first time as it was a month ago and things come up. I got several
e-mails that I was missing a name off the first list. I again want to thank
everyone that is taking their time to work at this event. I hope the people
that are coming understand the amount of experience this group represents.

Cody,

Isn't it past your bedtime?

Go to bed!

As far as your questions go... I would recommend that you put 4.88's in your rig. There are some discussions about the pinion being too small on the 4.88:1 gearset which could lead to failure... however; I have yet to hear of a single instance of this happening. I installed 4.56:1 gears in my rig and if I had to do it over; I'd go with 4.88:1 or even 5.13:1 (I have D44s... you could not get 5.13:1 for your rig)

Kind Regards,

I have put allot of 4:88s in Dana 30s and have not seen that problem yet. I would not go lower then 4:88s though as you are correct they pinion gets really small on a 5:13 and very week. There really is not a big difference in size between a 4:56 pinion gear and a 4:88.

I have an opportunity to get in on a business venture involving a DOT
approved brake hose manufacturing machine. It will do braided teflon and
conventional rubber hoses. After crimping, the hoses are tested to
3000PSI for two minutes. Old ends can be reused or new ends can often be
obtained. ANY combination of fitting can be installed to user
specification. Provided the pricing to end users is within reason, do
you feel this would be a good venture to get involved with? We would
sell locally as well as over the internet.

Kent,

If you get the D44 rear axle, you get the 3.73 gears. When I purchased my
TJ... I was forced to get the 30 tire package with the Dana 44 rear axle;
I'm not sure if this is still true. Regardless... whatever you do;
definitely get the Dana 44 in the rear. You are correct that the newest
transmission is the NV3550 and I'm thinking (but I am not absolutely sure)
that the first year for this transmission was 2000.

There are TONS of TJ resource pages... just do a google search for TJ and
you will be overwhelmed. Our own Chris Krieg and Stu Olson have great
pages...

The auto transmission is a preference thing... if you like automatics; get
it. If you like to shift; get the manual. I personally prefer the manual
transmission... but plenty of people like automatics.

Pearls of wisdom:

Make sure your rig has the following options:

Dana 44 rear axle
Air conditioning

Don't waste your money on the Sahara package.

If you can afford it; GET THE RUBICON... it IS by and large; the absolute
best of all worlds... you CANNOT build a rig like the Rubicon for less money
than the Rubicon costs (assuming you can get the Rubicon at invoice).

Joe West

Hey all,

I am considering getting a TJ pretty soon, to be a light trail
wheeler/daily driver. It's not that I don't love my CJ, but I would
like to actually go on a trail run every now and then, instead of sit
in the garage and try and put the CJ back together.

Don't know much about TJs though, so I have a couple questions. Is
the D44 rear axle part of a package or a stand alone option? Does
the trailer towing package get you 3.73 gears? Someone told that the
5 speed that is used now is a NV3550, what year did they start
putting those in. Any TJ resource pages? Is the auto that is
offered any good? Does it have an overdirve? Any other pearls of
wisdom?

Thanx

Anthony,

No doubt, someone has broken a few 4.88 gear sets somewhere along the way. However, this has been discussed at length on a number of on-line forums and the question was simple&.If you have broken a set of 4.88 gears, please post the details here. Hundreds and hundreds of people viewed the thread and there were no first hand experiences posted. However, as always, the son of my ex-wifes great uncle had a room mate in college whos girl friends younger brothers best friend knew someone in the 4WD club that heard a guy in the next county broke a set.

Anything can break, but the hype given to 4.88 gears being too small and popping is more of a wives tale than a factual piece of information.

Hello All,

Brad Rogers is leading a Sunflower Mine Loop trail run on Saturday, April 5, 2003.

When: 8:00am Meet at last gas station on Hwy. 87 heading towards Payson; across from Casino (just past Fountain Hills)
Where: SunFlower Mine Loop
Rating: 3.5-
Length: Most of the day
CB Channel: 4

We had such a good trip the first time I just thought it would be fun to take a group up. Great adventure trip where you can try out your rock gaurds as well as your camera skills. If the creek is flowing your in for a wet ride, as well as some mine discovery. I believe we checked out 6 mines that were at least 100 yds long each, so bring a spot light because a flash light just doesn't cut it. Also bring some sandwiches because the trip can take a while if your into the mine thing.

The Sunflower Mine Loop is a fun trail that offers a little something for everyone. It takes 3 – 4 hours to complete allowing for time to poke around and explore. The loop starts as an easy 2.5 trail that winds along a hillside and slowly descends into the canyon. After crossing a bridge you continue up the canyon until you arrive at the Sunflower Mine site. The mine’s processing building is still standing and is in decent shape. Stock vehicles can make this section of the loop easily, however the next section requires higher ground clearance and aggressive tires.

After leaving the mine the trails continues up a shady canyon becoming more tight and challenging as it runs across and up a rocky creek bed. The bed is usually dry but can be very slippery when water is running. After awhile you make a hard right turn up a steep rock wall obstacle and continue to climb a loose rocky road out of the canyon and into the pines and junipers. At the top the trail continues with some washed out sections, passes a couple of more mine shafts, and gradually becomes easier as you return to the loops starting point.

Remember to pack water, a lunch, and bring your camera.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Hi Donald,

It depends on which BBQ you are talking about... we used 4 Wheeler's ramp at
the last BBQ and we used John's ramp
at the BBQ before last.

If you want to paypal some assistance to support John in replacing his
stolen ramp... you can paypal funds to:

arizonajeep@c...

Anything that anyone can send will be much appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

Subject: Squeaky belt

This is only off topic because it's about a Ford Explorer. My buddy who likes my Jeep (only said to keep it Jeep related) has an Explorer. Every time it rains or he washes his truck his belt squeaks for 1-5 minutes depending on how wet it is. The belt is as tight as it should be, but we're not sure what else it could be. Is there a way to fix this or does he just have to "deal with it"? He's trying to sell it so he's working out this little kink to avoid someone not buying it on account of it squeaking. TIA guys/gals.

Anthony,

No doubt, someone has broken a few 4.88 gear sets somewhere along the way. However, this has been discussed at length on a number of on-line forums and the question was simple….”If you have broken a set of 4.88 gears, please post the details here.” Hundreds and hundreds of people viewed the thread and there were no first hand experiences posted. However, as always, the son of my ex-wife’s great uncle had a room mate in college who’s girl friend’s younger brother’s best friend knew someone in the 4WD club that heard a guy in the next county broke a set.

Anything can break, but the hype given to 4.88 gears being too small and popping is more of a wives tale than a factual piece of information.

correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the chances of stripping the gears on 4:88's with a 4.0 are high. I was told that from a member of the "Lo-Rangers" . I don't know much about that area of the jeep but I'm ready to learn.

Joe West

Most likely a fuel delivery problem. Fuel pump.

I need some help here..

My 95 YJ 2.5L, has begun to act up. It is very hard to start. It will crank but it will not fire right off. Sometimes it will take five minutes to get it to fire. I just changed the Distributor cap and rotor to see if that was it. but it is still doing it. I checked the spark plugs (Bosch Platinum) they look fine but they are over a year old. My next step is going to be new Sparkplug wires. Am I heading in the right direction. Could it be a Fuel pump? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Smitty
