Scott,
Yes, some play seems normal. I've torn apart a few of these including mine when it only had a few thousand miles.

I just installed a sye kit on my 93 wrangler, after a test drive i
crawled under to check for any leaks and noticed that the output
shaft to the front axle has an in and out movement of 30 thousands.Does anyone know if this is normal,as there is no thrust
washer or any way to adjust this that i could see?
Thank You for all your help. Scott C.

Subject: [az_vjc] Jeep is no longer going to make the Rubicon!!!
DETROIT Bowing to pressure from a lawsuit and citing a mixture of
driveability, efficiency and environmental concerns, Daimler Chrysler
today announced that the short-lived production run of the Wrangler
Rubicon will cease in April. The Rubicon model of the popular sport
utility had additional equipment meant to make it more capable in off
road situations. "The Rubicon package has proven to be a failure in
the actual environment where the vehicle is being driven." said
Dieter Baumgartner, Jeep Division Director of Product
Placement. "Many of our customers have had serious complaints about
the steering system at slow speeds and with the rising cost of
gasoline, the excessive fuel mileage." Baumgartner continued.
Kimberley White of Silver City, New Mexico bought a Wrangler Rubicon
in January, 2003. She and others are joining in a class action
lawsuit against Daimler Chrysler in an attempt to return what she
claims is a defective vehicle. "At first we really liked it," she
stated recently, "It fit our lifestyle perfectly, with the tough
looks and big tires." But the more she and her boyfriend drove it,
the more undesirable the special features of the Rubicon model showed
through. "We took it to the Southridge Mall parking lot and tried
pulling the little lever and pressing the buttons for the four wheel
drive system." she said in an interview, "But it went so slow people
were honking at us and when we tried to turn into a parking space it
felt like the whole drivetrain just locked up solid and the tires
made all these scratching and squealing noises." Other complaints
listed in the lawsuit included poor gas mileage, noisy highway ride
and the possibility of environmental damage if used off road.
"In reviewing sales figures we have decided that the low volume of
production does not justify the additional expense that continued
production will cause us." said Baumgartner. "We are seriously
considering the addition of a Rubicon package to the Liberty, but
without all the extra equipment that the Wrangler model had. We have
found that most of our customers prefer leather seats and cruise
control on their Jeeps."

Subject: [TR] Broken Arrow - Saturday, April 5, 2003 - Reminder
Hello All,
Bill Ragan is leading a Broken Arrow trail run on Saturday, April 5, 2003.
When: Leaders meeting at 12:30 pm
We'll hit the trail around 1pm
Where: Meet at the trailhead.
Rating: 2.5+
Length: 3-4 hours
CB Channel: 4
For those who couldn't make it this past Sunday and/or for everyone else, I thought I'd put together another run for this Saturday. This will be rain or shine!
The valley guys can take their time coming up, since it's not so early. Even with a large group and time for pictures, we should be done well before dark.
Please email me if you'd like to be a flight leader. You MUST have a CB to lead.
It should be a lot of fun!
Please pick up your Red Rock passes before arrival at the trail.
Broken Arrow is a fun trail with great scenery. A stock Jeep can make this run and there are areas for those with built rigs to test and flex their suspension, such as the Crack. Pay attention to the signs, as part of this trail is a one-way loop.
A lot of Pink Jeeps share the trail so please put your best foot forward while representing our club. For many of the passengers on those Jeep tours, you are the first real off-roader they have ever seen (gosh, that is a scarey thought!) You will find that most of the pink drivers are pretty cool!
The Devil's Staircase is fun, and some members have been known to run it bottom-to-top. If you do, please post a look-out at the top to prevent someone from coming down while you are trying to go up.
It usually takes a couple of hours to make the loop, which allows ample time for pictures and a stop at Chicken Point for lunch (you did bring lunch, didn't you?)
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Update 4-2-03--
I have quite a few locals contact me and say they're coming, so we should have a fair turnout. I'm not convinced at this point that we'll need more than one flight. If we end up with 15-20 jeeps, I may break it up somewhat at the trail. We also could get a few showers, which might give us a chance to get MUDDY! Also, the Staircase is MUCH more interesting when wet! :-).
As always, everyone's welcome!

I do allot of gear for the club members at the best price I have seen. About 1/2 what 4 wheelers will charge. The only problem I have is I broke my ribs about two weeks ago and will not be able to install them for you for about 2-3 more weeks. If you can what that long I can save you some bucks.

Ever since I got my TJ back from Darners it has been running rough. They
replaced the exhaust manifold and the fan controller/wiring (AC).
I have been suspecting that there is some kind of a vacuum leak since I got
it back. Last night the Jeep almost didn't make it home from Tempe and the
"Service Engine" light has been on since then, although it was running
better this AM.
I don't think a vacuum leak would have made it run extremely bad and then
just bad, I think it would be consistent. Can I get the codes off a '99?
without payng a mechanic? Should I reset the computer?
Any other help would be appreciated.

That or maybe the oxygen sensor needs replaced/reset. If you've been
running for a long time with a cracked manifold the O2 sensor is now
wondering what the heck to think since it's getting all of the
exhaust gases now.
Just a thought,

Phil,
That makes sense to me.... That is why I asked if I should reset the
computer. The manifold was broken for quite a while, I am not
exactly sure how long. Plus, the problems started after the manifold
was replaced.
I might just try it and see if the problems reoccur.

Subject: Considering getting a TJ
Hey all,
I am considering getting a TJ pretty soon, to be a light trail
wheeler/daily driver. It's not that I don't love my CJ, but I would
like to actually go on a trail run every now and then, instead of sit
in the garage and try and put the CJ back together.
Don't know much about TJs though, so I have a couple questions. Is
the D44 rear axle part of a package or a stand alone option? Does
the trailer towing package get you 3.73 gears? Someone told that the
5 speed that is used now is a NV3550, what year did they start
putting those in. Any TJ resource pages? Is the auto that is
offered any good? Does it have an overdirve? Any other pearls of
wisdom?

conventional rubber hoses. After crimping, the hoses are tested to
3000PSI for two minutes. Old ends can be reused or new ends can often be
obtained. ANY combination of fitting can be installed to user
specification. Provided the pricing to end users is within reason, do
you feel this would be a good venture to get involved with? We would
sell locally as well as over the internet.

I've got a tip for y'all...
Rig up one of those onboard shower set-ups. You'll be glad you did.
They let you use stream or lake water to take a nice warm shower.
The Rubicon can get dusty and it's got a much blacker dirt than here
in AZ. Make sure to use biodegradeable soap (which you can get at
places like Popular or REI).

Subject: Re: [Tech] YJ - GEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Choosing a gear ratio depends on what size tires you want to run.
And, in your case, that's constrained by the axles you have as well
as, to a lesser extent, your motor. My opinion is that 4.56 gears
are good for 33" and 35" tires (35" tires may be pushing your 4-cyl
motor a bit). However, 35" tires are a bit much - in my opinion -
for a Dana 35 (unless it has been beefed up with with say a Super 35
kit). Throw a locker into that Dana 35 and you'll be pushing your
luck even with 33" tires.
So, figure out what size tires you want to run, decide if you're
going to install a locker, determine whether that Dana 35 will hold
up, and then make your compromises and final decisions from there.
Most people will recommend NOT investing in that Dana 35 if it's
going to be swapped out in the near future.

My 95 YJ 2.5L, has begun to act up. It is very hard to start. It will crank but it will not fire right off. Sometimes it will take five minutes to get it to fire. I just changed the Distributor cap and rotor to see if that was it. but it is still doing it. I checked the spark plugs (Bosch Platinum) they look fine but they are over a year old. My next step is going to be new Sparkplug wires. Am I heading in the right direction. Could it be a Fuel pump? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have been suspecting that there is some kind of a vacuum leak since I got
it back. Last night the Jeep almost didn't make it home from Tempe and the

better this AM.
I don't think a vacuum leak would have made it run extremely bad and then
just bad, I think it would be consistent. Can I get the codes off a '99?
without payng a mechanic? Should I reset the computer?
Any other help would be appreciated.

That makes sense to me.... That is why I asked if I should reset the

I might just try it and see if the problems reoccur.

LOL
For those that didn't know, the original message Joey cited was
posted 4/1/2002.
I thought about this message when the last mission failed on re-
entry. And although the message was a joke, it could have meant
something more to us all.
Lesson 1: Never take messages on this board seriously on 4/1.
Have a great day. It is now 4/2... lol

Subject: [Tech] -TJ - 3 inch lifts for my 1997 Wrangler
I'm trying to get feedback on some different 3 inch lifts for my 1997 Wrangler. I wanted to know if anyone has the Rusty's Off Road 3 inch lift? If so is it a good kit? Does it last long, are the parts good? Also does anyone have the Terafex 3 inch basic lift that the can give me some feedback on? ANy information would be very helpfull.

Any other pearls of
wisdom?
Thanx

Subject: Brake hoses
I have an opportunity to get in on a business venture involving a DOT
approved brake hose manufacturing machine. It will do braided teflon and
conventional rubber hoses.

Mike,
Bring it on over. I live at 83rd and pinnacle peak. Take about 30 minutes to
get it done.

Subject: Re: 7/21/03 Rubicon Trail Trip...

Subject: Rough starting YJ
I need some help here..
Thanks,
Smitty
