Subject: [TR] Sunflower Mine Loop - Saturday, April 5, 2003 - Reminder
Hello All,
Brad Rogers is leading a Sunflower Mine Loop trail run on Saturday, April 5, 2003.
When: 8:00am Meet at last gas station on Hwy. 87 heading towards Payson; across from Casino (just past Fountain Hills)
Where: SunFlower Mine Loop
Rating: 3.5-
Length: Most of the day
CB Channel: 4
We had such a good trip the first time I just thought it would be fun to take a group up. Great adventure trip where you can try out your rock gaurds as well as your camera skills. If the creek is flowing your in for a wet ride, as well as some mine discovery. I believe we checked out 6 mines that were at least 100 yds long each, so bring a spot light because a flash light just doesn't cut it. Also bring some sandwiches because the trip can take a while if your into the mine thing.
The Sunflower Mine Loop is a fun trail that offers a little something for everyone. It takes 3 – 4 hours to complete allowing for time to poke around and explore. The loop starts as an easy 2.5 trail that winds along a hillside and slowly descends into the canyon. After crossing a bridge you continue up the canyon until you arrive at the Sunflower Mine site. The mine’s processing building is still standing and is in decent shape. Stock vehicles can make this section of the loop easily, however the next section requires higher ground clearance and aggressive tires.
After leaving the mine the trails continues up a shady canyon becoming more tight and challenging as it runs across and up a rocky creek bed. The bed is usually dry but can be very slippery when water is running. After awhile you make a hard right turn up a steep rock wall obstacle and continue to climb a loose rocky road out of the canyon and into the pines and junipers. At the top the trail continues with some washed out sections, passes a couple of more mine shafts, and gradually becomes easier as you return to the loops starting point.
Remember to pack water, a lunch, and bring your camera.
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Will,
I have this lift on my 99. It has given me no problems in 3 years, the only
downside is that you don't have adjustable control arms, so tuning the
pinion angles is not an option.
If I had to do it again, I would opt for a lift with adjustable control arms
top and bottom.

P.S. these are 5-4.5, I think. Anyway, I just took them off my

a used 35x12.5 tire, and that will be my spare. I'd like to
give the rest out, one to each member who needs one (first
come, first serve), so they can have a spare wheel too.

along with being part way out of the control arm. These bushings
have at least 115,000 miles on them so I think it may be time to
replace them. What causes the clunking sound? Are they moving and
dropping on each spin of the axle? If so, I can make a pretty fair
judgement that this is the problem. Any thing else that might be
making this happen? What would have caused it all of a sudden?
Would it have been the "light" wheeling I did at the coves 2 days in
a row? Would it be best to swap out all the control arm bushings at
the same time? How long can one drive with the bushings like this
and still have a safe ride? Sorry, for all the questions but I still
am a novice at the whole "mechanic" stuff. Thanks for all your input.

of my TJ). While it is more of a challenge to determine
the "quality" of the bushing while it is still bolted in place, you
can many times see parts of the bushing peeling apart and coming out
of the control arm bracket. The rubber material at the 9 o'clock
position in the above picture could be seen working its way out of
the bracket. Simply grabbing it and tugging on it is not a
guaranteed method to check it….people just don't have the strength in
most cases to make it happen (at least not like an axle moving around
under the vehicle). Unbolting the arm and checking it out is the
best way to verify a bad bushing.

Jose,
It went flawlessly! I expected a lot more traffic jams than we had
and all of the delays were because of the Pink Jeeps who were always
given the right of way. My only complaint is that the trail is too
short and we were done by 1pm. Several of us had time to run another
trail though so that was good. Overall, a great day! I'm sure the
Forest Service and the Pink Jeep drivers came away impressed with our
club. Let alone all the tourists caulking at all the Jeeps (one guy
asked me if there was a Jeep convention in town. LOL)! Pretty cool!
Wish you could have been there. Thanks for kicking this off. Scott
and all of the team leaders did a great job. Thanks all.

I have a feeling that Im gonna want to go with Poly style mounts just because Im not planning on taking this axle out again any time soon J I might check with 4 wheelers and see if they can do it there. Has anybody ever had these things replaced?? I dont even know how much something like this would be parts and labor.

Hi Joe,
It went off very smoothly. The trail leaders and gunners of all the groups
did a great job of communicating with each other and traffic jams were
minimal. We always knew where the other groups were. The first group headed
out around 10:00 and my group, the second, was off the trail just before 1
o'clock. The last group came out around 2:15 or so. Average trip time was
about 3 hours. I think we had between 50 and 60 Jeeps.
The best pic I have seen so far is this one that I am going to repost.
(Credit goes to Brandon Reid for the photo). The building behind the camera
would have been the ranger station where everyone purchased their Red Rock
Passes and the building in the background would be where the Coffee shop was
located. (They make great smoothies there too :) Some more Jeeps were parked
off to the right of the photo.
It was a lot of fun.

Thanks again for running with this... I am extremely happy that it turned
out well.
Leaders,
Thanks for volunteering! I hope it was worth the trouble.
Did anyone get a Jeep count?

Hi Joe,
It went off very smoothly.

Hello All,
Brad Rogers is leading a Sunflower Mine Loop trail run on Saturday, April 5, 2003.

If I had to do it again, I would opt for a lift with adjustable control arms
top and bottom.

have at least 115,000 miles on them so I think it may be time to
replace them. What causes the clunking sound? Are they moving and

making this happen? What would have caused it all of a sudden?
Would it have been the "light" wheeling I did at the coves 2 days in
a row? Would it be best to swap out all the control arm bushings at
the same time? How long can one drive with the bushings like this
and still have a safe ride? Sorry, for all the questions but I still
am a novice at the whole "mechanic" stuff. Thanks for all your input.

the "quality" of the bushing while it is still bolted in place, you
can many times see parts of the bushing peeling apart and coming out
of the control arm bracket.

Chris,
There is an alternative to bushings for the front upper axle. Currie has a johnny joint designed to replace those bushings. Should last a long time and would probably be easier for us to install.

Scott K was telling me that the stealership has a 6ft long hand press type tool to put the bushings in and out on.

Darnella,
I heard stories about you over dinner tonight. Seems you were the center of
attention in group 7. I caught a glimpse of your excitement when we met up
with you as your group passed the fork in the road. I think you win the most
excited Jeeper of the day award <Grin>

Importance: High
Hi Everyone,
My ZJ (as I learned today is what I drive is no longer a virgin), thanks to
Nessar and Scott Legg and the entire Flight 7 (white) team. My ZJ, stocked
and all took the staircase like a champ. Yeaaaa Snow !!! (the name of the
jeep).
It was totally awesome; however, as Nessar meantion, I need Jeep 101.... I
wonder why???? hmmmm....but anywho; I had a total blast and looking forward
to doing it again. Ahhh, after my 2" lift (of course).,,,but what the hey,
who needs to wait????
But the most fun of all, I met some really cool and neat people...some even
as crazy or crazier than I am.....right on!!!
I daughter had a great time as well...she is on the quite side...but that's
ok...I make up for it.
My new jeep family...

Yeah, at the gas station a lady from out of town asked me if it was a
requirement to own a Jeep if you live or play in Sedona. I said "No, but it
sure makes it a whole lot more fun".

Jose,
It went flawlessly!
Thanks all.

Subject: Purse lost on Sedona trip
Hello,
I have been informed that a purse was lost on the Sedona trip on Sunday. The owner believes it may have been misplaced while stopped at Chicken Point. If anybody happened to pick one up, or knows of somebody that did, please contact me so that it can be returned to its anxious owner.
Thanks!
