Stu (or anybody else),
I just went out and took a glance at the front bushings. The lowers look "pretty" worn. Most of the bushing that I can see at the same 9 o'clock position as your picture is cracked and pretty thin along with being part way out of the control arm. These bushings have at least 115,000 miles on them so I think it may be time to replace them. What causes the clunking sound? Are they moving and dropping on each spin of the axle? If so, I can make a pretty fair judgement that this is the problem. Any thing else that might be making this happen? What would have caused it all of a sudden? Would it have been the "light" wheeling I did at the coves 2 days in a row? Would it be best to swap out all the control arm bushings at the same time? How long can one drive with the bushings like this and still have a safe ride? Sorry, for all the questions but I still am a novice at the whole "mechanic" stuff. Thanks for all your input.

and this is what a wasted bushing will look like (this one came out of my TJ). While it is more of a challenge to determine the “quality” of the bushing while it is still bolted in place, you can many times see parts of the bushing peeling apart and coming out of the control arm bracket. The rubber material at the 9 o’clock position in the above picture could be seen working its way out of the bracket. Simply grabbing it and tugging on it is not a guaranteed method to check it….people just don’t have the strength in most cases to make it happen (at least not like an axle moving around under the vehicle). Unbolting the arm and checking it out is the best way to verify a bad bushing.

A few days ago I noticed while idling I was hearing/feeling a weird clunk I think in the front. The sound/feeling is consistant with the wheels turning. This does not happen when I apply the brakes or gas and I only feel/hear it when going less than 10 mph. The day before this started happening I replaced my front brake pads, but I did nothing out of the ordinary. Any ideas what this might be or what to look for to find the culprit? TIA

Clipped from my web site.....
Note: I have not verified this personally, but I saw a posting on a
forum that states that Moog PN# K3131 will get you a pair of stock
replacement lower bushings. Also, the NAPA part number for the upper is
NCP267-1372 and the lower is NCP267-3409.
If you took a measurement or two with you, I am sure you could confirm
the correct bushing size prior to walking out of the NAPA store. I
would also believe the price at NAPA would be less.

I'm glad you told me that, I wouldn't have liked the *Squeaking* very
much at all!!! I'll grab them at the dealer and just try the ball joint

just didn't want to damage the mount if there was a better way. I didn't
want to take it down anywhere to a shop just for that.

If I recall, the parts were like $65 for the poly bushings, but I would
recommend against them. They *SQUEAK* really loudly on even the
smallest speed bump. When I installed them, I installed the outer shim
thingy they supplied to supposedly help with lateral cornering forces.
I'm gonna try to pull those out and see if that helps before I pull them
all out and go back to rubber.

Wade if you are hearing something with every revolution on the wheel I don't think it is from the bushings. You have verified they need replacing but I would look elsewhere just in case. Check your tread for rocks, nails, bolts ect. Jack up each wheel. Check your lugs and make sure they are tight. Grab the tire at 12;00 and 6:00 and seee if it rocks. Your ball joints could be worn. Spin the wheels, are they out of round? Pull the wheels. See if there are any signs of rubbing. Did you check your rotors for warpage? Does your brake pedal pulse? Grab the caliper and try and move it. Make sure it is tight. Check your Dust sheilds for clearance on the back side.

Joe,
I bought my 1998 TJ about 3 months ago. It has a lot of upgrades that were
"professionally installed" by a local 4 wheel shop. The upgrades included a
Teraflex 3" long arm lift, a 1" body lift, a transfer case lowering kit,
headers and ARBs front and rear. In the process of going through the Jeep
in detail over the past months I have found a number of things that were
done incorrectly by this "professional installer". Among these were an
incorrect pressure switch for the ARBs (145 psi instead of 105 psi), an
exhaust leak, an intake manifold leak, sloppy wiring and finally misaligned
pinion angles.. Both the front and rear pinions were obviously off. To
correct the rear, I had to lengthen the control arms by about 3/4" on one
side and an 1.5" on the other side. Yes, the control arms were installed
at different lengths. The wheelbase on one side was actually about 3/4"
shorter than the other. I also lengthened each of the front control arms by
about an inch. Prior to this adjustment, caster (using Doug's suggested
angle finder) was about 2 degrees). Following the control arm adjustment,
the angle showed 7 degrees. As a double check I measure my 98 Grand
Cherokee with up country suspension. It also measured 7 degrees using this
same method. I did not have vibrations prior to the control arm adjustment
and I do not have any vibrations now. Steering wheel return to center,
however, has improved noticeably.

Subject: RE: Again, I need some insite...
Wade,
While I cant speak to your Jeep, I can comment about mine. Ive gone through a pair of lower control arm bushings (by a pair, I mean a left and right side) in as little as 6 months. DC played around a bit with some variation on the design which, I believe, was a disaster, They molded a channel in the rubber which causes premature failure, at least in my application.
As for your bushing failing, Ive seen them go pretty fast (from no sound to clunking). Flex is what works the bushing and ultimately causes it to fail&.hence, I can go through a set pretty fast at times. Long arms dont seem to wear as fast since the longer arm causes less rotation of the bushing material. With the 100K+ miles on yours, it is possible that a few good days of wheelin was all it took for one or two of them to let go.
As to how long you can drive&.well, if it is really clunking, I wouldnt do it too long. Ive gone a couple of weeks and havent destroyed anything&..but I sure wouldnt go wheelin if I had a bushing that was on its way out.
The clunking sound is the slop between the control arm and the bolt going through the bracket. As the axle moves under torque and flex, the control arm moves back and forth and causes the clunking noise. I dont think they move and drop on each rotation of the axle though.
I hope this has been helpful.

Thanks Joe. How do I go about checking them? Do I have to remove them to do that or would a "shot" bushing be visible without removal? Think this is a coincidence or could it be related to me putting in new brake pads?

A few days ago I noticed while idling I was hearing/feeling a weird clunk I think in the front. The sound/feeling is consistant with the wheels turning. This does not happen when I apply the brakes or gas and I only feel/hear it when going less than 10 mph. The day before this started happening I replaced my front brake pads, but I did nothing out of the ordinary. Any ideas what this might be or what to look for to find the culprit? TIA

Wade,
While I can’t speak to your Jeep, I can comment about mine. I’ve gone through a pair of lower control arm bushings (by a pair, I mean a left and right side) in as little as 6 months. DC played around a bit with some variation on the design which, I believe, was a disaster, They molded a channel in the rubber which causes premature failure, at least in my application.
As for your bushing failing, I’ve seen them go pretty fast (from no sound to clunking). Flex is what works the bushing and ultimately causes it to fail….hence, I can go through a set pretty fast at times. Long arms don’t seem to wear as fast since the longer arm causes less rotation of the bushing material. With the 100K+ miles on yours, it is possible that a few good days of wheelin’ was all it took for one or two of them to let go.
As to how long you can drive….well, if it is really clunking, I wouldn’t do it too long. I’ve gone a couple of weeks and haven’t destroyed anything…..but I sure wouldn’t go wheelin’ if I had a bushing that was on its way out.
The clunking sound is the slop between the control arm and the bolt going through the bracket. As the axle moves under torque and flex, the control arm moves back and forth and causes the clunking noise. I don’t think they move and drop on each rotation of the axle though.
I hope this has been helpful.

I'm glad you told me that, I wouldn't have liked the *Squeaking* very

just didn't want to damage the mount if there was a better way. I didn't
want to take it down anywhere to a shop just for that.

TIA

Wade,
While I can’t speak to your Jeep, I can comment about mine.
