Subject: Support a US Marine who loves Jeeps in Iraq
If anyone is looking to correspond with or send care packages to a Marine in combat, my son was deployed to Kuwait/Iraq 10 days ago.........he is really into Jeeps and wheeling and does a fine job with his 85 CJ7 (which I gave him as a 16th birthday present) with 4" of lift and 33's. While he is gone, he gave me a list of things to do to his Jeep like an SOA, new gearing, locker in the rear, 35's, tranny rebuild and a new body tub to replace the rusted out one that he is tired of patching every month. I know he would love to hear from fellow Jeepers, get pictures of Jeeps and wheeling, 4x4 magazines, etc.
You can send him stuff at this address:

Mike,
I wish him well. Too bad he doesn't have a TJ as I have a few things
in the garage I could donate to the "cause". But since he doesn't, I
will pitch in and help you buy something on his list. Give me your

The cost of the bushings is not that much. While I, like Doug, have recycled my stock ones, I know some have bought replacement lower bushings and the cost was in the $20 some things range. Getting them in and out is more of the challenge.

I've replaced these many times in my XJ, which are the same as the TJ.
For the passenger side, I've always been able to just pound it out with a BFH. It always comes out fairly easily.
The drivers side tends to be a *****. For this one I use my handy-dandy ball joint press from Harbor Freight. I usually have to get a bit creative with stacking washers, etc.. but it will push out. I believe Autozone and Checker rent/loan this tool out.

If I recall, the parts were like $65 for the poly bushings, but I would
recommend against them. They *SQUEAK* really loudly on even the
smallest speed bump. When I installed them, I installed the outer shim
thingy they supplied to supposedly help with lateral cornering forces.
I'm gonna try to pull those out and see if that helps before I pull them
all out and go back to rubber.

Wade,
In case the above pic does not display, it is at http://www.stu-offroad.com/bushing/bushing-7.jpg
and this is what a wasted bushing will look like (this one came out of my TJ). While it is more of a challenge to determine the quality of the bushing while it is still bolted in place, you can many times see parts of the bushing peeling apart and coming out of the control arm bracket. The rubber material at the 9 oclock position in the above picture could be seen working its way out of the bracket. Simply grabbing it and tugging on it is not a guaranteed method to check it&.people just dont have the strength in most cases to make it happen (at least not like an axle moving around under the vehicle). Unbolting the arm and checking it out is the best way to verify a bad bushing.

Doug, that is an INCORRECT way to do that....It would work assuming
that when the axle was assembled, the output yoke was perfectly
straight and the axle knuckles were EXACTLY 90 degrees perpindicular
to the yoke....HOWEVER, there is 4.77 degrees of POSITIVE
caster "built into" the axle.. so as per the FSM " driveline
angualarity will take precedence over caster measurement....My
question that I would ask is " why do you think that your caster
needs to be adjusted?" I would reccomend that if he were to try this
himself, would be to LENGTHEN the lower arms untill a SMALL amount of
vibes occurs, then shorten them 1 turn. There is no accurate way to
measure caster swing or ackerman angle without doing a 4o degree
swing on the vehicle......
Hope this helps....

Just remember that adjusting caster also adjusts the front pinion
angle, and I know of no alignment shops that know much about that.
The front pinion should be near 0* compared to the driveshaft (ie, no
angle on the joint).

Fortunately, caster can be a bit forgiving. Just try to stay in the 4-

If you're replacing all of them, the best way I found to take the
bushings out of the arms is to yank the arms out and burn out the old
ones with a propane torch. Once you get the old ones out, take one of
those cone-shaped wire brush wheels in your drill and clean out the
inside. The wheel just fits inside. Needless to say, do this outside.
Obviously you shouldn't do this still on the Jeep. If your top axle
bushings are worn enough they should just pop out. Mine consisted of
the metal bushing and a pencil sized piece of rubber. No wonder they
were clunking!

I wish him well. Too bad he doesn't have a TJ as I have a few things
