Subject: [TR] Martinez Canyon - Sunday, March 30, 2003

Hello All,

Todd Ahern is leading a Martinez Canyon trail run on Sunday, March 30, 2003.

When: Sunday 0830 Sharp!!!!
Where: Texaco at Florence Junction.
Rating: 4.0+
Length:
CB Channel: 4

Rolling out at 0830. going to try to get Jack Handle in on the way out.

Martinez Canyon has to be one of the most beautiful canyons south of the Sedona AZ red bluffs. To reach the trailhead you travel over rolling hills of desert cactus, shrubs and trees. All of a sudden you enter a narrow passageway into a canyon of deep red bluffs and cottonwood trees.

Most of the year there is a spring that winds through the trees and low area. You will find the old homestead at the grouping of cottonwood trees along with some old mining generators and storerooms. Just past the homestead you will drop into the wash and follow it to the old mill.

The road winds back and forth across the wash as well as follows the wash for a time but the trail stays in the wash. You can spend hours "playing" on the rocks and waterfalls.

A mile or so into the wash you will approach a large landslide blocking the wash so the trail starts up the switchback trail "to the top of the world". The view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking.

As you start back down the switchback trail you will find it has been washed out, big time! The washout cuts through several of the "switchbacks" in a cut approximately 8 feet deep and 8 foot wide, so down you go. After a drop into the washout you will crank a hard left turn and literally freeslide on the loose gravel/dirt about 200 yards.

The first comment made from one of the original founders is the best description to the end of a great day of wheeling. "This is better than an 'E' Ticket ride at Disneyland! It's wheel'n the luge!"

This trail is definitely for the "extreme" vehicle as well as an experienced driver. Lockers are required and 33" tires and maximum clearance are a must.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

NOTE: 2/17/02 - I (Stu Olson) ran the trail yesterday and I believe it is safe to say that there is not much of a chance to "run the luge" anymore. I could be mistaken, but few (any?) would survive the drop into the luge. It is extrememly erroded now and the old bypass is now the main path down, IMO.

A Thank you to everyone who dropped me a line on this. Its 9:15 Sat night and I just got the jeep back on the ground about 30 min ago. I used 5/16x3 Grade 8 bolts from Pep-Boys to replace the center pins in the leaf spring pack in the rear. And up front I noticed that my sway bar end links were not lengthened when the 3 Rough Country lift was put on. I cant afford to replace those until payday this Friday so to get it back on the road I just removed the sway bar. Hope I dont get car sick to easily. Now Ill be back on the trails really soon.

In the last couple of days my 88 XJ has birthed a crap load of new problems; My Steering wheel is turned about ¼ of a turn to the right when driving straight but when I let go of it the truck doesnt pull at all. I can hear a lot of rattling up front when going over bumps and stuff but cant figure out what is loose. I also get the fu$#(*g Death Wobble!!! My rear axle is messed up too. My passenger rear tire is closer to the back of the Jeep than my driver side rear tire. It is almost touching the fender flare. I get the death wobble at about 45-55 mph and thats it. Its the worst when getting off the freeway. (slowing down through that speed) I get a very minor vibration at all other times as well though. This rig has 211,8** miles on it and might just be about finished. I have no idea where to start looking. Im only 19 years old and dont know that much about this. I had the rig on jacks for awhile but was just clueless. If anybody could tell me where to start, or if there was anyone in the east valley that has the day off today or tomorrow and could come take a look at it, It would be greatly appreciated. You can give me a call at Home @ 480-854-7788. I live near Sossoman and the US60. Thanx

Chris, try being a little more specific here. Are you maybe referring to
the ball joints? I am not really knowledgeble on XJ's but I think the only
bushings you would have would be from the control arms as part of the
suspension.

Subject: Re: alignment shop?

It's an easy Do-It-Yourself task. All it requires is a simple angle finder ($10 from Home Depot). Just place the angle finder in the flat underside of the axle yoke. Stock caster is 7* positive - but with a lift you'll get less than that. Keep it above 4* and you'll be fine. Just remember that adjusting caster also adjusts the front pinion angle, and I know of no alignment shops that know much about that. The front pinion should be near 0* compared to the driveshaft (ie, no angle on the joint).

With a lift, caster and pinion angle get compromised a little. Fortunately, caster can be a bit forgiving. Just try to stay in the 4-7 degree range.

I believe he's referring to the upper control arm bushings. They're a PITA
to get out, but much easier to do with the axle out of the vehicle. They're
pressed in and are a tight fit. I've heard of some that use a press to
remove them, and some that cut them out.

Probably right Doug. I know I helped Ben Hill do his lowers last week and
they were a *****. The press was definetly needed. I didn't pay attention
to the uppers. but aren't the bushings pressed into a sleeve on the actual
control arm and not on the axle?

Here is a pic of the upper control arm mount. As you can see, the front
uppers are bass-ackwards from all the other arms. The bushing is fitted
into the control arm bracket and the upper arm is bolted over it.

The upper axle side bushings are on the axle itself. They're the same
bushing type and size that the stock arms have...and there are plenty of
them around, so there's no need to buy a set. I ended up cutting a set out
of my stock arms just to keep as spares.

I so wish I could have been there. I even went into work at 6 am so I would
be done but I didn't get off until around 5 pm. I was so tired I went to
be. I still fly old glory anyway.

I had a fun time at the "support our troops" run yesterday,
(the one that started at Fiesta Mall at Noon.) I did miss BONNIE.
BONNIE WHERE WERE YOU!?

I used up all of the environmentally-safe freon substitute in
my air horn. Gosh, those things are loud.

Jeff told me that some of my email replies to the list(s) are
blank, so I've switched from my ancient Eudora to Netscape
Communicator Messenger. No way am I gonna start using
IE Outlook Express. That pop client is an open invitation
to a computer virus. If my email responses are still turning
up blank, please someone email me and let me know, and
I will start using PINE or ELM. =P

Tony

P.S. The plastic Coke Bottle that someone deposited on
my front bumper disappeared, don't know exactly when. ;-)

Where is the fill plug for the Tj's 5 speed transmission located?
Also what lubricant is the best to use?

I didn't make the organized run(s), but I did cruize the Patriot's
Square downtown phoenix several times with my USA flag flying and
plate and sticker supporting the USMC. It wasn't too crowded there at
11:00 AM but I imagine the crowd grew later on.
Glad to hear others support our troops and are showing it.

Not sure what year TJ you have, so you can have one of two different
manual trannys.

If you have the AX-15, then this will be of help:

http://www.stu-offroad.com/misc/fluids-1.htm

It covers the t-case and AX-15 tranny.

If someone has similar pics for he 3550 (or what ever model that is),
shoot them my way and I'll include them on the above web page to make it
more complete.
