Rick is THE person to see when you need tires and/or wheels for your Jeep . New and sometimes used stuff . I just left there tonight as a matter of fact rolling on my new 31 inch BFG Muds on aluminum wheels . He also hooked me up with some good used stuff for some other projects I'm working on . He's at the 4 th Ave and Bell road store but it's worth the drive if you don't live close . I saw Mike Acuna there as I pulled in getting some tires and wheels put on to a trailer he just built and I know he doesn't live anywhere close to that Discount Tire store . The phone # for that store is 602 942-9603 .

Once again a huge thanks to Rick for hooking me up with a bit of bling and some rubber for the tow rig. Saved me bunch of bucks to boot!
It seems like I ran into about five AZVJCers while I was there. His store must be the unofficial meeting place, eh?

Subject: State OHV Fund
Dear Sir,
Below is the note I sent to my legislatures in hopes that they would reconsider their decision to use the monies from the OHV Fund for other purposes. I am hoping that my letter and those from others will help them see that this is not an acceptable practice.
I am writing to request that you consider finding a way by which to maintain Tammy Pike in the employment of the STL Department. Over the past several years, I have come to know Tammy fairly well from the numerous land use meetings I have attended. In addition to those, I also find her at the Saturday land cleanups that are sponsored by the various OHV clubs and supported by your office. I had the pleasure to spend a week with her at last years National OHV conference in Scottsdale and her experience in her job brought much to the table during our group discussions.
Her interactions with the OHV community have gone a long way to help build a trust between the local land management agencies and the OHV users in our state. She is always there to help the new folks understand their responsibilities concerning OHV travel on STL when the land use permits are being handed out. It is, no doubt, a thankless job but it seems that Tammy never tires of it.
I can not speak for all the Arizonas off-road folks, but I can say that myself and all of my friends would dearly miss her efforts if she were to leave your department. With the new trail inventories and resource management plans that are on going across the state, I do hope you will be able to retain her services. To lose her now would be a big step backwards in Arizonas OHV programs. As they say in Australia, She is a keeper!
Sincerely,
Stu Olson

As a resident of the state of Arizona, I am all too aware of the budget crisis that our state is experiencing. It is my understanding that the monies in the State OHV Fund have recently been redirected to other areas and thus leaves the entire OHV community without funding for enforcement, education, and grant opportunities, to name just a few.
Reports from last year's National Off Highway Vehicle Conference indicated an OHV growth rate of some 30% per year. It is, without a doubt, one of the fast growing sports in the southwest. With the State Trails Inventory project well underway, it is essential that the OHV fund monies be returned so that the inventory may be completed. This is the first step in providing the necessary base line trail information for the new resource management plans that are being developed to manage our lands in Arizona. We are currently operating on plans that are well over 10 years old. The OHV growth rate has made these plans obsolete.
We in the OHV community have struggled in past years in an attempt to provide educational material to new OHV users. An educated OHV user helps prevent the misuses of our outdoor resources. Cutting the funding for this will set this effort back years and could result in a backslide that may never be recovered. The money to support OHV grants for such things as interpretive signs and OHV parks will cease to exist.
Without the OHV Fund monies, the State Land Department will lose its OHV Director. It has taken a long time to establish the current working relationships that exist between the State Land Department and the OHV community. This loss of staff, like in the education area, will effectively negate all the work that has been done with the OHV community to date.
As residents of this state, neither you nor I can afford to let this happen. The OHV community will recreate on public lands and they will have fun. Without the monies from the OHV Fund, the chances of the public doing so in a controlled and responsible manner are decreased. None of us can afford to let this happen.
Please reconsider your actions and allow the money from the OHV Fund to be used in the manner for which it was conceived.
Thank you,

I just got off the phone with the USO in California and they told me
as of yesterday ----------NO-------- packages at all will be sent
overseas unless they have an actual address to go to a family member.
All USO efforts have been switched to help support family members.
Right now what is needed for the families are gift certificates that
have an expiration date of around a year or more, gift baskets with
non perishable food and other items, toys or games for the kids. You
can still put the donation items from earlier list in the gift
baskets and then the families can send them on. But to reiterate,-----
-NO------ items will be sent by the USO. So we need to come up with
another plan, any ideas please let me know. Jeff 480-213-1976

Kat was in touch with USO the other day and they told her we could do the donations anyway. I dont know who she talked to but this was just yesterday that they stopped ALL donations. Now all donations are going to the families to either send themselves or use themselves. The lady I talked to said that most of the stuff that was given to them is being thrown away if they dont have room for it on the planes if they cant give it to the families. So, as I and everyone else appreciate all the support maybe we can come up with something to help the families. Like USO told me, the soldiers was the only source of income and when they left it left a lot of families to fend for themselves. Let me hear some ideas. Thanks Jeff

Assuming you were able to turn the wheel 1/4 to 1/2 turn at the absolute max, I would look towards your drag link ends. Sounds like they might be worn. Do you have any wandering or darting off as your go down the road? IF it drives well and is on something older it could be the steering shaft is worn. What is this on?

Hello Gang,
Well, I will try to explain what is happening. I noticed a couple of days ago that my steering wheel was not centered like it has always been, so my first thought was that I was out of alignment because I had done that before. But when I got home, I left the keys in the "turn off" position, and proceeded to turn the steering wheel and the tires didn't move but the steering wheel would turn. I didn't have to turn the steering wheel with much force, it turned fairly easy. I checked my steering knuckle and steering box. Everything seems OK, without anything out of the ordinary.
Has this ever happened to anyone? Any help would be greatly appreciated.....................
Thanks,
Casper

You will want a hydraulic press. It makes things so much easier. You can
get one at Harbor Freight for about $120 or you can borrow mine. It has
done my personal one and I believe four other club members D300s, so it has
experience. <grin>
You will also need a dial indicator and a magnetic base to check end play on
you output shaft. Again Harbor Freight for $30 or borrow mine.
A good manual is a must have. I found the Tera instructions lacking.
I purchased a rebuild kit in addition to the Teralow for about $100. It
wiill duplicate some of the parts but it is worth it to have everything new.
You might want to twin stick the transfer case at the same time. There are
some heavier springs (or spacers that preload the existing springs) that
will need to be installed to keep it from jumping out of gear. You can also
remove a pin that will give you a couple of transfer case shifting options
if desired.
Teraflex is human, so watch for errors. They didn't finish boring my
intermediate gear so the shaft and bearings did not fit. They took care of
it though.
Good Luck

I have done a couple of them in the D300. You will have to notch the
transfer case to get the main gear in. You will also need a dial indicator

your time and be patient.

Subject: State OHV funds
Mr. Winkleman:
It is absolutely imperative that the Arizona State Land Department
continues funding its OHV program, and Tammy Pike in particular. In ARS
37-102 C the ASLD is charged with "protect[ing] the interest of the state
in lands within the state." This program certainly accomplishes this goal.
The program far transcends this though, in providing recreational
opportunities for all Arizonians.
This program has been nothing but a huge success story, thanks in no small
part to Tammy Pike's unceasing efforts for clean-ups and education on
proper use. I shudder to think what would be going on right now without her
tireless work.
I can only pray that you realize that it within your power, indeed even
your duty under ARS 37-132 A3, to ensure continued funding for this
worthwhile program that serves not only the interest of Arizona's State
land, but indeed the interest of us all.

THANKS for the letter.......... however, please note the ASLD have NEVER
funded Tammy's position within ASLD. The OHV Gas Tax Fund, which is
administered through State Parks, funded Tammy and the OHV program. It is
our hopes to pressure ASLD enough to make them realize THEY must find a way
to fund this program from within and by re-directing the fees from all the
Rec Permits we all are purchasing, this could easily be done......
Keep up the good work and KEEP THE LETTERS GOING................ I'm truly
hoping Mr. Winkleman walks into the meeting Monday morning with thousands of
letters..........
THANKS for your support and encouragement for Tammy............ she's
pretty low right now and knowing how many support her is very rewarding!!!

Dave,
Don't worry about making a mistake in your letter....I know I do it more
times than not. It happens because so many of us don't have all the
small details and so while trying the best we can and for all the right
reasons, we don't always hit the nail square on the head. But....the
fact that the folks at the ASLD are getting mail from you and me and
other OHV folks sends them a clear message that WE want THEM to help
figure out a way to keep Tammy helping the folks here in our state. She
does a job for the OHV community and I for one can't begin to thank her
enough. I would hate to lose her!

FAQ: AZVJC Broken Arrow Trip 3/30/03
Hello! In order to answer all of the questions I have put together this FAQ. It may be edited as we get closer to departure. Please print out a copy Saturday night or Sunday morning before you leave. Any new items added after the original posting of this FAQ will be shown in red print.
Scott Legge will be leading a caravan from the Waffle House on the NE corner of I-17 and Bell Rd. Departure will be no later than 7:30 AM. If you like, some members will be having breakfast starting at 6 AM (though that is optional). Otherwise read below for details on how to meet us in Sedona.
We need to get together for a leaders meeting in Sedona at 9:30 AM. Then the smaller groups will begin to depart. Please be prompt. Due to the large group size it will be very tough for us to wait for anybody that is late. If you are late we will try to accomodate you in group 7.
The location where we are going to meet has a Coffee/juice/donut shop in one building closest to Hwy 179 with a nice big parking lot between it and the next building which is the Chamber of Commerce and Forest Station (where the Red Rock passes can be purchased). Each vehicle will need a Red Rock pass at a cost of $5 per vehicle. Please show up early enough to acquire your pass and find your trip leader. Please park between the two buildings in the big lot. We have notified both the Juice shop and the Ranger Station that a large group is showing up.
Creative Juices (Coffee house with Krispy Kreme donuts)
SouthGate Plaza
7000 Hwy 179
Open at 6:30am
SouthGate Plaza Chamber of Commerce & Forest Station
Open @ 8:30 am
1 pass per vehicle ($5)
They are located after the first traffic light on Hwy 179 on the left side of the road. We can turn left at the light and then right into the plaza or use the middle turn lane to turn into the plaza. Here is a map from Mapquest for a rough idea of where it is. I think the directions are better as the maps are not as updated as their development up there.
Mapquest
You will be able to spot your trip leader by looking for a Jeep flying an appropriate colored group ribbon on the anntenna. Please get with your trip leader and attach a ribbon onto your Jeep to help us stay organized. I have asked that each trip leader acquire a spool of ribbon. I will update the spreadsheet very soon with final group assignments. If at all possible print out an updated copy Saturday night or Sunday morning.
http://members.cox.net/skruize/sedona.htm
If you get there and cannot find your leader look for me. I will be near a big tan Wrangler with a purple "Daddy Longlegs" banner on the windshield. You can't miss it. My wife and I will wear our "Daddy Longlegs" purple and black baseball hats to help you identify us. (Click on the link earlier in the paragraph for a picture of it.)
Please allow yourself all day for this adventure. Remember that this is a special group gathering and don't fret over the stop and go traffic. When all the groups have arrived at Chicken Point we will take a picture and head back out. There will be time to eat your lunch at Chicken Point. Please realize that for this to move at a fluid pace we need each vehicle to be ready to stop and roll in a fairly quick pace. There will be stops for pictures at the discretion of each group leader. If the next group bumps into you then that group will need to move along ASAP! If everybody can keep it together we won't have any trouble.
There may be breakdowns on the trail. In that case I ask that the group continue on and that a second vehicle stay with the first to help them get fixed. When they are rolling again I would hope that they can join the next group that comes by. If the breakdown is major I will make sure you get off the trail. Among other tools I've got a big hammer, a welder, and recovery gear. So one way or another we'll get you home.
We will be using channel 4 on the CB. Group leaders will coordinate via FRS and CB.
Bring along your camera as this will be an event to remember!
Thanks!

I'm not as familiar with this fund as some others, so I'm educating myself on it. Remember that the budget is a long way from being approved, there is much negotiating and compromising to be done first. I brought your comments to the attention of other members so we can begin to add it to our budget dialogue. However, there are no promises on any issues this year. Many programs are being cut or eliminated in this 7th or 8th budget cutting session. All I can do is look into it, talk to other members about it and see where we can go from there. I appreciate your bringing it to my attention. It isn't an issue that comes before any of my committees. Thanks. --Toni Hellon

Subject: OHV Fund
I am writing in reference to the raided OHV fund, I am well aware of the budget
crisis that our state is experiencing. It is my understanding that the
money in the State OHV Fund have recently been redirected to other
areas and thus leaves the entire OHV community without funding for
enforcement, education, and grant opportunities, to name just a few.
Reports from last year's National Off Highway Vehicle Conference
indicated an OHV growth rate of some 30% per year. It is, without a
doubt, one of the fast growing sports in the southwest. With the State
Trails Inventory project well underway, it is essential that the OHV
fund monies be returned so that the inventory may be completed. This is
the first step in providing the necessary base line trail information
for the new resource management plans that are being developed to manage
our lands in Arizona. We are currently operating on plans that are well
over 10 years old. The OHV growth rate has made these plans obsolete.
We in the OHV community have struggled in past years and continue
to struggle in an attempt to provide educational material to new OHV users.
An educated OHV user helps prevent the misuse of our outdoor resources.
Cutting the funding for this will set this effort back years and could result in a backslide
that may never be recovered. The money to support OHV grants for such
things as interpretive signs and OHV parks will cease to exist.
Without the OHV Fund monies, the State Land Department will lose its OHV
Director. It has taken a long time to establish the current working
relationships that exist between the State Land Department and the OHV
community. This loss of staff, like in the education area, will
effectively negate all the work that has been done with the OHV
community to date.
These funds are put into place because there is a need for them, if they
can be taken away that easily without causing consequences they would
not have been created in first place.
As a resident of this state, neither you nor I can afford to let this
happen. The OHV community will recreate on public lands and they will
have fun. Without the money from the OHV Fund, the chances of the
public doing so in a controlled and responsible manner are decreased.
None of us can afford to let this happen.
Please reconsider your actions and allow the money from the OHV Fund to
be used in the manner for which it was conceived.
If taking this money causes monetary losses down the road, then it will defeat
the purpose of taking the money in the first place. Maybe the State needs to
budget money to educate themselves on working within the budget they currently
have and not put our state in this position in the first place.
Thank You

Mr.

Thanks!

I thought some of you might want to show up for the troop support run
tomorrow, but I guess I was wrong. My friend Daemon was going to
video tape it and send copies to some friends of his fighting in
Iraq. I thought it might be good for them to see some support from
home. He also invited the local TV stations. If you can add your name
to Jay Eller's run. You might be surprised what you see.

Me too! I just bought a couple of black rock crawlers for my utility trailer and he found me a couple of good used BFG's.

Once again a huge thanks to Rick for hooking me up with a bit of bling and some rubber for the tow rig. Saved me bunch of bucks to boot!
It seems like I ran into about five AZVJCers while I was there. His store must be the unofficial meeting place, eh?
Here is a pic! Thanks
Craig
