I think you'd be more likely to see it on Fox News. How could we send
out press releases given this isn't an official AZVJC function...or
is it? Press coverage would be good (since it's pro-troop and not
necessarily "pro war") and may cause others who see the coverage to
want to participate in some way.

Ahhh, you forgot one other option, right after:
- Let clutch out quickly

I have a small enclosed utility trailer that is easy to pull behind a
Jeep if someone wants to borrow it for this USO trip. It's small but
it would double a YJ or TJ's capacity. BTW, remember the speed limit
is only 55 mph in California if you're pulling a trailer.

Subject: possible follow up to fire relief run

Hi all !
I met someone yesterday that may pose some interesting possibilities for a
follow-up to the fire relief run. He is a professional arborist that is
rehabbing a building that burnt to the ground last summer at Elliot &
Dobson.... He is turning it into an educational center for reforestation of
the rim area that was devestated by the fires last summer.... I don't know
much about it or him yet, except that his plan is to put in 90,000
seedlings... His company is called Urban environmental Enterprises, Inc. I
mentioned our involvement last year and he appeared to be very excited about
possibilities.....I don't know a thing about his financing, i.e; is he for
profit, using grant monies or whatever..... My question to the group is
this.... Do you want me to pursue this to find out more info ? Info such as
funding, associations with other groups (that could get interesting)... I
do not want to do anything to help if this is a "for profit" situation for
anyone involved... Please provide me some feedback soon... I think it could
be a great thing if all the goals and aims of his group are in accord with
ours !.... Let me know what you all think ! (Dang, that's a loaded
question !)

Date: Wed Mar 26, 2003 9:10am
Subject: AAHC Legislative Action Update on HB2386, the ticket & tow anti-cruising bill

Followup to the AAHC alert from last week.

AZ LEGISLATIVE ACTION ALERT UPDATE
HB2386 "The Ticket & Tow Anti-Cruising Bill"
Postponed at Senate NRT Hearing 3-25-03

HB2386 was not heard in the Senate NRT hearing 3-25-03. HB2386's sponsor Representative John Nelson has gotten NRTchairwoman Senator Linda Binder to hold this bill till next weeks NRT hearing.

HB2386's sponsor John Nelson has scheduled a meeting with several lobbyist's representing Arizona's motorcycling community to discuss what can be done to "protect the values he and the citizens of Glendale believe need protecting without creating unintended side affects for motorcyclists."

Whatever amendments are added will probably not change the vagueness of HB2386. We'll just have to wait and see what happens at their sit down with Rep. Nelson.

Personally, I see no redeeming qualities in HB2386. That's about the gist of what I told Phoenix lobbyist John Gozales when he called me last week on behalf of Phoenix City Councilman Claude Mattox who is another big supporter of HB2386.

My negative response is also problably why I or the AAHC were not invited to these meetings to help "craft" something that will pass. Because we simply don't want any anti-cruising bills to pass, period.

The bills backers are trying to frame HB2386 as a response to a west-side "gangster low-rider" problem that is totally exaggerated. The president of the AAHC lives in that neighborhood off of West Thomas and goes out to check every weekend evening and finds no congestion from cruisers or from anybody for that matter.

HB2386's ticket & tow tactic's could easily be applied or expanded from "gangster low-riders" to all vehicle enthusiasts as well as to the general public and cruisers at large (both 2 & 4 wheeled varieties).

Collecting vehicles is only half the fun, using them and cruising around is the other half of the equation.

HB2386 duplicates existing laws and appears to only just make it easier to tow somebody. It's intent is too vague and it's remedy is too heavy handed.

Thanks again for your calls and e-mails regarding HB2386 (those of you who did made quite an impression). I'll try to keep you posted about next Tuesdays NRT hearing. I'm sure we'll all need to call and e-mail NRT's committee members again to make sure they understand the negative impact HB2386 could have on our hobby.

Remember it's united we drive and divided, we're ticketed & towed.

The average military man
The average age of the military man is 19 years.

He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his country.

He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car than wash his father's; but he has never collected unemployment either.

He's a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student, pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has a steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when he left, or swears to be waiting when he returns from half a world away.

He listens to rock and roll or hip-hop or rap or jazz or swing and 155mm Howitzers.

He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk.

He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less time in the dark.

He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either one effectively if he must.

He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional. He can march until he is told to stop or stop until he is told to march.

He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without spirit or individual dignity.

He is self-sufficient. He has two sets of fatigues: he washes one and wears the other. He keeps his canteens full and his feet dry.

He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle.

He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts.

If you're thirsty, he'll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his food. He'll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you run low.

He has learned to use his hands like weapons and weapons like they were his hands. He can save your life - or take it, because that is his job.

He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay and still find ironic humor in it all. He has seen more suffering and death then he should have in his short lifetime.

He has stood atop mountains of dead bodies, and helped to create them.

He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and is unashamed.

He feels every note of the National Anthem vibrate through his body while at rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to 'square-away' those around him who haven't bothered to stand, remove their hat, or even stop talking. In an odd twist, day in and day out, far from home, he defends their right to be disrespectful.

Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying the price for our freedom.

Beardless or not, he is not a boy.

He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years.

He has asked nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding.

Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his blood.

I'll send out what I find and we can go from there.

Subject: Sedona meeting time and place for Sunday

Hello,

We need to get together for a leaders meeting in Sedona at 9:30 AM. Then the smaller groups will begin to depart. Please be prompt. Due to the large group size it will be very tough for us to wait for anybody that is late. If you are late we will try to accomodate you in group 7.

The location where we are going to meet has a Coffee/juice/donut shop in one building closest to Hwy 179 with a nice big parking lot between it and the next building which is the Chamber of Commerce and Forest Station (where the Red Rock passes can be purchased). Each vehicle will need a Red Rock pass at a cost of $5 per vehicle. Please show up early enough to acquire your pass and find your trip leader. Please park between the two buildings in the big lot. We have notified both the Juice shop and the Ranger Station that a large group is showing up.

Creative Juices (Coffee house with Krispy Kreme donuts)
SouthGate Plaza
7000 Hwy 179
Open at 6:30am

SouthGate Plaza Chamber of Commerce & Forest Station
Open @ 8:30 am
1 pass per vehicle ($5)

They are located after the first traffic light on Hwy 179 on the left side of the road. We can turn left at the light and then right into the plaza or use the middle turn lane to turn into the plaza. Here is a map from mapquest. I think the directions are better as the maps are not as updated as their development up there.

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?country=US&addtohistory=&address=7000+hwy+179&city=sedona&state=az&zipcode=&homesubmit=Get+Map

You will be able to spot your trip leader by looking for a Jeep flying an appropriate colored group ribbon on the anntenna. Please get with your trip leader and attach a ribbon onto your Jeep to help us stay organized. I have asked that each trip leader acquire a spool of ribbon. I will update the spreadsheet very soon with final group assignments. If at all possible print out an updated copy Saturday night or Sunday morning.

http://members.cox.net/skruize/sedona.htm

If you get there and cannot find your leader look for me. I will be near a big tan Wrangler with a purple "Daddy Longlegs" banner on the windshield. You can't miss it. My wife and I will wear our "Daddy Longlegs" purple and black baseball hats to help you identify us.

Please allow yourself all day for this adventure. Remember that this is a special group gathering and don't fret over the stop and go traffic. When all the groups have arrived at Chicken Point we will take a picture and head back out. There will be time to eat your lunch at Chicken Point. Please realize that for this to move at a fluid pace we need each vehicle to be ready to stop and roll in a fairly quick pace. There will be stops for pictures at the discretion of each group leader. If the next group bumps into you then that group will need to move along ASAP! If everybody can keep it together we won't have any trouble.

There may be breakdowns on the trail. In that case I ask that the group continue on and that a second vehicle stay with the first to help them get fixed. When they are rolling again I would hope that they can join the next group that comes by. If the breakdown is major I will make sure you get off the trail. Among other tools I've got a big hammer, a welder, and recovery gear. So one way or another we'll get you home.

I will post a copy of this at:

Where: Fiesta Mall close to Sears in Mesa

This is the second "Support Our Troops" run. The first was held last
saturday as we drove around Mesa, Tempe and Phoenix showing the
public that someone does support the Troops and the Government. We
had 9 vehicles decorated with flags, banners and horns honking. We
decided that it would better to drive around to take the message out
to the public instead of the public hearing about the anti-war
protesters on TV all day. Our mission is to show support not only for
our troops, but also for the President, families of the troops and
the Veterans. After the run, there will be a donation drop point set
up at Fiesta Mall close to Sears for anyone wishing to drop off any
donations to the troops. The type of donations was sent out in email
on Tuesday. This will be set up from 5-7 PM. All donations we receive
this and the weekend after will be taken to the USO in California
where they will mail all our donations to the Troops in Iraq and
Afghanistan. Please contact myself if you have any questions: Jeff

Hey Joe, I'm usually up until about 1 or 2am thru the week (and I
even work in the day too!) and even later on the weekends so I'll hang
with you and keep you company for at least part of the night. Then
maybe some of the early birds can take over after that! LOL

yes, we could try something like that. Also, on 3-5-03 we will be collecting donations from stores. Kat and myself are getting letters together to solicit to walmart and others. We could set up a permanant donation site somewhere all day and have the others go to the stores. We need more input on this issue though. Thanks

Trip leadership has been passed to Scott Kruize because of an emergency corporate trip to Japan that I leave for on the 24th of March. From this point forward, Scott will organize and run the trip. I am extremely disappointed that I will not be able to finish this run but I am extremely grateful to Scott Kruize for agreeing to take over the leadership role for this run. Trip Rescheduled for Sunday, March 30th. I need to have everyone involved send me a note regarding whether or not they can attend on this date. I will add/remove names as necessary.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

Greetings,

This morning, about 10 minutes ago, I phoned the Coconino Beaver Creek/Sedona Ranger District office at (928) 282-4119 to let them know that we would be running Broken Arrow and to find out if there were any other requirements such as permits that would be needed.

I described the trip and the number of Jeeps to the ranger I spoke with and asked about permits. There are no other permits required. While I was speaking with the Ranger, another Ranger overheard the conversation and joined in on the call... this new Ranger said that conditions on Broken Arrow were very wet right now and he was concerned about the vulnerability of the trails to damage under these wet conditions. The ranger asked if it would at all be possible to delay our trip by a couple of weeks to allow the trail to dry out before running it. I replied that if they had concerns about trail damage that I believed it would be in the best interest of both the trail and the group to delay this trip for two weeks.

While I am somewhat dissapointed by this turn of events... it is indeed the responsible thing for us to do. The ranger did not state that we HAD to delay the event; he only requested that we do so and left the decision up to me.

My question to the group is; should I delay the trip the minimum two weeks or should I delay it a little longer so that everyone can make arrangements well in advance. I'd like to see everyone who signed up be able to attend so I really need some feedback about how long to delay the trip.

I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused... but in the end, we will be assisting to preserve a trail that is incredibly beautiful. I don't want any bad press out of any azvjc event... and I guess that part of being a responsible Jeeper is to know when to delay a trip; and in this instance, I felt it best to heed the ranger's advice.

For those who signed up... I sure would appreciate some feedback. Based on the feedback, I will reschedule the run for a time when it is most convenient for those who signed up. The default delay, if I don't receive much feedback will be two weeks.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

For those who are meeting us at the trailhead; please plan on being at the trailhead at 10am with your passes. Group leaders will be responsible for verifying that everyone in their group has a pass.

A representative of the Forest Service will be present and will be monitoring us closely... given our past performances, I am sure they will be very happy with our group. We will be taking a nice leisurely ride down one of the most beautiful trails I've ever had the pleasure to run.

This run is perfect for even stock Jeeps (the pink Jeeps that do it many times a day are pretty much stock).

We'll be having lunch on the trail and because we'll be stopping, we'll need to purchase Red Rock passes (We'll get them as part of the trip).

This is absolutely the perfect run to take the family on and spend a nice day on a beautiful trail. If you have any questions, feel free to give me a call (602) 616-0785

Joe West

Broken Arrow is a fun trail with great scenery. A stock Jeep can make this run and there are areas for those with built rigs to test and flex their suspension, such as the Crack. Pay attention to the signs, as part of this trail is a one-way loop.

A lot of Pink Jeeps share the trail so please put your best foot forward while representing our club. For many of the passengers on those Jeep tours, you are the first real off-roader they have ever seen (gosh, that is a scarey thought!) You will find that most of the pink drivers are pretty cool!

The Devil's Staircase is fun, and some members have been known to run it bottom-to-top. If you do, please post a look-out at the top to prevent someone from coming down while you are trying to go up.

It usually takes a couple of hours to make the loop, which allows ample time for pictures and a stop at Chicken Point for lunch (you did bring lunch, didn't you?)

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

John,

Glad to hear it went well. I believe your new found hardware should do well to keep your front axle (and steering wheel) in the proper positions!

Here are some pictures of the new Currie HD steering and RE adjustable track bar that I just installed. I want to thank Stu Olson and Joe West for the good advice. The info on Stu's web site was especially helpful. The front axle is well centered now and the Curried steering components are super. The only problem was the interference of the tie rod end zerk fitting at the drag link with the steering all the way to the right as mentioned on Stu's web site. I did not have a flush mount fitting, so I modified an old zerk I had laying around to minimize the interference. The directions with the Currie components were pretty good (as opposed to non-existent as with Stu's). Also, the red tag did not exist. Instead, Currie pre-installed the tie rod end in the drag link.

But I really don't want to lose that factory look.
Has anyone seen or found factory look tail lights that are LED?
