Does anyone have a write up on how to replace a rear main seal on a 4.0 I-6 in a 95-XJ? Mine is starting to leak more all the time, so I guess it's

Todd,
I 2nd AJ's recommendation for the Well's book. I've been using it for
several years and you won't find a better one, IMO.
Also, try http://www.stu-offroad.com/others/photos-main.htm
and http://www.stu-offroad.com/ozi/wpts-1.htm
for waypoints, pics, write-ups, etc.....on many of the most popular Moab
trails.
And to think you had a resource such as this right under your nose and
you didn't even know it! (gotta learn more about your fellow club
members!) LOL

Hi Todd,
Charles A. Wells put out a good book, "Guide To Moab, UT Backroads &
4-Wheel Drive Trails". It has trails easy to difficult with good
directions and GPS coordinates.
Enjoy your trip, Moad is a great place.

Bonnie,
It is nice to see some first hand support. I know some do not agree with what we are doing down here, it is great to know there are strong supporters out there. All we see on the news is how against the war our own americans are. I hope your group can get 100 of jeeps out there to get on CNN so the boys here can see there is someone out there who is on our side.
Hope this helps you guys out!

Lon,
I was following the links your provided and found this rather
disappointing news on www.defenselink.mil The release is dated March
22, 2003. It says:
TROOP SUPPORT MAIL POLICY STRESSED
To bolster force protection, the general public is urged not to send
unsolicited mail, care packages or donations to service members forward
deployed unless you are a family member, loved one or personal friend.
On Oct. 30, 2002, the Department of Defense (DoD) suspended the
"Operation Dear Abby" and "Any Servicemember" mail programs due to force
protection concerns. Although these programs provide an excellent means
of support to friends and loved ones stationed overseas, they also
provide an avenue to introduce hazardous substances or materials into
the mail system from unknown sources. Unsolicited mail, packages and
donations from organizations and individuals also compete for limited
airlift space used to transport supplies, war-fighting materiel and mail
from family and loved ones.
Recently, DoD has become aware of organizations and individuals who
continue to support some form of the "Any Servicemember" program by
using the names and addresses of individual servicemembers and unit
addresses. These programs are usually supported by well-intentioned,
thoughtful and patriotic groups who are simply unaware of the new risks
facing deployed military forces. Some individuals and groups publicize
the names and addresses of service members, ships or units on Web sites,
with good intentions. The result, however, is a potential danger to the
troops they wish to support.
DoD cannot support creative and well-intentioned efforts that defeat
force protection measures, but can instead recommend alternatives to
mail and donation programs. To show support to troops overseas, the
following are recommended:
* Log on to the following Web sites to show support, to include greeting
cards, virtual Thank You cards and calling card donations to help troops
stay in contact with loved ones:
http://www.defendamerica.mil/support_troops.html
http://www.usocares.org/home.htm
http://www.army.mil/operations/iraq/faq.html
* Visit Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals and nursing homes.
Volunteer your services to honor veterans who served in past conflicts.
Mail from family members and loved ones has always been encouraged and
the military mail system will continue to work hard to get that mail to
servicemembers overseas.

Great post Stu. I think the pro troop rally's just make those who attend
them feel all warm and tingly inside. If they really want to support
them
write an e-mail, call your friends and family and find somebody who is
serving and write a letter to them and have them share it with the rest
of
the members of their troop, brigade, etc. Go donate blood too. There are
so
many ways to actually make a difference. I agree that standing on the
corner
yelling at antiwar protesters does nothing but possibly put yourself in
the
wrong place at possibly the wrong time when violence may erupt.
Or better yet go visit your local recruiter and sign up!

Chris,
Please understand that I very much consider myself to be as patriotic as
any
red blooded American. I am the 3rd generation in my family to have
served
in the military. My grandfather was in the Great War, my father in
WWII,
and I did an 8 year hitch during the Vietnam era. I honestly do believe
I
am patriotic, enough so that I was willing to die for my country while
defending it (and I still would if need be).
That being said, if you want THE TROOPS to know you are supporting them,
then give them one hell of a WELCOME BACK when they return....in other
words, when THEY can see you are supporting them. I can tell you, from
first hand experience, there is nothing better than to be welcomed back
home
by a HUGE crowd of people after you have been deployed for a long period
of
time.
For my take, the recent troop rally discussion seemed to be born around
the
idea of showing the anti-war protestors that others don't share the same
opinion. To me, that is showing the anti-war folks that we don't agree
with
them (and I don't)....but I don't see our troops getting much from this
message. Arguing with an anti-war protestor is like arguing with a
frickin;
anti-recreationist. Fight the fights you know you can win.
Like I said, I'll show up and WELCOME THEM HOME so THEY can see that I
support THEM!
And I do look forward to seeing you on the next trail run, LU meeting,
or
where ever we should happen to bump into each other.
Take care........Stu

I must have missed the boat when they handed out he mind reading part
of the brain. Seems like everyone knows what others are thinking
these days.
While it was posted here and people who feel the same attended I
missed the post that informed eveyone they had to feel the same way.
As far as it being OT, I agree that is why I added it to the subject
line. And while it is maybe not Jeep related the fact that we are at
war and it was to show our support for the men and women that give us
each the freedom to speak our minds, have the opportunity to attend a
rally or land use meeting and even our right to wheel our Jeeps kind
of means it does involve all of us on some level (IMO). Heck if the
armed forces don't defend our freedom we may not have land to wheel
on in the future no matter what anyone says.
As far as the issue of sad about where our support lies, while I
agree often times support at land use meetings is lower that it
should be, one is talking about loss of land the other loss of life.
If we lose land we can fight to get it back, lives you can never get
back. Right now we are fighting to be sure that we don't lose over 3
thousand lives again due to senseless attacks. THink of it another
way, which is worse if you lose your home or your child or maybe your
spouse.
I will see many of you at the next land use meeting I can make and I
will also see whoever shows up to the next support showing for our
troops.

Hey all,
I'm changing my brake pads on the front right now. I've got the old ones off and the new ones on, but the space between the pads isn't big enough to fit around the disk. I'm not too technical when it comes to terms so bare with me. Is there a way to get the inside pad further in? Can the "round thing" it rests against be moved at all? I have the Jeep in neutral and the brake resivoir cap off. Any immediate (or any other) advice is GREATLY appreciated.

The inside brake pad can and will go in. You will need a c-clamp or
they make a tool just for this and it is available at autozone or
checker for around 5 bucks. What part of the valley are you in? If
you need any help just shoot me an email.......Chris

Wade,
The piston (in the caliper) can be gently pushed back a bit to allow room for the new and thicker pads.
I usually use a C-clamp on mine but anything that will fit and allow you to squeeze it a bit will work.

I just did this at Christmas, boy was it fun.
What you need is a vice, a nut a bolt, breaker bar and some fun.
Use the bolt about 4-6 inches long to tighten one side of the spring pack together.
With some of the tension removed you may be able to turn other the two gears. It sort of spilts them out the side. If it is tight and you have a vice you turn the spider gears with the breaker bar or as I did I took turns tapping on the gears to make them turn of the sides opposite of the bolt till they spit out the side.
I had to reverse this to install new clutch pack. You have it easy just removing them.
If want more explanation call me 623-412-9447.
I wanted to give up but everybody was closed so just keep tapping away.
Good Luck

I've got the cover off, the boss pin out, c-clips removed and axles pulled out. Can't get the side gears out. I only have a Haynes manuel and it doesn't discuss this procedure. I need to get the carrier "emptied" to install a Powertrax No-Slip. Although I bought the No-Slip used it is made for the limited-slip carrier. Didn't come with intructions and all the intructions I can find on web sites seem to only address "open" carriers.

Hello,
The trip will go on!
It looks like Joe has setup multiple smaller groups as listed below.
Flight 1 --- Lead; Joe West, Gunner; Bob Jaques
Members; Mike Kelly, Mike Lopez, Steve Murdock, Allen Bernhardt, Chris Lindsey
Flight 2 --- Lead; Scott Kruize, Gunner; Don Whitehead
Members; Mike Fissel, Jonathan Dexter, Bill Scheller, Richard Logan, Keith Bowcut
Flight 3 --- Lead; Scott Rafferty, Gunner; Lon Robison
Members; Dan Lindblad, Troy Sylvia, Ruben Aviles, Stephen Metcalf, Eric Herring
Flight 4 --- Lead; Tom Le, Gunner; TBD
Members; Brandon Sudeith, John Whitaker, Scott Grigsby, Veronica O'Halloran,Frank Bell, Kit Carson
Flight 5 --- Lead; Dan Sexton, Gunner; Nichole Freemon
Members; Barry Cox, LC Lay, Jason La Montagne, Brandon Kowalski, John Teel
Flight 6 --- Lead; Rick Beer, Gunner; Brandon Reid
Members; Al Pioquinto, Jack Sheeler, Mike Acuna,Brad Gailey, Lance Wilson
Flight 7 --- Lead; Nasser Pirshafiey, Gunner; TBD
Members; Darrell Malin, Mia McCarty, Mike Reyes, Dennis Vega, Jeff Cox, Jason Brown,Joe Shikany
Joe has carefully grouped certain members together and rather than juggle members around we'll just have group 2 leave before group 1 so I can take over the lead position as requested by Joe. It looks like Tom Le and Nasser do not have a designated tail gunner. I trust these guys to pick a gunner of their choice either in advance or at the trailhead.
As usual we will use CB channel 4. It would be nice if the trip leaders of groups 1-7 would each have an FRS radio so we can communicate independently of the CB and keep things organized. I will have 2 extras available if any of the leaders do not have one.
The list above will be updated as necessary though none of the group assignments that are listed will change. If anyone drops out I will remove there name and if anyone new signs up they will be added to a group. So if you see your name listed in a group then count on being in that group.
Joe mentioned using colored ribbons to designate group members. This is great idea. I will need to acquire some ribbon today and will assign a color to each group later today. We will designate each trip leader as Red1, etc so as to make communication easier betweeen trip leaders.
We will need to stop and acquire our Red Rock passes. I will post more details as soon as I can.

Scott K

Subject: RE: Sedona trip
Darnella,
FYI: Joe and I first met on a group trip to Broken Arrow about 3 years ago. We don't wheel together as much as we used to but then again the group has grown alot and we live on opposite ends of the valley now and tend to wheel with members that live near us. Like myself he sometimes can become the center (or is that the human pinata?) of some healthy debate on the list. Sometimes we have been on opposite ends of the debate and other times we are like minded. But there are never any hard feelings on our part towards anyone and when we all hit the trail we have a good time. Not for one minute would I exclude your name or anyone elses over any discussion posted here. I'm not as mean as you might have thought though my wife is much sweeter than I. We are sort of the Sweet N' Sour of couples.
That data was cut and pasted from the website as posted by Joe. These group assignments were setup by Joe W. Click on trips and then on the Broken Arrow trip scheduled for Sunday March 30th and you will see the list. I'm working off of that. If there are people not included on there please let me know and we'll be sure to work on updating the list. I do not have the ability to edit the current trip so we will just have to post as we go.
We will assign Red, Yellow, Blue, Orange, Green, Purple, and White ribbons to various groups. I ask that the group leaders acquire the appropriate color ribbon material and ask the members to tie them to their anntena's to help us stay organized.
We need somebody to take over the lead for the group that Joe was going to lead. I will refer to that group as the Green group ( because Joe's Jeep is green ) . I hope that one of the other members can take over. We'll have group 2 leave first followed by 1,3,4,5,6, & 7. We can all meet at Chicken Point for a group lunch and picture and will leave in the order we arrived.
Please check out the following group assignments by visiting the following link. My wife, Theresa, created this spreadsheet and I have published it to my homesite. If you are shown as not being assigned to a group but Joe had told you otherwise please let me know and I will update the sheet. If you are unassigned and have a preference I will also consider that. If not I will randomly assign you to a group to even out the group sizes.
http://members.cox.net/skruize/sedona.htm
As Joe had posted you are welcome to meet at the earlier listed spot for breakfast. I will post the meeting point in Sedona as soon as I nail it down. Please bear with me through some of the confusion. Joe left with only a few days notice for Japan.
Thanks,
Scott K

As you compress the first caliper with the c clamp be sure that you put some kind of spacer on the other caliper to keep it from moving or you will have bigger problems. Once the first caliper is installed this won't be an issue when you compress the second.

You all are right!! You can not just go send mail or packages to our
troops, that is why I went to the USO.
The list that Nichoel posted today has alot of what they need, just
think of what you would need if you where trapped on a desert
island...and thats what is needed. We can NOT send
clothes, chocolate, meats, alcohol or porn.(sorry guys!!)
There will be drop off sites at Fiesta Mall by Sears Sat. the 29th
from 5pm to 7pm, and one on Sun. the 30th at Desert Sky Mall by Sears
from 5pm to 7pm. You may also drop off stuff at my home in Gilbert,
send me a email or call for directions.
I want to have everything to the USO in San Diego the weekend of
April 5th.
THANKS KAT! katnjeff4@h... 480-396-1770
By the way if you all want to do a "Run" to San Diego I can get room
rates or camp info. Let me know.

This is great idea. I will need to acquire some ribbon today and will
assign a color to each group later today. We will designate each trip

Subject: Fixing a Stripped Drain Plug
While rolling under the Jeep to get an idea of where to route a new exhaust on the YJ, I noticed a drip of oil hanging from the head of the drain plug in the oil pan.
Grabbed a socket and wrench and went to give a (gentle) little turn to tighten her up, in case it was a tad loose. Well, there wasn't any real resistance in the plug/bolt...it was that "variable" feeling you get when something has stripped out. Dammit!
So I've searched the usual parts stores for a "single oversize" drain plug, but to no avail. I did buy a standard replacement plug, in case it is what has stripped, but I've got a bad feeling it's the threads in the pan itself.
Anyone know where to find a Single Oversize, 14mm - 1.25 pitch drain plug???? This particular size was something they (A-zone, Checker, Napa) said couldn't even be ordered, either. Sound like a dealer item???
Thanks in advance,
Tom J.

AZ LEGISLATIVE ACTION ALERT
Oppose HB2386 at Senate NRT Hearing 3-25-03
"The Ticket & Tow Anti-Cruising Bill"
The Arizona Automobile Hobbyist Council (AAHC) needs your help NOW on HB2386 "The Ticket & Tow Anti-Cruising bill."
This bill goes before the Az Senate Natural Resources & Transportation Committee (NRT) on Tuesday 3-25-03 at 1:30 pm.
ACTION REQUESTED: Read the legislative update below and e-mail or call each of the seven NRT Senators listed.
Thanks for standing-up for our hobby. Remember, it's united we drive, and divided, were ticketed and towed for cruising.
Arizona motorists and vehicle clubs are asked to "politely" call or e-mail the 7-member Senate Transportation Committee only until 1:30 pm on Tuesday 3-25-03 to firmly insist that they vote no on the vague and heavy-handed HB2386.
Please let these 7-State Senators know your opinion on this important issue of personal freedom & mobility. A one or two paragraph e-mail opposing HB2386 is all that is needed to defend an activity that means so much to so many.
You could also call the Senators secretary and ask to leave a message simply requesting that they just vote NO. You don't even have to give a reason for opposing HB2386. Tell them to just say No to HB2386.
Arizona State Senate Transportation Committee Members:
Chair Linda Binder 602-542-4138 or lbinder@azleg.state.az.us
Vice Chair Marilyn Jarrett 542-5288 or mjarrett@azleg.state.az.us

A.A.H.C. Legislative Update
Oppose House Bill 2386
"The Ticket & Tow Anti-Cruising Bill"
Az House Bill 2386 subtitled as "Dangerous Driving Behavior; Violation" introduced on 2-6-03, will make recreational cruising around a violation equal to "Racing On Highways" AND/OR any other local ordinance "That Regulates Or Prohibits Processions Or Assemblages On The Highways" AND/OR "Obstructing A Highway By Creating An Unreasonable Inconvenience Or Hazard."
HB2386 will ALSO allow the ticketing police officer to tow the vehicle if permitted by local ordinance. On 3-11-03, HB2386 was amended to exempt from ticketing and towing "assemblages of less than 20 vehicles participating in or traveling to or from a legitimate event for the purpose of exhibiting vehicles."
HB2386's purposely vague ticket and tow strategy was designed to force almost ANY vehicle off the road, anytime, anywhere, coming or going, fast or slow. Even STANDING STILL (an assemblage) you could be found in violation of Dangerous Driving Behavior and have your vehicle impounded.
Also, given a broad interpretation by local ordinance's and local traffic courts, HB2386 could easily become a weapon of mass disruption to Arizona's vehicle clubs, local cruise nights and charity runs.
HB2386, also known as "The Ticket & Tow Anti-Cruising bill," easily and unanimously (12-for & 0-opposed) passed through 3 separate Az House of Representatives committee hearings. On 3-12-03, HB2386 passed to the Az State Senate by a 35-for & 22-opposed final floor vote of the Az House of Representatives.
On 3-19-03 it was assigned to two Az State Senate committee's (Natural Resources & Transportation and Rules). If HB2386 passes out of NRT on 3-25-03, the last chance for Az motorists and hobbyists to speak-up against HB2386 will be in the 7-member Senate Rules Committee. If it passes Rules, only a final floor vote of the full
Az State Senate's 30 members can determine the future of recreational cruising in Arizona.

Lon,
I was following the links your provided and found this rather
disappointing news on www.defenselink.mil The release is dated March

I can tell you, from
first hand experience, there is nothing better than to be welcomed back
home
by a HUGE crowd of people after you have been deployed for a long period
of
time.
For my take, the recent troop rally discussion seemed to be born around
the
idea of showing the anti-war protestors that others don't share the same
opinion. To me, that is showing the anti-war folks that we don't agree
with
them (and I don't)....but I don't see our troops getting much from this
message. Arguing with an anti-war protestor is like arguing with a
frickin;
anti-recreationist.

THink of it another
way, which is worse if you lose your home or your child or maybe your
spouse.
I will see many of you at the next land use meeting I can make and I
will also see whoever shows up to the next support showing for our
troops.

Subject: Need brake help...FAST!!!
Hey all,
I'm changing my brake pads on the front right now.

Regards,
Scott K

Be sure to keep an eye on the fluid reservoir when you push in the piston. You may cause it to overflow, if it's been topped up before the brake pad change.

If you want to give me a call feel free to. I'll send my number offlist.

I tested the brakes (didn't let the wife come along for fear I would endanger her life...lol) and they worked great. Thank you all TREMENDOUSLY for the input you gave on such short notice. It is greatly appreciated.

Be sure to keep an eye on the fluid reservoir when you push in the piston. You may cause it to overflow, if it's been topped up before the brake pad change.

Wade,
The piston (in the caliper) can be gently pushed back a bit to allow room for the new and thicker pads.
I usually use a C-clamp on mine but anything that will fit and allow you to squeeze it a bit will work.

Hey all,
I'm changing my brake pads on the front right now.

Yeah, I was getting the same messages when I was browsing the websites but I assumed, since Kat had spoken to a commander of the USO in S.D., that care packages would be sent through him. Maybe that has changed since the email was posted??

Subject: Care Packages & the USO

Darnella,
I think Scott probably just cut and pasted the group assignments from
the website. There have been alot of new people sign up over the
last couple of weeks and the group assignments were never updated.
I'm sure Scott will be creating new groups for all the people that
have signed up over the last couple of weeks.

these guys to pick a gunner of their choice either in advance or at
the trailhead.

This is great idea. I will need to acquire some ribbon today and will
assign a color to each group later today. We will designate each trip
leader as Red1, etc so as to make communication easier betweeen trip
leaders.
