Lon,

I was following the links your provided and found this rather
disappointing news on www.defenselink.mil The release is dated March
22, 2003. It says:

TROOP SUPPORT MAIL POLICY STRESSED

To bolster force protection, the general public is urged not to send
unsolicited mail, care packages or donations to service members forward
deployed unless you are a family member, loved one or personal friend.

On Oct. 30, 2002, the Department of Defense (DoD) suspended the
"Operation Dear Abby" and "Any Servicemember" mail programs due to force
protection concerns. Although these programs provide an excellent means
of support to friends and loved ones stationed overseas, they also
provide an avenue to introduce hazardous substances or materials into
the mail system from unknown sources. Unsolicited mail, packages and
donations from organizations and individuals also compete for limited
airlift space used to transport supplies, war-fighting materiel and mail
from family and loved ones.

Recently, DoD has become aware of organizations and individuals who
continue to support some form of the "Any Servicemember" program by
using the names and addresses of individual servicemembers and unit
addresses. These programs are usually supported by well-intentioned,
thoughtful and patriotic groups who are simply unaware of the new risks
facing deployed military forces. Some individuals and groups publicize
the names and addresses of service members, ships or units on Web sites,
with good intentions. The result, however, is a potential danger to the
troops they wish to support.

DoD cannot support creative and well-intentioned efforts that defeat
force protection measures, but can instead recommend alternatives to
mail and donation programs. To show support to troops overseas, the
following are recommended:

* Log on to the following Web sites to show support, to include greeting
cards, virtual Thank You cards and calling card donations to help troops
stay in contact with loved ones:

http://www.defendamerica.mil/support_troops.html

http://www.usocares.org/home.htm

http://www.army.mil/operations/iraq/faq.html

* Visit Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals and nursing homes.
Volunteer your services to honor veterans who served in past conflicts.

Mail from family members and loved ones has always been encouraged and
the military mail system will continue to work hard to get that mail to
servicemembers overseas.

Well said Stu. As another who was ridiculed and looked down upon during
that far off "confilict" in SE Asia, I can vouch for how much it means
to them.

Here are a couple of ways to show them you appreciate their sacrifices,
without having to wait for them to return.

Operation Dear Abby (E-Mail) http://www.operationdearabby.net
Sign Virtual Thank-You Card http://www.defendamerica.mil

Great post Stu. I think the pro troop rally's just make those who attend
them feel all warm and tingly inside. If they really want to support
them
write an e-mail, call your friends and family and find somebody who is
serving and write a letter to them and have them share it with the rest
of
the members of their troop, brigade, etc. Go donate blood too. There are
so
many ways to actually make a difference. I agree that standing on the
corner
yelling at antiwar protesters does nothing but possibly put yourself in
the
wrong place at possibly the wrong time when violence may erupt.

Or better yet go visit your local recruiter and sign up!

Chris,

Please understand that I very much consider myself to be as patriotic as
any
red blooded American. I am the 3rd generation in my family to have
served
in the military. My grandfather was in the Great War, my father in
WWII,
and I did an 8 year hitch during the Vietnam era. I honestly do believe
I
am patriotic, enough so that I was willing to die for my country while
defending it (and I still would if need be).

That being said, if you want THE TROOPS to know you are supporting them,
then give them one hell of a WELCOME BACK when they return....in other
words, when THEY can see you are supporting them. I can tell you, from
first hand experience, there is nothing better than to be welcomed back
home
by a HUGE crowd of people after you have been deployed for a long period
of
time.

For my take, the recent troop rally discussion seemed to be born around
the
idea of showing the anti-war protestors that others don't share the same
opinion. To me, that is showing the anti-war folks that we don't agree
with
them (and I don't)....but I don't see our troops getting much from this
message. Arguing with an anti-war protestor is like arguing with a
frickin;
anti-recreationist. Fight the fights you know you can win.

Like I said, I'll show up and WELCOME THEM HOME so THEY can see that I
support THEM!

And I do look forward to seeing you on the next trail run, LU meeting,
or
where ever we should happen to bump into each other.

Take care........Stu

I must have missed the boat when they handed out he mind reading part
of the brain. Seems like everyone knows what others are thinking
these days.

While it was posted here and people who feel the same attended I
missed the post that informed eveyone they had to feel the same way.

As far as it being OT, I agree that is why I added it to the subject
line. And while it is maybe not Jeep related the fact that we are at
war and it was to show our support for the men and women that give us
each the freedom to speak our minds, have the opportunity to attend a
rally or land use meeting and even our right to wheel our Jeeps kind
of means it does involve all of us on some level (IMO). Heck if the
armed forces don't defend our freedom we may not have land to wheel
on in the future no matter what anyone says.

As far as the issue of sad about where our support lies, while I
agree often times support at land use meetings is lower that it
should be, one is talking about loss of land the other loss of life.
If we lose land we can fight to get it back, lives you can never get
back. Right now we are fighting to be sure that we don't lose over 3
thousand lives again due to senseless attacks. THink of it another
way, which is worse if you lose your home or your child or maybe your
spouse.

I will see many of you at the next land use meeting I can make and I
will also see whoever shows up to the next support showing for our
troops.

They have been reporting this on CNN and Fox news all day, but I was not
sure of the applicability to the case at hand. It now seems that idea will
not work at least for now.

Subject: My Willys Diary - entry 1

Sunday, March 23, 2003

Today was a great day to work on a Jeep and an even better day to start the long process of restoring a 1951 Willys CJ-3A. As some of you may know my father, John Halverson, and I, Amanda, have acquired a Willys Jeep for the sole purpose of restoring it and giving it to me when I turn 16. We have been doing little things to it like changing the oil and fixing the brakes but today we finally started in on the big tough stuff!

First we took off the hood, after carefully taking pictures and writing on index cards so as to not forget how to put it back together. We then put paint stripper on it. We got a little anxious while waiting the grueling 30 minutes for the paint remover to work so we decided to take off the left fender, more taking pictures and writing. While the LEFT fender sat with the paint stripper on it we took off the RIGHT fender.

We worked and worked with putty knives scraping and scraping, both wondering silently about the burning sensation in our hands. I could no longer stand the pain and voiced my discomfort. We both realized that it probably wasn't the best idea to let something that could virtually melt paint on our bare skin. Two pairs of gloves each and about 4 coats of paint stripper later we discovered that there had been about 5 separate coats of paint on the hood and one or two various blotches of lime green.

We have it mostly stripped down, we had to stop because a recent illness had left us (me) slightly weaker than normal. As we came down to the last coat of paint I noticed that the Willys lettering was orange and the rest of the hood tan. Is this normal to have the lettering a different color?, and if so does the color of the letters usually coordinate with the color of, say, the wheels?

By the way I am having a little trouble deciding what color I should paint my Jeep. My dad is going for Harvest tan with Luzon red wheels, while I want just the opposite. I think that it should be red so as to draw attention to the awesomeness of my Willys. Please email me with your opinions and comments lil_willys_jpr@yahoo.com

Thanks for listening to my little story of today's events, I hope it wasn't too boring! Please respond with any information you have, it is GREATLY appreciated.

Amanda Halverson

I think parts of the links should be OK. The first two provide for
email thank you messages and the operation uplink provides for donations
of calling cards. I didn't see anything to indicate that any of the
three disclosed any information about the individual servicemembers.
Also, the defendamerica.mil site contains links to military service
organizations such as the Navy/Marine Relief Society than can always use
donations.

I can tell you, from
first hand experience, there is nothing better than to be welcomed back
home
by a HUGE crowd of people after you have been deployed for a long period
of
time.

For my take, the recent troop rally discussion seemed to be born around
the
idea of showing the anti-war protestors that others don't share the same
opinion. To me, that is showing the anti-war folks that we don't agree
with
them (and I don't)....but I don't see our troops getting much from this
message. Arguing with an anti-war protestor is like arguing with a
frickin;
anti-recreationist.

THink of it another
way, which is worse if you lose your home or your child or maybe your
spouse.

I will see many of you at the next land use meeting I can make and I
will also see whoever shows up to the next support showing for our
troops.

Good letter!!! ........ but FYI......................... The OHV fund is designated for "OHV Issues" via a grant process. Governmental agencies (ALL) can apply for grants. This money is not specifically for State Trust Lands. Part of the money did, however, fund the State Land Departments OHV Program (thusly, Tammy Pikes salary and project monies). You are absolutely correct in the fact this "raid" will cause many more problems then they believe.

PLEASE................. EVERYONE WRITE THEIR LETTER!!!!! THIS IS GOING TO TAKE HUNDREDS, IF NOT THOUSANDS, OF LETTERS TO TRULY GET THEIR ATTENTION. A DOZEN OR SO WILL BE A WASTE OF OUR ENERGY.

SHOW THEM WHAT THE OHV COMMUNITY IS ABOUT !!!!

This is very important! If you don't think your letters and phone calls make a difference, think again!
We must all write to the Governor, Senators, and ASLD Officials to tell them how OUTRAGED we are that they took the funding from OHV Management.
This action will inevitably lead to the State Land Department to becoming much less OHV-Friendly, which will result in more CLOSURES and EVENT PERMIT DENIALS.
Please get those letters out!!!!

Russell Gevarter

Dear Governor,

I would like to address the State OHV Fund that was raided this year. This
fund is generated by gasoline tax to fund State Land OHV issues. I understand that all of the 2003 money has been taken, and the 2004 money is at risk. I feel that the taking of these funds is both outrageous and unacceptable. That money was supposed to be used for OHV Management. We, the citizens of Arizona, are extremely disappointed in your decision. The money you took was intended for the management of Off Highway Vehicle use on our State Trust lands. You put people out of their jobs, and put the State Trust Land at risk.

Without these funds, there won’t be the Table Mesa cleanup events, there won’t be a liaison between the ASLD and the 4-wheel-drive clubs, Motorcycle clubs, campers and recreationalists and Jamboree participants.

There will also be losses in staff positions for enforcement and management of land use. Many of these positions had just started to make an impact on the misuse of State land and other areas.

The OHV community has pushed long and hard for education to keep our lands open to multiple use. The loss of these funds will set this program back. The State Land Department will lose its OHV Director who has worked well with the OHV community to build trust and continuity in land use.

I urge you to reconsider stripping this fund of all its money. We will only end up paying more in the future.

The State needs OHV Management.

Sincerely,

Russell D. Gevarter

I've got some black rockcrawler steel rims off of a 1963 willies.
My question is this, what size are they and what else will they fit?

I want to sell them but don't know much about what the bolt pattern
is.

Subject: [TR] Sunflower Mine Loop - Saturday, April 5, 2003

Hello All,

Brad Rogers is leading a Sunflower Mine Loop trail run on Saturday, April 5, 2003.

When: 8:00am Meet at last gas station on Hwy. 87 heading towards Payson; across from Casino (just past Fountain Hills)
Where: SunFlower Mine Loop
Rating: 3.5-
Length: Most of the day
CB Channel: 4

We had such a good trip the first time I just thought it would be fun to take a group up. Great adventure trip where you can try out your rock gaurds as well as your camera skills. If the creek is flowing your in for a wet ride, as well as some mine discovery. I believe we checked out 6 mines that were at least 100 yds long each, so bring a spot light because a flash light just doesn't cut it. Also bring some sandwiches because the trip can take a while if your into the mine thing.

The Sunflower Mine Loop is a fun trail that offers a little something for everyone. It takes 3 – 4 hours to complete allowing for time to poke around and explore. The loop starts as an easy 2.5 trail that winds along a hillside and slowly descends into the canyon. After crossing a bridge you continue up the canyon until you arrive at the Sunflower Mine site. The mine’s processing building is still standing and is in decent shape. Stock vehicles can make this section of the loop easily, however the next section requires higher ground clearance and aggressive tires.

After leaving the mine the trails continues up a shady canyon becoming more tight and challenging as it runs across and up a rocky creek bed. The bed is usually dry but can be very slippery when water is running. After awhile you make a hard right turn up a steep rock wall obstacle and continue to climb a loose rocky road out of the canyon and into the pines and junipers. At the top the trail continues with some washed out sections, passes a couple of more mine shafts, and gradually becomes easier as you return to the loops starting point.

Remember to pack water, a lunch, and bring your camera.

We all support our troops but we may do it differently. I have not met anyone who is not for our troops.

We are all saying that we support our troops but all in different ways.
Bonnie and Ross please do not leave the group.

This is short and simple to ALL the AZVJC................... please don't let our "Support" for our troops be the "break" between a camraderie that must join together in support!!!! We may all have our own way to express or demonstrate but I don't believe there is one out there that would not support............. Hang in there guys, times are most likely going to get worse before they get better..........

Land issues are thrown in here as "icing". We MUST stay UNITED! Sandee

TRYING TO HELP
By Dennis Miller

All the rhetoric on whether or not we should go
to war against Iraq has
got my insane little brain spinning like a
roulette wheel. I enjoy
reading opinions from both sides, but I have
detected a hint of
confusion from some of you.

As I was reading the paper recently, I was
reminded of the best advice
someone ever gave me. He told me about the KISS
method ("Keep it
Simple, Stupid"). So, with this as a theme, I'd
like to apply this
theory for those who don't quite get it. My hope
is that we can simplify
things a bit and recognize a few important facts.

Here are 10 things to consider when voicing an
opinion on this important
issue:

1) President Bush and Saddam Hussein.....Hussein
is the bad guy.

2) If you have faith in the United Nations to do
the right thing, keep
this in mind. They have Libya heading the
Committee on Human Rights
and
Iraq heading the Global Disarmament
Committee. Do your own math here.

3) If you use Google Search and type in "French
Military Victories,"
your reply will be "Did you mean French
Military Defeats?"

4) If your only anti-war slogan is "No war for
oil," sue your school
district for allowing
you to slip through the cracks and robbing
you of
the education you deserve.

5) Saddam and Bin Laden will not seek United
Nations approval before
they try to kill us.

6) Despite what some seem to believe, Martin
Sheen is NOT the President.
He
plays one on T.V.

7) Even if you are anti-war, you are still
an "Infidel" and Bin Laden
wants you dead,
too.

8) If you believe in a "vast right-wing
conspiracy," but not in the danger
that Hussein
poses, quit hanging out with the Dell
computer dude.

9) We are not trying to liberate them.

10) Whether you are for military action, or
against it, our young men and
women
overseas are fighting for us to defend our
right to speak out. We all
need to
support them without reservation.

I hope this helps.

Amanda,
That so much for sharing the details of your restoration. Keep the

I'm partial to the tan (sorry) w/ red wheels.

Subject: [OT]Re: Support Our Troops

What is wrong with you? You need to get out more. You think that
that is the only reason to rally in support? What have you seen on
the local news and CNN when they are not covering the war? Anti-war
rallys. What's wrong with trying to get some pro-war attention? You
don't think that our guys over there don't get CNN? The only time
they see anything on their right now from the home front is about how
many protesters there are. If we could get enough people to do some
GOOD to support what we are trying to do over there, maybe they will
pick that up and let them see that there are more people here that
support what they are doing (a recent poll found that 2/3 of the US
population SUPPORTS the war) that oppose it. They might keep their
spirits up and come home safely. There are MANY ways to show
support, ALL of which are worth doing!
Do you think that Saddam cares how we treat thier POWs? He WANTS
them dead! How screwed up is that?! How scared do you think they
are about being "tried as war criminals". What does that mean? We
will put them in a camp and feed and take care of them? Whoopie!
They will be treated better than they are now. Wea re fighting a war
that is LONG overdue. He is a tyrannical, selfish, ruthless dictator
that has NO concern for human life (even his own supporters!) other
than his own!
If you like your Jeep and the freedom to go out on a trail,
support what they are doing. If you are against what they are trying
to do, move to France. Flame away! ! !

If you have other "anti-war" opinions that you'd like to share
with reasons and rational thoughts, please, inform me. I'd love to
hear why you don't think this is a worthy cause. I haven't heard
anyone that has said their views why they don't agree. Keep it off
post if you don't want to share with the group. I really want to
know your reasons. If no one can give me any, then why are we even
debating this?

Subject: [OT]Re: Support Our Troops

Well this is one of those issues that members seem to be deeply
divided on. I guess the only thing we can count on agreeing about
unanimously is our love for Jeeps. Although I don't agree with
everyone's viewpoint on this subject, I still like everyone I've ever
met on the group and apart from this subject, I know we almost all
get along just fine. PLEASE DON'T QUIT THE GROUP BECAUSE YOU DON'T
AGREE WITH SOMEONE! Ride it out and delete these posts if you don't
want to read them.

Regarding this issue, I'm moved by this note from Bonnie and it does
appear as though news about even small acts of support somehow make
it to the troops and have a positive impact. I wonder how many fellow
soldiers Bonnie's brother told. If one soldier appreciated it then it
was worth it, in my opinion.

The support "run" on Saturday got a HIGH response from people in other
vehicles and pedestrians and 98% of the responses I saw were positive
(we encountered only a few protesters) . Some people pulled up next
to us, rolled down their car windows and yelled "God bless our
troops!" or "USA, USA, USA" or "Support Our Troops!". Some asked
where the protesters were so they could go down and offer an opposing
view. Most simply beeped and gave us a thumbs up in agreement. I
wonder how many of those people sent a note about the encounter to a
family member or friend who is serving in our military. I was proud
to be an American and proud to hang out with our small group of
Jeepers supporting the troops and would do it again in a heartbeat.

I'd like to suggest we do this run again next week, perhaps on
Saturday. The way things are going with the war, it looks like there
will still be fighting for some time to come (unfortunately). It
would be great if we could get even more from the group involved and
I'm hoping since we have almost a week to organize it that we'll get
more involvement. Just like land use meetings (although the support
run is not an official club function), if you can make it, great and
if not, fine. REMEMBER: THIS IS NOT NECESSARILY PRO-WAR, RATHER PRO-
TROOPS.

BTW, I also go to land use meetings and not just ones that are
convenient to me. I think both issues need support.

Lastly, there is one more thing I think we all agree on and that is a
wish for a quick end to the conflict and the safe return of our
military men and women. To all who serve or have served, thank you.
To all who have family or know someone in this war, my thoughts and
prayers are with them and you.

I took almost 3 rolls which I turned in for developing and scanning
today. Yeah, I'm still on old technology, photographically speaking.
I should have them up Tuesday night and I'll post a link to where
