Ok, Tony has a contact that is planning on doing a 20 hour class for our group. It will be Friday night, Saturday and Sunday.
Wilderness First Aid plus CPR for Professionals (adult, child, infant).
The class is designed for people who are more than 30 mins. from EMS.
First thing we need to do is pick which weekend works best. The 2 options are August 15-17 or September 5-7. Location will be decided by us.
The class will be a minimum of $60 per person. There are a couple other options that would make the price more, but you would get stuff to take home. Do we want to build first aid kits in class? Cost of supplies will be additional. Do we want to take the books/materials home or return them to instructor at the end of the class?
Poll will close August 10.
I've made it so you can choose multiple items also. If you have other comments, please post them in this thread.

What is the estimated cost for the first aid kit?
What is the estimated cost for the text?
Best regards,
Mike

so this will be separate from regular first aid training, correct? Because Grunt is able to arrange FD to do it for 25.00 for regular first aid/cpr.
I just want to ensure that these are 2 separate classes because if Grunt can get it done for 25.00 instead of the lofty sum of 60.00 for the same class, that would certainly make more sense. If it is a different course entirely, then that is a different issue altogether.
In perspective, 60.00 is the usual cost of 1 hour of semester credit at a community college taken over an 18 week period meeting once weekly.

Additionally, will this class be reoffered sometime in the spring, because I am interested but will be out of state for almost the whole month both August and September due to military commitments

What is the difference between the Tony and Grunt classes, other than cost?

Tony is probably going to have to answer most of your questions. The Grunt class is only 4 hours or so and mainly first aid and CPR. The 20 hour class for the above poll will cover those items and many more focusing on the wilderness first aid.

I don't have costs for the first aid kit or book at hand, but will get it. The difference is that this is a 20 hour class with PRO CPR (adults, children & infants) designed for people who will be more than 30 mins. from EMS. We can arrange to repeat the class as needed. As far as I am concerned the folks responding with J.E.E.P. need to have a first aid card of some/any type. The Wilderness First Aid class is one of a few options.

Here's the Red Cross class details for Wilderness First Aid -
http://www.arizonaredcross.org/Education/course.aspx?c=3374
Red Cross wants $125, $60 seems like a good deal. There are big differences betweeen the different training classes.........one of them being this cert is good for 3 years once earned.

Amber,
The class I was setting up is solely CPR/AED, and would be held at one of our facilities. Looks like someone had a better lead, with Scottsdale offering it cheaper. Regardless, both of these are just CPR. Tony seems to have a lead on a class that falls more in line with what you are looking for. This class appears to not only teach first aid skills but has practical applications during the lesson. I am uncertain if Tony's package offers the CPR, but if not it would seem that the Scottsdale CPR + Tony's class would be the cheapest.
Tony, is this a class yopu or your business puts on or is it an autonimous group?
Rich is right, sounds like a deal.

Based on the info provided, I am leaning toward the "Wilderness First Aid" ...

Grunt, Dallas Lane is doing it. He is an ASHI instructor and does NASAR too. I know Dallas from CAP. He puts these on for CAP and the Pinal County SAR groups. This would include CPR.

My question, is this class something that my 7 yr old can participate in? I would like to get him involved in more wilderness training, cpr and such.

I got my First Aid card when I was about 8. I can ask Dallas if he has any objection.

What is the estimated cost for the first aid kit?
What is the estimated cost for the text?
Tony, can we get these 2 questions answered?
Can the text and first aid kit be offered as an optional fee? For example, I already have a first aid kit. Why not cover a list of what a first aid kit should include, so if I find mine does not have a certain item, I can add it later. Or people that don't have one at all can pay the extra fee and build one from scratch at the class.
Thanks.

Here's a good link that I think is close to the class that is being offered for us. Check out the course outline at the bottom too. LINK (http://www.nols.edu/wmi/courses/wildfirstaid.shtml)
One question: How does the Wilderness first aid class differ from a Wilderness first responder class?
The first responder classes that I've known about are quite extensive and worthwhile. Definitely a step up from a standard CPR/AED class.
Thanks

The Wilderness First Aid class is listed in the link in my previous post as being 16-24 hours. The Wilderness First Responder is listed as 80 hours class time. I think the first responder course is geared more for the professionals that do it for a living.
We took it years ago, due to guiding hunters and river rats for week/s at a time. Thanks for the clarification, as the name made it sound similar and for the cash you were asking, it was beyond a great deal.

I have taken both the CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer class and the Wilderness First Aid Class fron the American Red Cross, and I gotta tell you that they are quite
enlightening and comprehensive. I would recoment the Wilderness Course, and getting the Med. Kit for what you all are wanting to accomplish. I came accross some folks who rolled an SUV out at Butcher Jones a while back, and I was glad that I had the knowledge and the supplies. Just my 2cents worth.

Is it time to close the poll and get Dallas scheduled? We may have more people for the September date than he would prefer. Maybe we should add another date later in September or October.

Sure, it looks like the September weekend clearly won. We can get the first class scheduled and see how it goes. With enough interest, a second class can be offered.

How does one of us commit to the class? I dont want to miss the opportunity by being late to sign up.

Class will be Sept. 6 & 7 starting at 8:30 AM. Tentatively at the Land Rover dealership on McDowell.
To speed up the process, Dallas will give the adult CPR class instead of PRO CPR (adults, children, infants). This will allow us to skip a Friday evening session.
Cost info. to follow.
