So I took my Jeep to this place and he said the diagnostic was $95.00, fine....whatever. Then he calls me, leaves me a message saying he ordered parts for it (without my consent or signature) is this normal? Do I have to pay him for this or what? I thought I only signed for diagnostic.....
I guess we will know tomorrow.

Only pay for what you authorized.

sounds like he might have been trying to be helpful. They did try to contact you but werent able to reach you. They found the problem with the vehicle and assumed you would want it fixed. Rather then waiting the next day to contact you and put the repair time farther out they tried to speed things up so you could have your ride back as soon as possible

Agreed that they may just be trying to help, which is nice and all... but not necissarily normal for a shop to do... a dealer definatley would not do that unless you authorized the order/part/install. Just remember that because you DID NOT authorize the shop to order the part, you do NOT have to pay for it. You should be under no obligation to do anything further, however if you want to have it installed or want the part then they have just helped you out quite a bit.

The name of the shop is Desertmotive in Scottsdale Airpark area. Thanks for all the comments on this subject, I told the shop that I replaced a bunch of parts (they look new) so if they re-install my new parts with new parts I'm gonna be pissed.

I never heard of them, although there are many businesses in the scottsdale airpark.

So the problem is ________? From my other posts, I mentioned that the engine turns but there was no spark, I multi-meter tested everything I knew and it all tested fine. I replaced the coil, distributor, starter relay, ignition module, checked wires, changed spark wires and plugs.....I even changed out the ECU!
I guess I pertty much rebuilt the electrical system.

Well I spoke with the shop and they said the combination of the New Distributor and the Ignition Module I put in were wrong so he put in another distributor/Module and it now works....I dunno. So whats the damage you ask?
$500.00 down the crapper.
"Why so much" you might ask, well when I pick it up tomorrow I'll find out. Perhaps they charge $100.00 per hour labor, but I know they didnt spend more than 3 hours on it....and parts were how much....around $200.00? Unless they put in a D.U.I. Distributor I just dont see it.

just ask for your old parts back and take them back to where ever you got them and tell them they were wrong. 500 really isnt to bad for dist. replacement, ignition mod replacement and setting timing plus parts.

I will definately get my old parts back, although they are pretty much non-refundable but I only paid $60.00 for the Distributor and $35.00 for the Module....E-Bay will probably get alittle bit of my cash back. Thanks for the positive note, it makes me feel better about spending the money I was going to use for a fill up of gas...it's about $500.00 a tankfull these days, right?

$500 does not seem out of line for a daignostic, parts and labor. Sounds like the shop did a good job after all.

I would ask the shop specificly what was wrong with the distributor. It's not like there is much in there other than a magnetic pick-up and weights. All the pick-up has to do is create a little voltage and send that signal to the module. I could definitely see the issue being the module though. Even new modules are sometimes junk. But those are easy to test. Just plug in your old one.

Well......Picked it up today and it started bogging down & backfiring real bad. I could not even go over 35 and at green lights I had to turn the hazzards on because it had NO pick up. So I called them back, they said most likely it was the Carburetor, so I got pissed off and went to napa with my NEW one and they ordered a another new one in exchange ( one week wait...again ). If it's not the carburetor I'm gonna totally flip out. This is a photograph of my headache~

What's your next solution? Engine swap?

You never described your original problem. What prompted you to start buying parts from E-bay? Many problems can be intermittent, such as engine torques over and pulls wiring to fuel pump. Engine dies, no torque, no pulling wires, pump runs fine. Just an example to make a point, It's not always black and white.

Still sounds like electrical problem. Double check they have the wires hooked up in right order on distributor.

Could it be the timing from the distributor change? It is a really nice jeep by the way.

When I was building my CJ, I put in all new electrical and still had problems that were making me crazy. Then I installed a HEI and problems were GONE. $150 for a HEI and about 30 minutes was the best money and time I have spent to date!!!!!
PS If anyone needs electrical stuff for a 258 come and get it, it's free and all new
