I can understand, If my work didnt have a vanpool I would either have to quit my job because I couldnt afford to drive to work or Trade for something with better gas mileage.

Just currious, what is the return on doing such a trade? Was the Jeep paid for, how much interest will you pay on the new vehicle, and based on miles you will drive for the difference of gas mileage?
Could be years before you break even? Just asking :)

they did that comparison on ext 4x4 a while back.....don't recall their exact numbers (new car pmt/gas mileage savings/etc.)....but they figured it would take about 13 years for it to be cost effective.....

I think the whole cost effective calculations people do are a bit silly. I get it all the time with the Prius at the gas pump. You'd be amazed at the amount of people that have exactly the same conversation with me. "So, is the price difference worth it? You know you'll never make your money back".
In the case of Ted, he got rid of one vehicle and got a more fuel efficient one. Assuming he wasn't upside down out of control, he gained a new (probably with more options) and better driving car. Since he spends most time on road rather than off, it's probably a good deal.
In the case of the episode on Extreme it referred to adding an additional vehicle and how long it would take for the price difference of fuel to pay for the new vehicle. Without going into drawn out math, if the vehicle was $5k, how long would your monthly fuel savings take to make up $5k worth of savings. This completely ignores the fact that you now have another vehicle... to many (most) having another vehicle has value over just the fuel savings of not driving your primary vehicle. For example, several years ago I was driving about 110 miles per day for work (5 days per week). I ended up buying a old Nissan hardbody for a couple of grand because my primary vehicle was about $50k and I knew if I piled on miles every day that it would depreciate out of control. In my case, the savings of fuel (more than double), combined with the fact that my primary vehicle would depreciate much much less by the time I went to trade it in more than paid for itself. These types of scenarios are rarely calculated in the "it will take 13 years to pay for itself" arguments.

I was upside down $8,000 only got $3,300 trade in, car was $17,000 but all in all ill be saving about $200 extra every month that will go into a savings for another jeep. sorry to here you had to trade your jeep for a car! But my question is, was it realy worth it? do you feel safer in this car? will you see that much of a savings in fuel? could you get another job? being times are tuff, how much harder do you think its going to be before you get another jeep? I dont know, but I do know that, my jeep dosnt get the greatest gas milage, and I wouldnt trade it in, I enjoy wheeling to much!

Right now Suv's are worth $4,000-5,000 less than they were 3 months ago. Trading one in right now makes no sense, Its better to buy a cheap car and pay for it using your gas savings.
We had a 2wd toyota Fj we owned for $26K, 3 months went by and we had to "write down " the FJ to $21K. We sent it auction and they passed on $16K and we had to sell it on the lot.
Keep your Jeeps and Suv's and buy a small car

i did the same thing once. i traded a dodge dakota that i was upside down only a couple g's for a neon. BECAUSE I WAS DESPERATE. it lowered my payment and got better gas mileage than the truck but i don't think i ever broke even. i made a big mistake but i think you made a huge mistake. you sold your jeep to save 200 bux a month  you're not going to save that 2 hundy a month. you need it to get by. i understand that. i've been in the position that i needed more cash flow for the household. i paid in the long run. much more than i should have. good luck man, i hope it works out for you. the chances of you saving the 200 a month for a new jeep are pretty far out there.you wouldn't have set yourself back all that interest + 5k if you didn't need the liquid cash to pay bills every month. saving for a jeep is not on your priority list or you wouldn't have sold it for 3k.
i hope you enjoy your new car. what did you spend 17k on?

Are TJ's taking the hit as much as other SUV's? Seems like he could have put it in the paper for more than that and sold it quickly. Heck, a buddy of mine is a wholesaler and the main vehicle he snatches up every time at auction are Jeeps because he tends to be able to move them quicker than most other vehicles.
I had to do it man I was cutting it so close every month that i would only have $2 -$3 bucks in my account left. So if anything unexpected would happen i would be screwed

Tj's are not so bad, Anything under 20 mpg is hurting right now! If people hang loose and get used to $4.00 a gal everything will be fine, the world is not ending quite yet..Thats how people are acting. Don't watch the EVIL news, read a book or spend time with your family.
PS. In most cases trading in your truck or Suv makes no financial sense to replace it for 10mpg Better, Maybe mentally when it says $65 instead of $125 at the fuel pump!! Anyway you look at it $4-$5,000 is Alot of gas!!

The reason I asked him is this. My situation is as follows.
I have a 1998 TJ paid for, gets about 14 mpg.
I have a 2005 Gold Wing, $316 / month but gets 40 mpg
I have a 2002 F150, $215 / month gets about 15 mpg
I'm going to be unemployed in a few months and the best job I can come up with is about 50% of what I make now.
Option 1: Sell the truck. Well I owe $5000 on it and could probably get $6500 - $7000. So I get rid of $215 paymnet but with the $1500 - $2000 leftover I can't get a decent car for the wife to drive so I'll have a new payment.
Option 2: Sell the Jeep, but it is paid for and that leaves me nothing to drive but the bike. Hard to get much done on a bike, but it is nice to drive to work. Plus I'll have to buy another jeep, and this one is worth way more than I could ever get for it.
Option 3: Sell the bike. I get rid of $316 payment. I drive the jeep which gets 1/3 the gas mileage but even driving 40 miles / day I'll save about $160 each month without the payment and paying more for gas. Sux to get rid of a high mileage vehicle but the payments make all the difference. Plus the bike insurance is a lot higher than the jeep.

You're worried about a few hundred dollar a month payment and you're going to start a business? I would say that you really need to make sure you will have the cash flow to get a new business off the ground or the $300 a month savings will be least of your worries.
Without the business in the equation, I agree to sell the bike and then use the savings to pay off your truck early and save on interest. Then you'll have $500 a month to save.
With the business in the equation (yikes!), I agree with Terron, sell them all and get the cheapest car and truck you can find that runs well.

As I mentioned before, how does it make sense to loose $4-5K on any suv right now??? My jeep costs $3,000 a year for gas and I drive it a good 18-20K per year. Now My Vw payment with insurance is $4740 per year..Thats $145 per month out of my pocket and $3,000 less for BIG OIL:drummer:
Buy a fuel sipping car or bike for the est fuel costs and you will own something in the end instead of being unhappy when gas goes down to $3.50 a gal in 6 months.

I'm not all that worried about the couple hundred dollars right now but I'm just trimming down. The interest on the truck is only $25 / month. No real savings there.
The business I am going to start up is one I have run for 10 + years and I can revive it in about 2 weeks. I'll be making money from day one. That is not the problem. The problem is a career I have been nurturing for 20+ years, cost me tons of money and time to get there is going away probably never to return. Th best I could probably do is about 1/2 what I am making now by going to a new job so the business start up is my only option to keep from total financial melt down.
I actually expect my employer to fail within a year or less or at least pull most of it's business from PHX.

I assume that $8,000 got tacked on to the new loan. Do yourself a favor and make extra payments on your new loan, especially at the begining. An extra $75-100 a month can cut about a year or so off the loan. Either way, make sure you get ahead on the loan before thinking about another jeep.
I just took out a small loan to get myself an older honda civic. The savings in gas easily pays for the loan and insurance, and then some. It's tough driving around @ 13mpg.

I think a lot of people did get scared and run out and buy the cheapest cars they could find. I see lots of Versa, Corolla, Civic type cars out there running around with new car tags... I went to a small car as well, but I did not buy something boring to drive that I'm going to regret. I really truly feel for those who did.

he also sold his z71 and possible made a few dollars on it but not much, and sold his sandrail for cheap.

We are conditioned to pay a higher ammount $3.87 for unleaded looks great now and $4.38 for diesel also looks great. There is noway the prices will ever get below $3.00 a gal and $3.00 a gal also looks good now!
