i hear that the 350 pretty much bolts in these days... so that would be an easy choice.
or a HEMI! that would be the fun choice :)

I take it you didn't see Xtreme 4x4 this weekend? They put a 5.7l hemi into a TJ. The engine/tranny/computer I believe they said was $2k all together from a wrecking yard (I believe the engine was from a 2005 Dodge truck). Not sure what your budget is.

yeah i saw that one too. tera flex has the whole wiring harness kit including mounts for the motor, skid plate and i believe the gas pedal too. if you're gonna register it the motor has to be the same year or newer than the jeep.

Cool, just make sure if you're going to register it for the street that you pay attention to the requirements to get it legal. I've never researched myself, but I've heard the requirements cited on Xtreme are similar to the requirements in AZ. Where the engine has to be the same year or newer. The requirement about the engine having been available by that manufacturer was interesting to me... I hadn't looked into the requirements enough to come across that so I don't know if that's a requirement in AZ... but it makes sense to me... so in your case that will be a problem. Can anyone confirm this requirement in AZ?

360 wasnt used after 91, so depending on year of your YJ, might not be legal. as much as I love my AMC V8's, would go chevy or buy one that has already been done and build on it

Let me start by saying I have a swapped in V-8 in my Jeep and love it.
That being said I want you to make an informed decision.
Check out Novak online. They have lots of informormation about the best engine swaps. They also have info on, transmission, and transfer case swaps.
With Novak start here.
http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/engines_general.htm
and then check out their info on transmission and transfer cases to see which do and don't stand up to a V-8.
I have had the AMC 360 in a number of Jeeps.
Stock they are not much on horsepower compared to a stock Chevy 350 but they make more Torque at lower RPMs.
Do you have to do emissions? As someone mentioned an AMC 360 may not be a legal swap for you.
The AMC 360 is usually not as durable as a Chevy 350. AMC block is stronger (more nickle) but oiling system is inferior.
Much like Novak says on there site, although transplanting a V-8 from another Jeep into a smaller Jeep seems logical, in general a Chevy V-8 transplant has advantages over another Jeep engine in just about all catagories.
Compared to an AMC 360, a Chevy small block will run cooler, is lighter, will last longer, get better gas mileage, will be less expensive to install, part will be easier to find, and it will have more horse power.
For longevity I would go with a mostly stock 350. More hoursepower and torque with a modified engine means not only more money, but it will wear out faster.
Now if you want more horsepower and more torque and want the pride of building one a 350 stroked out to a 383 will do the trick and last almost as long as a stock 350. Make sure you have highback seats, otherwise when it shifts from 1st to 2nd you may get whiplash.
Not to discourge you from a V-8, but you might be happier with a V-6 (chevy 4.3 is a good choice) or the AMC 4.0 straight 6. Few if any other straight 6's will fit. Go back to
http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/engines_general.htm
and check out the info on V-6 swaps.
With a V-8 you must consider that your transmission, brakes, front and rear axles, and transfer case may not be up to the added weight, horse power, and torque of a V-8. Depending on how you drive this may not be and issue. Your stock components will stand up much better to a 6 cylinder, and it my get you everywhere you want to got for a lot less gas.
Straight or V-6 will also run much cooler and may not need the expense of a new radiator and electric fans.
But I am guessing that you are like me and a V-8 means bigger tires, racing your friends in the sand, and some rock crawling.
So unless you go with a V-6 swap, eventually plan on upgrading the rest of your power train and axles too.
Some will say they have done fine on stock components with a V-8 swap, but in my opinion it is just a matter of time before they are looking at major expenses if they wheel hard off road.
Tom
just my opinion, an opinion I learned from a few left hooks to the wallet.
