Hi all,
I just got home from being towed off an exit ramp(stranded there for 30 minutes), due to my u-joint falling to the ground. I am not a mechanic by any means, but I give it my best. So, the part is missing from the transmission to the differential. I of course have the part that fell and I couldn't tell you what needs to be done now. I absolutely need to get this part fixed and the jeep up and running ASAP, since it is my only means of transportation. Anyone know anybody that can help? I think the part may be fine (don't quote me, because again I don't know!), looks like I am missing a bolt at the dual end and the bolts look somewhat corroded. HELP!

Sounds like your rear u-joint broke or fell off. Then the front pulled out of the transfer case and fell on the road where you picked it up from. Any auto store will sell you the part you need, but you need to determine what is broken so post up pictures of the drive shaft (the round thing you have in your hands) as well as a picture of the front of the differential. I am sure somebody who lives in Chandler would be able to help out.

Robbin you will more than likly need a 1310 U-Joint. I would suggest that you go ahead and get 2, since you might as well replace them both. If you are looking for strength go for Neapco since they are of the non greasable type and are 25% stronger. Or if you want one that you can grease get a Spicer, both are made in here in the good ole USA. Personaly I would suggest the Non Greasable and I'm sure the discussion could go back and forth on that for ever. Good luck.

Also, should it ever happen again, you don't have to wait to be towed. You can put it in 4WD high and drive away in front wheel drive. Of course you don't want to do this unless the drive shaft is completely removed, like yours is.

Dude, I don't think that PMS would have caused it to break.

Thank you all so much! I learned that when the drive shaft falls off--4WD does work(got it into the garage!!). And also it got fixed last night--we put on a new u-joint and new bolt and clamps to the diff. All is going well so far and you guys are all lifesavers and I appreciate all of your help and knowledge!! So---back up and running!!WooHoo!!

You just gotta love Jeeps, they are usually so easy to work on. Roll them over and put them back up and they still get you home. Ask me how I know......

You should probably consider replacing the front u-joints since they are probably the same age as the rear ones.

if you still have the original transfer case make sure you plug up the rear output ( empty 20 oz bottle and duct tape) if you drive in front wheel drive. otherwise fluid will leak out.
