Well I got the word today that we are laying off pilots and I'm one of them. Looks like no wheeling for me for a while.
I'm gonna be looking for a new job in about 2 months if anyone needs someone. I owned and operated a window cleaning business for 7 years. I have a degree in Energy Processing and Plant Technology. I also have a degree in Aviation Management.
Gonna be a long summer :(

Sorry to hear that Bill. Hope you guys are going to be okay.
You're more than welcome to come to my house and brush up on your window washing skills, and I won't even charge you anything for the practice!
But seriously, I'm sorry you got the boot, dude!

Bill, who did you work for? I fly for a living too, but luckily I'm corporate with a company that is still doing okay with this (recession) economy we are having.

Hey Bill hopefully it won't happen for a while. There are alot of factors in play as you are aware of ie east vs. west so you never know and won't be till 3rd quarter i'm guessing.

Bill,
Us Airways is losing a really great employee in laying you off. That is rediculous. Have you looked into alegiat and jet blue out of williams gateway airport? Those littler airlines seem to be doing well - they sure do charge a lot less (but less flights to less places)...I know they fly to Washington DC from here a lot. Maybe you could pilot a cessna for rich people??? Any drug lords in need of a pilot with a great sense of humor??? :) this way you could travel to beautiful columbia and costa rica, but possibly be shot at.
And as always, the Army National Guard is always looking for pilots for the Apache's and Blackhawks, as well as commissioned officers. We are taking up to 40 year olds now and officers make a lot of money...even flight chiefs...You're under 40...and the military never does lay offs...(Cary probably wouldn't like me mentioning that idea though :o)
This way you could travel to beautiful Iraq and Afghanistan, but possibly be shot at --- which you could reciprocate with rockets and a hail of gunfire.
If there is anything we can do, let us know. You guys need to come by for dinner soon.
Brian

sorry to hear about your job.... i can understand what you are feeling and what you will be going through. just remember to keep your head up and dont let it get between your family. that can really hurt.
on another note, im not sure what aviation job you are looking for. but Skydive Arizona could probably use a pilot about this time of year!
good luck with you job search.

If I thought it was going to be a short furlough I would jump on that or any other flying job just to stay current but I think this is gonna be a long painful road for the airlines and I might be out for 10 years or so. With that in mind, I have to get serious and find a new career that can pay the bills and allow me to save for the future.
From what I was told there will be 10 in Sept, 30 in Oct, 0 in Nov, 50 in Dec, (Merry Xmas) and the rest through March. That means I'll probably be working through Feb or March so I'll have some time to get some things in order.
This is one of the few careers where this is a normal thing every 5 or so years but this one is really bad :(

You should consider working on real planes.:punk: Its not all that bad. Pretty scary industry right now though. I dont know if I would stay in avaition either though if I was laid off. The omly problem is it is about all I have done for the past 12 years. Airframe/powerplant/fcc license dont qualify me for much outside aviation. Good luck Bill you will find another good job.

A couple friends of mine got jobs instructing at Pan Am at Deer Valley airport. As CFI's but it pays the bills. There is also a nice place in Nogales that trains students from India. Cheep housing shared with other instructors. Then you can wheel with me on the weekends......

Unfortunately I let my CFI ticket laps about 12 years ago :(
I got my date from the CP's office, looks like Dec 31 will be my last day. I'm looking at going back into process plant work or even changing careers all together. I've had enough of this roller coaster life style.
If anyone has any inside info on a job I'm interested. Not really looking for something to pay the bills, I'm looking for a new career.

That sucks. Best of luck! I know that if skywest were to furlough me, I would'nt go anywhere else. I think I'd go work at home depot and wait for the callback. I dont have a degree, so I really dont have a fallback plan. Flying airplanes is all I know.
I was in the jumpseat on southwest with an america west guy about 2 months ago, he got the big f also. He said that while airways was f'ing west guys, they were hiring new east guys. any truth to that?

I heard there are 5 guys in class on the eastcoast for the 1990.
Problem is that if I DO ever get called back my seniority would put me in the E190 in PHL for 1/2 what I make now. No thanks. I'm done with aviation. Need a new career.
Bill,
I just noticed this thread - guess I don't read too thoroughly.
Really tough news! I'm sure you'll find a new opportunity that will make you happier, but the meantime stinks. Sorry!

Randy:No, still looking. I'm thinking about going back to school. Some of the jobs I used to do now require a degree in engineering. Oh well, times change I guess.
