Importance: High

Folks,

Mike and Jim are very correct. We only have 11 members signed up as a
definite. We need to get some more to join the clean up at Sycamore
Creek area. How about it? There isn't another cleanup scheduled for a
while. Let's see if we can get at least 50.

There are some important land issues being discussed and decided on
these days, and when we (the OHV community) show our involvement like we
did at Table Mesa, the agencies take us more seriously and count us a
credible user and resource group. That is why they are starting to
listen to us, and hopefully act in our favor.

It is imperative to have a strong showing at Sycamore. Just
volunteering for a few hours this Saturday will go a long way!

Thanks,

Nasser

Subject: Fwd: BLM Statement regarding CA OHV Commission's denial of BLM grant request for Imperial Sand Dunes

Please note the potential impact of this action. The OHV Commission
is responsible for allocating money to grants for recreation. The
money in question is part of what is called the "Green Sticker"
funds. The source of this money is from gas tax paid by off-road
recreationists and by state law is required to be spent on recreation.

As new commission members appointed represent environmentalist
interests, the recreation activities that generate these funds are
being shorted or denied their portion.

Many states are working to establish (or have) similar programs.
This is an example of how a good program can be destroyed.

*****************************************

Statement regarding CA OHV Commission's denial of BLM grant request
for Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, Imperial County, California,
January 23, 2003

Background: BLM requested $1.4 million in grant funds for the
Imperial Sand Dunes. These grant funds have been provided by the
state for many years to match federal appropriations for this area,
comprising about 160,000 acres. In December 2002, the commission
granted $292,000 to assist with the dramatically increasing law
enforcement costs at the Dunes for peak holiday weekends, when
visitation can sometimes exceed 200,000 people. At that time, the
commission deferred a vote on the additional funds ($1.1 million in
operations and maintenance funds) until today's meeting. Annually,
more than 3 million people visit the Dunes, considered a world-class
recreation area. (Correction 1/24/03: an analysis of recent figures
shows that about 1.4 million people visited the dunes in 2002).

Today's 4-3 vote was attributed by some commission members to BLM'
not yet completing the update of the 1987 Recreation Area Management
Plan (RAMP) that is currently underway. The update was needed to
address increasing visitor use and protection of listed species,
including the threatened Peirson' milkvetch. BLM published a draft in
March of 2002 and is currently reviewing the 10,000 comments received
and consulting with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in preparation
of the final plan, which should be completed sometime this spring or
early summer.

BLM Statement:

"We are very disappointed in the commission's action today. BLM has
always considered OHV recreation in California to be a partnership
between the federal and state governments, with BLM supplying the
land and recreation opportunities, and the state assisting us in
funding through the grant program.

The denial of $1.1 million in grant funds will have a significant
impact on the Dunes and the more than 3 million people who visit the
Dunes annually. These funds were to be used for visitor services,
including sanitation facilities, trash removal, environmental
monitoring and countless other activities.

BLM is diligently working the Recreation Area Management Plan for the
Dunes and we have been delayed only due to the large volume of public
comments and the complexity of trying to balance the intensive public
use with the need for environmental protection, particularly
threatened wildlife and plant species.

We hope that when the plan is completed in the late spring or early
summer, the commission will revisit today's action and reinforce the
long partnership BLM has had with California in providing recreation
opportunities to the public.

If the funds are not restored, BLM would not rule out other options
for the Dunes, including raising fees, reducing services, moving
funds from other recreation areas in the desert, or other
cost-cutting measures. Such measures would be regrettable, as much
progress has been made recently to provide services to the families
that have historically enjoyed this area."

Hey Scott,

FWIW, I'm sorry about that confusing comment. I read Nasser's original post and just assumed it was near the Uncle Bear's (hey, there USED to be car shows over there!). I was at UB's around 5:30/6:00 and couldn't find the show either. The guys at Checker thought it was back at Arizona Ave, so headed back over that way and noticed the group parked at McQueen/Warner. Sorry you missed it.

To everyone else, was good seeing you. I can't wait to get my Jeep rolling again!

I tried to go to this last night but couldn't find it. Never saw a
location so I just went by the comment about it being across from
Uncle Bear's. The only UB's I found was at Cooper and Warner. I drove
all around that area last night just before 7pm and didn't see
anything resembling a group of people looking at cars. Ended up just
eating at UB's around 7:30. Didn't see anyone or any Jeeps that I
recognized but at least the food was great. So where was this thing
anyways???

I'm planning to head up to the Scottsdale Pavillions tonight around
5:30 or 6 if anyone's going to be there. Look for a white TJ with a
white soft top and 35s.

those numbers sound right to me. My Waggy 44 was less than 1" wider
than my YJ Dana 30. I think your 44 with allows and CTM's will be
plenty strong for 37's.

james,

Converting from 5-on-4.5" to 6-on-5.5" doesn't leave enough room
between the holes. Two of the holes will almost touch each other.

You can convert between certain patterns but not necessarily between
all patterns.

We are making progress in establishing ourselves with the land
management folks and this is yet another chance to help solidify that
relationship.

Although I can not make the Sycamore cleanup (just as some folks
couldn't make Table Mesa), I encourage those of you that were not able
to participate at Table Mesa to lend a hand at Sycamore Creek. Here is
a chance to make it up and help keep the world spinning in balance. :>)

Importance: High

Folks,

Mike and Jim are very correct. We only have 11 members signed up as a
definite. We need to get some more to join the clean up at Sycamore
Creek
area. How about it? There isn't another cleanup scheduled for a while.
Let's see if we can get at least 50.

There are some important land issues being discussed and decided on
these
days, and when we (the OHV community) show our involvement like we did
at
Table Mesa, the agencies take us more seriously and count us a credible
user
and resource group. That is why they are starting to listen to us, and
hopefully act in our favor.

It is imperative to have a strong showing at Sycamore. Just
volunteering
for a few hours this Saturday will go a long way!

Thanks,

Nasser

I would like to reiterate how important this one is, please find some
time
to show up for this clean-up. It is very important to the continued use
of
this area.
