Edward Timmsen said: "After seeing the better pic. looks more like water pump or pulley problem".

I got a lot of ideas, and flak about the hole or slice in my timing chain cover. If you look at the pictures it's easy to see. (Although I didn't at first.) Mr. Timmsen said the magic words. WATER PUMP. I went out and put the pulley for the water pump/fan back on the 4 bolts and WA-LA! Man there's not much clearance and if you water pump bearing goes bad like mine did last summer, the pulley can easily get into the cover. Mine started making noise on the way to work one morning and I drove it the last half mile to the shop rather than leave it on the side of the road. Although the belt stayed on there must have been enough "wobble" in the bearing to slice the aluminum cover. It really didn't leak oil that was noticeable except when the Jeep was in an extreme nose down position.
Lesson learned: when the water pump bearing goes, be sure and check that cover.
I changed the pump in the shop parking lot under very trying conditions. At least that's my excuse for missing the hole.

Your absolutely right Scott! I had a pump go bad last summer and I'm sure now that's what did it. I can't figure out how I missed it when I changed the pump though...........

Bill,

I went out and looked at mine and took these pictures in the area of your cut. Right in front of the cover that is cut is a pulley. I have used a yellow marking crayon to outline it. Look closely at the arc of the line I drew. It matches yours nicely. I couldn't get any distance shots of this since its tight with all the stuff installed in front of there. In my opinion that pulley is making contact with the timing cover causing the circular cut you see. As you can see in my pictures the clearance between the cover and the pulley is tight to begin with. Just the slightest amount of slop could cause this. Since this pulley is bolted to the waterpump shaft I'd pull the water pump and check it for any sloppiness in the shaft.

Hope this helps.

Queen Creek and Warner!? Are you sure? They both run east-west. The
Uncle Bears I ate at last night was at Cooper and Warner but I didn't
see anyone anywhere around that intersection. Really would like to

You might consider Kong's Off-Road also for the installation. They did the Rusty's on my Cherokee along with other services (ARB, Detroit, new gears) and I am EXTREMELY please with everything they have done. Talk to Flexy there.

Oh yeah, they claim is it a bolt on unit. That is, it will bolt on in
a couple of hours. Maybe you could take it off when you needed to go
through emissions.
Also, they make one for a 2.5L.

cleaning up and several additional shooters that showed later and left their
names and contacts so they can help in future clean ups. They were as upset
with their fellow "shooters" as we are with our own "wildcaters"........
The picture is changing.

Jim is correct re the agencies will pursue "what to do with this area" but
they also know they cannot do anything without OUR help............. hang
in there, things are changing for the good. Maybe not quickly, but it is
getting better.

Another GOOD happening of the day was I had several ASA4WDC members make
statements regarding "we must find a way to allow AZVJC to join in with
ASA4WDC"....... "we must all join together".......... etc.. Hopefully
2003 will see some changes.

THANKS to all........... I'm very proud to say to the ASA4WDC "I'm a member
of AZVJC". Sandee

I have a cousin in town who would love to go wheeling, but with his
morning activities (golf) we would not be able to leave until 1:00p -
2:00p so I want to just do a quick run of Lower Raw Deal so we can
come back for the super bowl festivites. Our second Jeep for this
has been called into work and cannot go so I am looking for another
to fill in. Just looking for at least one other Jeep to make the
quick trip.

Thanks in advance. Please call me as I won't be checking my email
again...623-975-6072 Home (be here most of the morning)...623-340-
0885 Cell (Doesn't work near my house, be on this closer to noon).

Wherever he ends up I hope he lets us know. I am going to need an alignment in the next month.
