great run

3 rock buggies
scott-on foot
this highway ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!
the buggies were cool to wheel with- they knew the trail well and they made it look like CAKE. of course they took lines a jeep wouldn't even consider. no winch was used. we took all it dished out. body damage on the jeeps? YEP.
NO rock stacking was practiced and we picked up any trash which was minimal.
jason grenaded his front right u-joint- trail fix time 1/2 hr. one of the buggies changed out a front driveshaft u-joint- 1/2 hr. total time on trail- 5.5 hrs. total length about 1.4 miles.
several ledges and waterfalls. also several tight squeezes and lots of LARGE rocks. the trail really doesn't have any pauses in the action and no bypasses.
rock on

Well you better put the screw driver back be for it leaks all your fluid out. J Seriously it looks a bit more like something cut that. Maybe the last garage you didn’t pay, sabotage, or aliens. Was there an event shortly before you noticed the leak? A belt coming off, a cat in the engine, strange lights in the sky? In any case you found the problem you know the fix it is just a bummer you don’t know what caused it. Maybe the fix and putting it together again might lead to a culprit.
Or maybe not.

Subject: [TR] Martinez Canyon - Saturday, January 25, 2003
Hello All,
Walter Brown is leading a Martinez Canyon trail run on Saturday, January 25, 2003.
When: 10:30am
Where: Matinez Cabin
Rating: 4.0+
Length: 6 hours
CB Channel:
Martinez Canyon has to be one of the most beautiful canyons south of the Sedona AZ red bluffs. To reach the trailhead you travel over rolling hills of desert cactus, shrubs and trees. All of a sudden you enter a narrow passageway into a canyon of deep red bluffs and cottonwood trees.
Most of the year there is a spring that winds through the trees and low area. You will find the old homestead at the grouping of cottonwood trees along with some old mining generators and storerooms. Just past the homestead you will drop into the wash and follow it to the old mill.
The road winds back and forth across the wash as well as follows the wash for a time but the trail stays in the wash. You can spend hours "playing" on the rocks and waterfalls.
A mile or so into the wash you will approach a large landslide blocking the wash so the trail starts up the switchback trail "to the top of the world". The view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking.
As you start back down the switchback trail you will find it has been washed out, big time! The washout cuts through several of the "switchbacks" in a cut approximately 8 feet deep and 8 foot wide, so down you go. After a drop into the washout you will crank a hard left turn and literally freeslide on the loose gravel/dirt about 200 yards.
The first comment made from one of the original founders is the best description to the end of a great day of wheeling. "This is better than an 'E' Ticket ride at Disneyland! It's wheel'n the luge!"
This trail is definitely for the "extreme" vehicle as well as an experienced driver. Lockers are required and 33" tires and maximum clearance are a must.
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!
NOTE: 2/17/02 - I (Stu Olson) ran the trail yesterday and I believe it is safe to say that there is not much of a chance to "run the luge" anymore. I could be mistaken, but few (any?) would survive the drop into the luge. It is extrememly erroded now and the old bypass is now the main path down, IMO.

I too wanted to pass along a BIG round of thanks to all of the VJCers (and the rest of the OHV folks from other clubs) that set aside a few hours today to help out. John from Hunter Off-road even managed to sneak out and help clean up the hillside for a while before he had to go to the shop and start welding (he told me the boss was a real jerk!).
The first hill/dump site was the worst I had ever seen. It was obvious that some illegal dumping had gone on.
I saw on another message that the land management folks are going to see if they can figure out how to get a handle on this issue. I wish them all the success in their efforts. I for one would be willing to help in what ever way I can.
Thanks again&..

James,
Stu is exactly 1.5" wider up front and its no big deal. Looks fine. Once
I saw that I was convinced that the stronger Dutchman alloy shafts were
a better way to go. Factoring the sale of the 4 8.8 shafts the out of
pocket price is about the same, $135-160.
Most adapter companies won't make adapters to go from 5 lug to 6 lug.
They will only do 5 to 5, etc. There is one company that would but they
are really thick and I did not like them. Here is a pic of this style
but in a different lug pattern.

Scott,
Why not just install adapters on the 8.8? That would bring the 8.8
width out to where the D44 is and make the lug pattern match. If you
were to get some high quality adapters there shouldn't be any problem
with them breaking.

I'd like to thank everyone that showed up for the Jeep Show on Friday night.

Thanks Joey.
It was great seeing you all, and meeting some new faces. I for one had a

I took some pictures, but the lighting was not good enough and they turned

Hi Scott,
Sorry you missed it. The location was, northeast corner of McQueen and
Warner.
The event was posted on the AZVJC home page, and when I sent the reminder to
the group I had a link to it as well. Apparently the link did not work!
But the event was detailed on the home page.
I'll post another get together in a couple of months. Hope you can make it,

Come on over and join the ArizonaXj list.. Were full of great info..
Just click the link in my signature and sign up on the home page..
To answer your question. You can use blocks and you can use a short add a
leaf and you can use a long add a leaf. you can also replace the leafs with
a lifted spring pack.. I use a long add a leaf and a degreed lift block as
well as a stock leaf pack with an S10 second leaf added to the pack.. My
suggestion since you have a 97 is save for a slip yoke eliminator first then
start with the lifting.. 95 and up XJ's are notorious for having serious
vibrations with any lift over stock.
I hope this helps..
Take care

Bill,
I went out and looked at mine and took these pictures in the area of your cut. Right in front of the cover that is cut is a pulley. I have used a yellow marking crayon to outline it. Look closely at the arc of the line I drew. It matches yours nicely. I couldn't get any distance shots of this since its tight with all the stuff installed in front of there. In my opinion that pulley is making contact with the timing cover causing the circular cut you see. As you can see in my pictures the clearance between the cover and the pulley is tight to begin with. Just the slightest amount of slop could cause this. Since this pulley is bolted to the waterpump shaft I'd pull the water pump and check it for any sloppiness in the shaft.
Hope this helps.

Somebody somewhere just might make one that is thinner. I just felt that if most of the adapter companies don't want to make it then there is good reason to believe that even if it exists somewhere I don't want one.

Hello All,
Walter Brown is leading a Martinez Canyon trail run on Saturday, January 25, 2003.

Thanks Joey.
It was great seeing you all, and meeting some new faces. I for one had a
great time. We had a great showing, and the visiting folks enjoyed gawking

I took some pictures, but the lighting was not good enough and they turned

get better pictures (and get a better photographer).

I have never looked into it, but I was under the impression that AA made an adaptor that would change the lug pattern. I guess I know better now.

James,
Stu is exactly 1.5" wider up front and its no big deal. Looks fine.
