Scott,

Good question.

I have a 9000 lbs winch, a pair of snatch blocks, and four D-rings. A
Pull-Pal, a 30 foot by 3 inch strap with sewn-loop ends. Also a full-size
spade, a full-size cross-cut saw, and an axe/sledge combo. And a HiLift
jack. I also have 150' of 3/8" static-line. While not carried for vehicle
recovery, I'd use it if I had to and then retire it.

Soon to be added is a pair of bridging ladders
http://www.britishpacific.com/offroad/bridging_ladder.htm and a Tirfor
Machine
http://www.tractel.com/Products/Lift&MaterialsHandling/Hoists/Tirfor/tirfor_
more.htm

And I have a vehicle mounted SATCOM.

While the above may seem like overkill, I regularly travel
(non-recreationally) to the boonies as a single vehicle.

Hi Brad,

There is absolutely no doubt that the Rubicon Edition is the right way to go
if you have the cash... building a sport with the exact same setup that the
Rubicon comes with WILL cost you more money (if you don't do the work
yourself) and MAY cost you more money (even if you do).

If the Rubicon Edition was out in 1998, I would have purchased one and then
started building up from there. As nice as the Rubicon Edition is; it
suffers greatly from a lack of clearance that begs for a lift kit. Throw a
lift and some bigger tires on the Rubicon and straight off the showroom
floor you have an absolutely incredible offroad machine.

You did the right thing in purchasing the Rubicon...

Subject: [az_vjc] Re: Rubicon VS H2

Hello;

With all the comments about the Rubicon being very unimpressive for the
price, you guys have got me wondering if I'm missing something. I bought a
Rubicon based on the fact that it would have cost me more to buy a Sport or
Sahara and then add the parts I wanted that the Rubicon already had.

These would be:
Dana 44 front (and rear) differential
4.11 gears
Front and rear lockers
4:1 transfer case (67:1 crawl ratio)
No slip yokes in transfer case
Rear disc brakes
Sill protectors (contrary to what one person said they are steel, not
aluminum, but a bit thin. Time will tell if they are up to the job).
And a couple of other things that I can't think of right now...

If I did my research and math correctly it would have cost around $10,000
to add these items to a Sport or Sahara, making them more expensive than
the Rubicon. The Rubicon seemed to me like a good starting point to build
a capable rig. With the Rubicon all I have to do is raise the transfer
case for a flat skid plate, add suspension lift, and larger tires to make
it fairly trail ready. Is this correct?

As an added bonus the rear differential is limited slip when not locked.
The lockers work on only 5PSI of air pressure which should make a trail
repair of a blown air line pretty easy. Heck, even duct tape should work
for a temporary repair. Their are two small air pumps mounted on the skid
plate just behind the transfer case. If the one for the rear gives up I
could plug that air line into the pump for the front giving me rear lock,
open front. Or I could use a tee fitting to lock both ends with one pump.

Well, it's too late to change my mind now but I'm still curious...

Have a good day
Brad

We just got home from the clean up. Nice turn out! All the dumpsters
are full and there lots more stuff that wouldn't even fit. Many of
us worked on the shooting gallery up towards the water tank, on the
left just past the cattle guard.

God that place was an awful mess. It was quite clean when we left,
but I'm sad to say that after running a trail, coming out we saw
shooters in the very spots we had just cleaned. We stopped to ask
them to pick up after themselves, and they got angry and
said "Waaah! we don't have anything to shoot at anymore"
Well, Mary snapped and gave them an earful. I hope the message got
across that they need to clean up their mess.

Does anyone know the laws regarding target shooting and littering?
Can shooters be cited for leaving their crap behind?
Should we take tag numbers and report the f***ers to the
authorities?
Should we create a "4-wheeler posse" or something?
Would the BLM sanction such a thing?

Thanks to all who helped.

For anyone interested, there were approximately 290 or so names that signed up at the Cleanup table. I don't know how may of these were from the AZVJC, but maybe we will get a number later on. I think we made a good showing though, and there were approximately 3 large dumpsters filled at the end of the day, as well as a pile of larger items waiting for pickup.

Going forward, one of the biggest problems is that many of the offending people are not very friendly, are often hostile, are often drinking and are are usually packing guns. Not a very good person or group to confront alone or in a posse. <grin>

Law enforcement, would love to cite someone for littering, but they simply do not have the man power to police the situation effectively. If they do catch someone dumping or littering, they will cite the individual(s). This is difficult at best.

We made an impression today on all, the community, the shooters, BLM and Law Enforcement. Shortly before leaving the area this afternoon, we talked to a DPS Officer who came into the area. He had great praise for the effort.

I think everybody envolved deserves a pat on the back.

My two cents.

Brad

I tried to go to this last night but couldn't find it. Never saw a
location so I just went by the comment about it being across from
Uncle Bear's. The only UB's I found was at Cooper and Warner. I drove
all around that area last night just before 7pm and didn't see
anything resembling a group of people looking at cars. Ended up just
eating at UB's around 7:30. Didn't see anyone or any Jeeps that I
recognized but at least the food was great. So where was this thing
anyways???

I'm planning to head up to the Scottsdale Pavillions tonight around
5:30 or 6 if anyone's going to be there. Look for a white TJ with a
white soft top and 35s.

James,

Stu is exactly 1.5" wider up front and its no big deal. Looks fine. Once
I saw that I was convinced that the stronger Dutchman alloy shafts were
a better way to go. Factoring the sale of the 4 8.8 shafts the out of
pocket price is about the same, $135-160.

Most adapter companies won't make adapters to go from 5 lug to 6 lug.
They will only do 5 to 5, etc. There is one company that would but they
are really thick and I did not like them. Here is a pic of this style
but in a different lug pattern.

Scott,

Why not just install adapters on the 8.8? That would bring the 8.8
width out to where the D44 is and make the lug pattern match. If you
were to get some high quality adapters there shouldn't be any problem
with them breaking.

Well you better put the screw driver back be for it leaks all your fluid out. J Seriously it looks a bit more like something cut that. Maybe the last garage you didnt pay, sabotage, or aliens. Was there an event shortly before you noticed the leak? A belt coming off, a cat in the engine, strange lights in the sky? In any case you found the problem you know the fix it is just a bummer you dont know what caused it. Maybe the fix and putting it together again might lead to a culprit.

Or maybe not.

Clean it up and put some JB Weld on it. I know a guy that had a crack
in the block of his diesel and ran with JB Weld on it for over 50,000
miles without problems.
