Is is not doing something?

For carbs, generally there are a few adjustments that you want to make and check from time to time. NOTE, I am not sure of the exact requirements of your Carter, so I will give you some generally guidelines:

1) Carb float level. Some carbs have a float window which is sealed with a large screw. Remove the screw and see if gas comes out the hole. If so and its not just pouring, you are in good shape. If not then you need to adjust the float. Some carbs have an external float adj and some internal. If you have external float adj its easy. With the 'window' open turn the float screw on top until gas begins to come out or gas just barely comes out. If you do not have a window then see below.

If the float is adjusted from inside the carb, then you will need to remove the top of the carb to get at it. There should be a line or indentation inside the carb for the proper float level. The float will either have a adj screw or you will just bend a small tab to adjust the level...no its not very accurate.

2) Generally there are 2 fuel circuits, idle and high speed.

Idle. With the engine idling screw in the idle adjustment screw in any direction, slowly until the engine stumbles. NOTE the direction of your screwdriver. Now turn in the opposite direction until the engine stumbles again. Count the turns. Now divide by 2 and split the difference on the rich side. Most often counter clockwise is rich and clockwise is lean. You want halfway to the rich side of half way between rich stumble and lean stumble.

Now adjust the idle screw (which controls the butterfly valve in the carb to idle at the correct RPM. The will be on the linkage, whereas the other adjustments will be in the carb body.

High speed: Rev the engine up around 1500 - 2k rpm and adjust as you did for the idle circuit. As you did, adjust to the rich side.

3) Get someone to sit in the drivers seat and put the accelerator to the floor. LOOK into the carb to see if the butterfly is wide open, adjust linkage to insure that it is.

4) You may or may not have a auto choke. If its manual then no problem, but if its auto then when its hot you should not need any choke to rev the engine. If its cold then you will want the choke to kick up some added RPMs for faster warm up.

For most single throat or 2 barrel carbs that is all there is.

Let me know if this helps...

How is revving the motor between 1500-2000rpm checking the high speed fueling? Also, adjust what "as you did for the idle circuit"? The idle screw? The only way to adjust for WOT(high speed) is the main jet and the needle position. The driveability fueling is adjusted by the needle once the main jet is sorted out.

..

While doing this part, make sure the engine is off. (It is kinda common sense ,but you never know.)

As I stated, this was general guidance and NOT specific to his/Carter 2 barrel.

That said:
1) Revving the motor to about 1500 RPM will increase the velocity of the incoming air and start the high speed circuit

2) Using the high speed jet screw, I think I said there were 2 circuits and you adjust them the same by turning the screw in and out.

3) ?????????

The world of carbs ranges from simple to extremely complex. Each manufacturer has difference ways to achieve the same results. Some are quite simple and straight forward like the Holley carbs. Carter one of the very old companies in the world of carbs has many ways to skin their cats.

On the ranch we had it all from carbs on the Ford tractors, ranch trucks and our own cars and Holley, Carter, Ford and many other brands were will represented. Any one who believes there is only one way to sort out the end game is but fooling themselves.

Point being I did not write the definitive tome on carb adjustments but rather tried to present some basic knowledge that might let the user begin to sort out their issues.

To the original poster, I will be glad to help you sort out your carb issues, just let me know.

trash that thing go to a junkyard and pull a motorcraft 2100 2 barrel. They came on old wagoneers and all kinds of fords. pick up the adapter from mr. gasket. rebuild it or have someone rebuild it put it on and begin to enjoy driving your jeep again. that carter is nothing but problems. Plus the 2100 is Awesome offroad

I think the BBD actually has an adjustable metering rod. If so, make sure the BIG end of the rod is going thru the jet unless you really gun it...If its bobbing around or staying up youll run really rich.
