OK here is my situation. I have a 72 scout w/ an AMC 258. It has a t90-aa
and a dana 20. They both are blown. I need s solid drivetrain for it to be
my DD again. Any suggestions? I rebuilt this (rare) tranny once for ~$600
and it will need all the same parts plus maybe more plus the cost to rebuild
the dana 20. The cost for this should be about the same as swapping in a
granny 4 speed. I am thinking maybe a t-18 or something to help its piss
poor crawl and maybe stick w/ the dana 20 and leave room to upgrade to a
dana 300 in the future? not sure. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am
thinking tranny adapters and transfer (either rebuild mine or get another)
for about a grand bellhousing tranny and adapters. Is this out of line?
Thanks for any help.

Subject: Re: Rubicon VS H2

Hello;

With all the comments about the Rubicon being very unimpressive for the
price, you guys have got me wondering if I'm missing something. I bought a
Rubicon based on the fact that it would have cost me more to buy a Sport or
Sahara and then add the parts I wanted that the Rubicon already had.

These would be:
Dana 44 front (and rear) differential
4.11 gears
Front and rear lockers
4:1 transfer case (67:1 crawl ratio)
No slip yokes in transfer case
Rear disc brakes
Sill protectors (contrary to what one person said they are steel, not
aluminum, but a bit thin. Time will tell if they are up to the job).
And a couple of other things that I can't think of right now...

If I did my research and math correctly it would have cost around $10,000
to add these items to a Sport or Sahara, making them more expensive than
the Rubicon. The Rubicon seemed to me like a good starting point to build
a capable rig. With the Rubicon all I have to do is raise the transfer
case for a flat skid plate, add suspension lift, and larger tires to make
it fairly trail ready. Is this correct?

As an added bonus the rear differential is limited slip when not locked.
The lockers work on only 5PSI of air pressure which should make a trail
repair of a blown air line pretty easy. Heck, even duct tape should work
for a temporary repair. Their are two small air pumps mounted on the skid
plate just behind the transfer case. If the one for the rear gives up I
could plug that air line into the pump for the front giving me rear lock,
open front. Or I could use a tee fitting to lock both ends with one pump.

Well, it's too late to change my mind now but I'm still curious...

Have a good day
Brad

I tried to go to this last night but couldn't find it. Never saw a
location so I just went by the comment about it being across from
Uncle Bear's. The only UB's I found was at Cooper and Warner. I drove
all around that area last night just before 7pm and didn't see
anything resembling a group of people looking at cars. Ended up just
eating at UB's around 7:30. Didn't see anyone or any Jeeps that I
recognized but at least the food was great. So where was this thing
anyways???

I'm planning to head up to the Scottsdale Pavillions tonight around
5:30 or 6 if anyone's going to be there. Look for a white TJ with a
white soft top and 35s.

Scott,

Why not just install adapters on the 8.8? That would bring the 8.8
width out to where the D44 is and make the lug pattern match. If you
were to get some high quality adapters there shouldn't be any problem
with them breaking.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and ideas. It turned out
to be really simple: the electrical connections at the fuel tank for
the pump. Loose. I have no idea how they got loose, unless it was
old age. Us oldtimers know how that can be!
Of course I got out the tools and checked everything from the
MAP sensor, EGR, all the vacuum lines, most of the electrical lines
that run to/from the throttle body... The easy fix is always the
last one you'd think of to try. After I played with the tank
connections it fired right up like a new truck!
