I found my oil leak. I thought it was the front seal. Not sure how this can happen.
I think it happened when I busted the transmission mount. Not sure what can do this???

That's a head scratcher. I can't imagine a tranny mount failure causing that crack up front. That's the timing chain cover...no?? Too much slack in the timing chain hitting the case??

Clean it up well and use some JB weld? I know that sounds kind of hokey, but I dont see that as having much structural support for the engine.

Bill,

Judging from the shape of the fracture; Id say that the impact that caused the fracture you are looking at came from INSIDE the timing chain cover and not outside.

Id recommend that you remove the cover and look inside& I suspect you will find the culprit in there& perhaps excessive chain slap hitting the case or perhaps something has separated, broken, or otherwise come loose.

While you are in there& replace the timing chain, replace the cover, change your oil and filter, and then change it again after a couple of thousand miles to get rid of any remnant particles caused by your failure. You may want to drop the oil pan and clean out the sump filter and pan if debris inside the timing chain cover is bad enough.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

1) 1.250 OD x 0.812 ID DOM for the tie rod (tap directly into 0.812" ID)
-any tube with the 0.812" ID will work

2) 1.5" .120 DOM for sleeving (optional)

3) Tie rod tube should be about 38"for stock early Bronco knuckles (39.5"
for 76-77 disk knuckles) and drag link should be about 25" for high
misalignment ends and 27" if using the tie
rod ends for the drag link). If using the F150 box and the high misalignment
ends, then the drag link tube length should be 18.75".

Thanks DougB, Stu and Joe W.
What ever it was caused it was done from the outside. The scratch is a crescent with the opening at the top. The scratch is 4 or 5" long, but only went through the case about a 1/2" at the bottom.(see screw driver).
I plan on taking it off, along with the oil pan and checking everything, meanwhile replacing chain, seal etc. If I can't get the part by Monday, I do what Stu said and JB weld it.
What bothers me is I know it's been leaking for a couple of months. None of the pulleys line up with this damage and like I say the damage was caused externally.
If I learn anything tomorrow when I pull her apart I let you know.
P.S. My friends on here gave me good answers and suggestions. THANKS!

Just finished a 5.5 lift and a major belly tuck on a 2003 with auto.
I have to say for the money they get for these suckers they are not impressive at all. There is no clearance underneath in stock form. You can move the transfercase up almost 4".
This guy say the hell with the warranty and lifted it and tucked the belly to go wheeling. Looks good know though. I will admit that they do drive real nice.

no no no.... that screwdriver is standard issue. it is for adjusting the CPU heat sensativity in the timing chain disposition. If you were to take that out the modem driver would screw with the tensioner and the RAM would then over heat and he would at that point have some serious hard drive issues along with not being able to check his email... only adjust that screwdriver when he is having problems with cox high speed internet service and only do so when the service tech instructs ya to.

Anyone have any suggestions? Here are the symptoms:

It was running great and had not given me any signs that it was
getting ill. I parked it, and when I jumped in to start it, it would
not. Acted like it was out of gas. It's not. Fuel filter is in the
tank. Distributorless ignition. It will crank and fire, but will
not run for more than a second. I let it sit and tried it again, and
it started and ran as long as I kept my foot on the gas. Ran rough,
acting like a clogged filter, and after a minute it ran smoothe and
idled on it's own. I let it run for a few minutes, and then **** it
down. It started right up and promptly died. Would not start after
that. Acted like it's flooded, maybe, but it doesn't seem to be...

I'll take any/all suggestions on what to look for next. Guess I
won't be at the cleanup unless I get it fixed early tomorrow.

Subject: Interesting axle width numbers. Your help appreciated

Got the Waggy 44. Here is some interesting numbers I thought I'd throw your way. I'd like to compile a database of these and post them to the website for future reference.
These numbers are wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface.

61.50" TJ D30 axle with the Warn small 5 on 4.5" hub kit.
60.00" TJ stock axle width front and rear
60.75" Waggy 44 axle width
59.25" Ford 8.8

Stu runs the small hub kit. His front is now 1.5" wider than the rear 44. The Waggy 44 will be 1.5" wider than the 8.8 so you can't do much better than that for junkyard swaps :D I've been told that being slightly wider up front allows the rear to track better on the trail and street

I'm going to get this thing under there and then the next step will be Warn alloys and CTM's. I am going to go ahead and install Dutchman alloys in the matching 6 on 5.5" pattern into the 8.8. Should be a pretty stout setup for 37's.

Later,

Scott K
