I plan on running something. I don't think I could bring myself to
go out to Table Mesa and not do any wheeling. That's kinda like
going to a Mexican food restaurant and ordering a hamburger. It's
just wrong.
I was thinking about leading a Judgement Day run. If anyone's
interested in this, let me know. I'd also be happy hooking up with
others to do a different run if there's one already planned.

Matt,
I'm running a 4" Teraflex, and 33" tires and get some rubbing at full
articulation. I plan to go to 35" tires after a 1" body lift. I think in
your scenario below you would get significant rub. Also, in some jeeps you
will get driveline vibration and may need to drop the t-case skid.
As always, your mileage may vary.....

Rusty's 3" lift, 1" body lift.
the goal would be to fit 35" tires and get good articulation. I don't
do much off-roading now but would like to be able to do it more
often. I'm not looking to tackle any major trails just doing some fun
backcountry camping and playing.
What are some of the things I should watch out for with a setup like
this? Also am I going to have odd drive shaft angles etc.

I've got 2" lift, 1" Body lift, 1" Motor Mount Spacers, 33x12.50
MT/R's. I get some pretty good rubbing with running stock springs and
control arms. I would assume that the extra inch of lift and the
extra 2" of tire would cancel out and you'd get as much rubbing as I
do (flares only, no sheet metal). I would guess your problem would be
that the Rusty's kit is bound to flex better than my stock set up so
I'd bet rubbing would be worse. I'd save some coin and go with 33's
and flex the beejeezus out of them or get a bigger lift. At that
point you have to ask yourself if the extra 1" of ground clearance is
worth the extra funds.
Hope this helps

so it sounds like 35's would be pushing it without a bigger lift...
which would be lots of extra cash to do correctly.
What is the deal with spring spacers? Are they safe?
Also the motor mount spacers... does that drop the motor 1"? is that
a decent way to keep the driveline angle as stock as possible or are
there better ways to do it.

Last year, I think we were done around noon. This year, there are
many more AZVJC folks signed up. So even if the attendance of
non-AZVJC folks remains the same as last year, the clean-up should
go faster than last year. Therefore, I'm sort of planning on meeting

Benefits of Spring Spacers
1. Ease of install
2. Same suspension components so ride is nearly the same as stock.
3. Cheap (mine was $115. it consisted of spacers and Bar pin
eliminators which allow you to reuse stock shock although I didn't)
4. No drilling for track bar etc.
5. No Vibes
Detriments of Spring Spacers
1. Limited to 2"
2. In theory will transfer some bumps to the cab because of the new
control arm angle (that why I bought better shocks
3. Maybe others but I've not experienced them.
4. Need alignment (all lifts)
As for the motor mount lift. It raises the engine 1 inch. Opinions
vary as to whether this eliminates vibes or not (Stu's site has an
excellent review as to how MM do not or only slightly help with
Driveline vibes).
I didn't have any vibes to begin with so I cannot weigh in on the
issue. I bought and installed the MM lift with the Body Lift so as to
keep everything in stock configuration and not have to install T-case
linkage and relocate the fan shroud. Both the linkage and the fan
relocation are easily done but so is the MM lift.
I'd do it this way again given the choice as this leaves lots of cash
for much needed armor, keeps the CG low, and gets me where I wanna go
(so far)
As far as safety, I've never had nor heard of any issues.
Hope this Helps

Great information thank you!.
So from what I'm gathering from private e-mails and group replys is
that with the rusty 3" lift, 1" body lift, and probably the rusty's
1.75" spring spacers I could get 35's with some minor rubbing. Either
that or I go with 33s and get some good articulation. Vibration is
either hit or miss so I'd have to wait to see. If I did get vibration
how do I go about reducing it?
Also what kind of stress is this going to place on the transmission
etc spinning bigger (and heavier tires).
also anyone know how the stock TJ wheels compare weight wise to the
AR 767 that are so popular?
Thanks again you guys are a big help. I was under the impression in
order to lift you had to spend tons of money. but it looks like if
your willing to do some work yourself and match different parts up
you can do it fairly cheaply. I just want to be sure to do it safely.

P.S. I realize its looking more and more like 35s would require at
least a 6" lift with body spacers.
I'm not hung up on 35s. Most of my questions apply to either 33 or

Unless you're planning to regear your axles, 33" tires would be more
tolerable than 35" tires - especially on the freeway and going up

Subject: Re: oil pan
Don't know what engine you have but I've changed the rear main seal
in my '93 4.0 and it wasn't difficult. Here's a quick list of the
steps as I can remember them:
1 - drain the oil
2 - take out about 2 dozen bolts/nuts and remove the oil pan
3 - pull off the old gasket
4 - remove the rear-most crank bearing cap (2 bolts) and
loosen the next 2 or 3
5 - pull the lower half of the seal out of the bearing cap
you removed
6 - fish the upper half of the seal out of the engine block
7 - install new seal halves (1 on cap, 1 in engine block)
8 - reverse the steps 1-4 above
If you don't have some lift, I imagine removing the oil pan
might actually be a challenge. It wasn't for me. Also, replacing
the upper seal half is a little tedious but not too difficult.
And you probably should put in a new oil pan gasket.
As for the front seal, I've never done that.

KIA is not a bad manufacturer. In fact, they make some pretty
decent vehicles. Remember when a Honda was the cheapest piece of
****e you could find on the road? (I do.) KIA never made a cheap
car, but they do make some very inexpensive cars. The fact that they
make one with a two-speed transfer case that did pretty well in the
4x4 of the Year comparison (the actual 'wheelin part) that is
actually affordable and well-made should earn it some well-deserved
respect. Jeep Jeep Jeep. Don't you guys ever get tired of eating
the same thing for lunch? I will always own my Jeep, and love it and
all Jeeps. There are other vehicles out there that are very good at
some of the things that Jeeps are good at. Not *as* good, but
close. And if a Jeep driver just happens to get the Jeep stuck
(won't mention driver's ability) who cares who pulls it out? Maybe
DC should start charging extra for the God Complex that comes with
owning a Jeep!

I plan on running something. I don't think I could bring myself to

What are some of the things I should watch out for with a setup like

Also the motor mount spacers... does that drop the motor 1"? is that
a decent way to keep the driveline angle as stock as possible or are
there better ways to do it.

go faster than last year.

Unless you're planning to regear your axles, 33" tires would be more
tolerable than 35" tires - especially on the freeway and going up
hills.

Maybe
DC should start charging extra for the God Complex that comes with
owning a Jeep!

along with the dirt bike, axles, tranny, seats, and whatever else I said in last email I also have a quadrojet carb that doesn't pass emmisions but runs fine for $25. I also have a serpintine belt idler pulley that will probably fit alot of things but came off a yj. it is the ribbed side. You can have it for free or a donation of beer would be nice!!! I have a distributer for a 258 that i'll take a 12 pack of corona beers for. I still have so much more **** around here that there will probably be another add on here!!!

I plan on running something. I don't think I could bring myself to
go out to Table Mesa and not do any wheeling.
I was thinking about leading a Judgement Day run. If anyone's
interested in this, let me know. I'd also be happy hooking up with
others to do a different run if there's one already planned.
