I too had the same deal happen except I had a flat on the XJ and busted out
the spare (donut) and wouldn't you believe it, it was flat as can be. Low
and behold, I called my wife and she brought her full size spare and it fit
my XJ. And it was a Honda CRV :o) Go figure. Same lug pattern. That was
right after I bought the XJ (2 days) and never again will I let a "Honda"
help me :o) Be prepared!! I just couldn't figure why anyone would have a
donut in an XJ and a full size on a CRV. Like I said before...Go
figure......

I thought I'd post since this is an "automotive" group...
I was checking my tires on the old sedan, (all 4 were a little low)
Then I decided to check the donut spare in the trunk. Wouldn't you
know it: 12 lbs! (it should have 60 lbs.) Sure, I keep good tires on
the car, but you never know. If I'd had a flat, I would have been
S.O.L. and pretty emarassed, too.
If you have a wife/GF/SO or family car, check that spare- It would
really suck for it to be too flat to use when you really need it.
Have a nice day :)

96 XJ, did a motor mount swap a month ago and took about 1/2 hr. Never done
a head gasket job so don't know whats involved. I've replaced valve cover
gaskets and thats no prob. But I think heads are a lot more involved and
maybe special tools required. Open this weekend but I have my kids since my
wife is flying to Maryland wednesday night but they won't be a prob. I live
at Mesa Drive and Broadway and have plenty of room. Anyone else want to help
or know whats involved in changing the head gasket? I know the cleanup is
going on Saturday so getting help might be a prob.

past. it is pretty easy. just pull the head and don't mess up the order of
the bolts as they come off (masking tape and a pen work great to label
them.) then pull the head up and away and remove the gasket. it will be a
metal gasket so you shouldn't have to scrap a felt gasket off. there may be
some rtv @ the water ports though... scrape that off. then.... you need to
take a straight ruler and put it up against the head to check for warpage.
if there is alot... then it needs to be milled. any machine shop
specializing in auto parts should be able to help out. if its not warped
then put the metal gasket on the block and then the head over it. get on the
internet first and find out the torque specs (ftlbs, and torque sequence.)
and tighten her up. should be easy as that.

but if you guys wanted to reschedule for Sunday, I could probably assist

learn. Anyone have the shop manual for that year XJ?

96 XJ, did a motor mount swap a month ago and took about 1/2 hr. Never
done a head gasket job so don't know whats involved. I've replaced valve
cover gaskets and thats no prob. But I think heads are a lot more
involved and maybe special tools required. Open this weekend but I have
my kids since my wife is flying to Maryland wednesday night but they
won't be a prob. I live at Mesa Drive and Broadway and have plenty of

Eh, me thinks "just pull the head" involves a lot more than that
statement implies. You'll have to pull the intake and exhaust
manifolds which also involves disconnecting the throttle cable, fuel
lines, vacuum lines and electrical connections. I'm not saying this
is difficult - just more work than your statement seems to imply.

Unless something has changed, it is not required to remove the manifolds
for a head gasket replacement. Remove the cylinder head and manifolds as
an assembly. Why would you create all that extra work for yourself??

Um.... wrong

Yorks have been used for years in Jeeps for onboard air. I have one as
do many club members. The York is self-oiled. You remove a little plug
on the side and add oil when necessary.

The night before the run I discovered my alternator kicked the bucket.
Thank god for the 24 hour Auto Zone. Anyway, while I was changing it in
the Auto Zone parking lot at 2:00 am, I didn't plug one of the wires in
all the way. On the trail we couldn't see it because the plastic weather
seal was plugged in , but not enough metal was touching. I can't believe
how much effort everyone put into making sure I was okay. Thanks again,
send me your address and I send you a six pack. :)

I cut these my self, I was so scared to try it. I suggest everyone try it
out. I love the look of the 38A1 but I ended up a 74 CJ5, solution,
sandblast the hideous baby blue paint, dechrome, cut the fenders, and
shoot it with the meanest lookin olive drab paint. Respect from the other
Jeep owners sky rocketed. On warm days, I take off the top, doors, and
windshield. I look like a villan from Road Warrior with my flack jacket
and motorcycle goggles, doing 80 on the freeway. Even hardass Harley
riders look away when I stare at them at a stop light.

That's why I use a York with it's own oil sump. Not one issue with it yet.

A auto AC compressor won't last long at all as an onboard air compressor. It has to have a constant oil supply. In an operating ac .. the oil is supplied in vapor form, circulating with the refrigerant. Don't waste your time.... the first time you really need it, it will let you down.

Knowingly ruining something because it has a warranty .... come on now....
