Won't work. This is a "pipe" bender. The kind of tubing you want to bend will just kink and fold over. I took the one I bought back the next day. I tried many different sizes of tubing too.

Ok, I have looked at Harbor Freight and it appears that they have some pretty decent prices on metal bending equipment. The question is... Is it really worth the money and time to fabricate your own equiptment? I think that it would be pretty nice to say "Hey look at what I did!!" like ole Michael did. I am sure he will get all the compliments in the world on a trail run "Hey Mike... nice rack!!!" and he will beam with pride.

So how hard was it really Mike? Was it worth it? I have already started to save the money for the bending equip. What about making bumpers and tire carriers and stuff? What about a new cage? Where the hell do ya get the metal to do this?

Thx!

Sean (just too damn cheap to buy the goods!)

John,

Where did I ever say there should be only modified rigs out on the trails?
I said only modified rigs should be on the trails that are rated for the modified rigs. Not every trail is for a modified rig, in fact there are more trails for the less modified rigs. So why ruin the extreme trails.
When it takes 10 min. to unstack rocks at one obstacle, the person or people that needed that many rocks should not be there period!!!!

From: John Stewart <landuse@ufwda.org>
Subject: Re: Trail blockage, Rock stackers

You are misunderstanding a few points.

1 - I believe vehicles should be prepared for the trail.

2 - I do not believe EVERY trail should be hardcore extreme.

3 - I am not saying "pave" the trails. I am saying that if you
insist on extreme trails and only extreme trails, you will have not
trails.

My opening statement was "If you are saying that the ONLY people on
the trails are the ones that want the extreme trail, you are no
different than the GAG that wants no one but them on foot on the
trail."

That is my point of concern. If you are going to only allow a
certain class of modified rig on the trail, you will have a
diminishing number of people and less of a chance to keep the trails
open.

Any stacking (or unstacking) of rocks is going to lead to problems.
That is the central point around the Little Sluice on the Rubicon.
Somebody felt is was too easy; therefore they took it upon themselves
to make it harder, to keep the unmodified rigs out of their play
area, and dumped some large rocks in the trail..

This is the attitude that I am disagreeing with. In this case, did
someone feel it was too hard and decide to make it easy? So, they
fill in a few holes. Now, Todd goes around to various trails
unstacking rocks. Both actions are going to lead to problems. Just
as making a bypass around a tough spot will lead to problems.

Central to this issue is the act of modifying trail; whether to make
them harder or easier. Both are actions that will draw the attention
of the land manager and lead to environmental considerations for
closing trails. There is specific guidance within the BLM manual
(and the Forest Service manual) dealing with trail construction and
maintenance.

And, yes I do disagree with the attitude that you have the right to
modify a trail because you think it should be harder. I also
disagree with modifying the trail to make it easier. You should be
prepared.

As you are from Arizona, you should be familiar with the Skye Island
Alliance. Check out their Road Ripper Manual. They are making
trails impassible.

Regarding getting the same wheel bolt pattern, that might be good or
bad. It's good if you plan to keep your front axle. It's bad if
you're going to swap out your front axle because none of the front
axles that people normally swap in come with the 5-on-4.5" bolt
pattern. This means you may end up needing to change the bolt
pattern of your rear 8.8 if you want to carry only one spare tire.

Roger,

Most people will never upgrade the front 30. With 297X joints it is
plenty strong for most of the people out there.

If they do swap out the front they can get 5 on 5.5" or 6 on 5.5" shafts
from Moser or Dutchman and they will redrill the rotors to match. Or you
can run Centerline Hellcat wheels which are drilled for both patterns.
I'll probably just convert the rear on mine to whatever the front I swap
in is.

Regarding cost of switching the rear bolt pattern consider this: Is it
cheaper to convert pattern or try to add disk brakes to the 35? It's
pretty much a wash here unless you don't mind the drum brakes.

And of course everybody has their own idea of the perfect rig. For
example, if you hate Fords chances are you'd die before you install a
Ford 8.8 rear. :D

Horshe****! Er... I mean, agreed! ;-)

I wasn't endorsing the Super 35 kit over the 8.8 swap. (Sorry if it
came across that way.) Instead, I was merely trying to point out a
possible issue that a lot of people might not think about until long
after the 8.8 swap was done and it was time for a front axle swap.

Last June I installed 1.75" coil spacers on all four corners of
my ZJ, upgraded to 30x9.5x15 tires and swapped out the speedometer
gear to reflect the proper speed. Being a cheap b…… I left the
stock shocks on.

I felt I needed to gain another inch or two (max), move to 31's
once I wear out my current tires and leave it at that. If I ever
decide to get more extreme I will probably build a trail only rig.

Anyway because I wanted to gain a bit more height on my rig, last
week I got a set of 3" (3.5"?)Rancho springs from another
club member, I purchased a set of Rancho 5000 shocks for a 3"
lift
and installed the rear springs and shocks last Friday. To my
surprise, it sits at the exact same height as before, it does ride a
bit more to my liking, which I attribute to the new shocks but were
is my extra inch?. Is it likely the same will happen with the front
once I install the new springs?

Any suggestions/ideas will be appreciated.

Subject: Slightly OT: got air in that spare?

I thought I'd post since this is an "automotive" group...
I was checking my tires on the old sedan, (all 4 were a little low)
Then I decided to check the donut spare in the trunk. Wouldn't you
know it: 12 lbs! (it should have 60 lbs.) Sure, I keep good tires on
the car, but you never know. If I'd had a flat, I would have been
S.O.L. and pretty emarassed, too.
If you have a wife/GF/SO or family car, check that spare- It would
really suck for it to be too flat to use when you really need it.
Have a nice day :)
