I would suggest going up to Yahoo and doing a search on "Shackle Reversal",
"Spring Over", "Spring Over Conversion" and "SOA". You will end up with
more information than you will know what to do with. Then.........if you
still have questions, come ask the "collective".
A couple of web sites with good info on this:

Those alone will keep you reading for hours.

Pinal County has been trying to push this through for a number of months.
It went through a dozen "revisions" over a 3 month time period. Just prior
to the Board Meeting where they wanted to get buy-in/approval it was pulled
from the table....... Hopefully that still stands. I have written to the
Air Quality Manager about this........... we'll see what her response is.
I'll let you know.
It definitely did not "get by us". I attended each and every meeting and
believe me......... I was HEARD. A number of OHV recreationists attended
all or some of the meetings as well as the Board Meeting. We had already
been told this had been "pulled from the table" but the "writer" of this
proposal was still pushing for it and wanted to ask the Board if "there was
a need for this". Long discussion later............ "NO". It was felt the
statutes in place were sufficient.
GOOD eye Gary................ keep up the good work. Hopefully we are all
becoming vigilant enough that these things WON'T get by us. I wouldn't have
known about it had I not had "a friend" within the Supervisors office. They
like to do these "under the table thing" you know!!!

That's odd. The meeting minutes
http://co.pinal.az.us/BOS/Minutes/2002/dec4_2002.pdf were from December
4th. The Ordinance http://www.ajnews.com/announcements.htm was
originally adopted December 4th.
In any case the ordinance as I read it says nothing more then what we
practice now. Except that you have to drive 5 MPH or slower, to keep the
dust below one foot, when you are a quarter mile from a highway.
Was there something I missed?

Subject: amc V8 help needed quickly
I am on vacation in Michigan with my engine and all the parts I bought for it. I have a few questions that I need help with. I bought roller tip rockers from CompCams and it says I have to use guide plates. I called Comp and they told me to use pontiac ones and grind the heads down so they fit, My machine shop guy wont do that. I called summit and they have a weld on type. He wont weld to cast iron either because he said its not a good welding surface. Has anyone put guide plates on a AMC V-8 and how did you do it? The last question is I need head bolts. ARP doesn't stock by the applacation so I need to find the lenghts and how many of each length. I know they are 1/2 inch coarse thread. Thanks for all the help from the group. The engine should be done by Thursday by the time I leave for my drive back to Tucson. I will be on the trail shortly after a long 2 year down time.

There was more to these ordinances than just "driving 5 MPH"......... for
all intents and purposes, it would have almost eliminated OHV use anywhere
in Pinal County. No washes, no DUST,................ AND the fact that
JUST OHV was blamed for ALL DUST!!!!! Pi**ed me off!
............... I've written to the Air Quality Manager for "official" info
re what happened here but I believe she'll tell me it was officially pulled

LOL,
Yeah I'm not too keen on putting in a fuel cell. I think I'll just swap
in the 44 and leave it stock wheelbase.
I got a crazy idea from watching ZUK on Axle Alley in his Toyota that is
tubed out. I am contemplating finding a Chevy S10 or Blazer that has
been rolled and building a tube machine out of it. I'd want to start
with a 4.3L and 4L60E and then put in my tcase and axles of choice. Of
course most of the body except for the windshield and front clip would
be chopped off in favor of some tubing. I think its better to put my
crazy ideas into a machine like this than to mess with the TJ which is
pretty darn capable as it is. I'd really like to build a machine that I
wouldn't care if I rolled it so I could always push the envelope to the
edge. I hate backing down because I'm afraid to roll or tip. Let me
build some ugly ******* machine for that stuff. I hear Bill Mish is good
at building those kinds of machines ;)

I am thinking about those long rail dragsters, the ones like Big
Daddy Don Garlitz used to run. They have a REALLY long wheelbase,
and they don't seem to have much weight on the front tires. Ever
seen a dragrace?
Move the rear axle back at the same time, and like you already
said, you'll move the weight in front of the rear axle. Do both, and
you'll have the best of both worlds.
Some insurance companies will not insure you if you modify the
fuel tank's location, especially if you put in inside the passenger
compartment. Hope my limited info is helpful.
One more thing... I heard that purple is the hardest color to
achieve front-to-rear weight transfer with.

Scott,
One thing to consider when moving the front axle forward is the
geometry of the steering and trackbar parts. They line up pretty good
right now, but move them forward and things will start hitting other
things. Your RE trackbar will not line up. The Currie steering will hit
the trackbar mounts. New shock mounts will be needed. The antirock
links will be way off, etc....

Scott,
What about cutting the body to eliminate the area from just behind the
doors to where the body curves around in back and then weld it it back
together. Then chop the frame at that point and go tube from there
back. You could then go with any length shock and make a new, higher
mount for the factory fuel tank. Then you could extend the axle back
all you want. You could even install a winch in the back (like a low
profile M8000) for those times when you need a little help or if Joe is
behind you and needs a tug.

John,
I tow my 6,000 LB 5th wheel with a 96 dodge 1500 5.9L and I really don't like it for the hills. I would be more happy with one of the new Hemi's or a V10. I tow a 8500
LB trailer at work with a 2002 Dodge 1 ton V10 and it scoots! I just got it. Before I had a 98 with 117,000 miles and had no trouble with the V10, just the brakes. It went through the brakes quick as I was towing most of the time. GO BIG YOUNG

I am was wondering if anyone here has any expeirence or knows of someone, towing with a newer Dodge 1500 4.7 liter motor. (Yes, I know it is a small motor, but have to work on a tight budget, looking at my options and doing homework) Im looking to tow up to 6000 lbs on occasion and was wondering how it does and looking for real world input...
Thank You Much

I do not have a Dodge but if you are getting something to tow with try a Diesel. My 96 F-250 Power Stroke pulls the trailer and the Jeep easily. The other added bonus is 12 to 14 MPG towing and 17 to 20 in town. Jim F.

Scott,
One thing to consider when moving the front axle forward is the geometry of the steering and trackbar parts. They line up pretty good right now, but move them forward and things will start hitting other things. Your RE trackbar will not line up. The Currie steering will hit the trackbar mounts. New shock mounts will be needed. The antirock links will be way off, etc....

Then I thought that sliding the rear axle back would be better because it would effectively move weight forward. Of course the drawback to that is the need to remove the fuel tank and put in a fuel cell. That would rob me off most of my space in the tub. <>smaller><>fontfamily>

EXTREME ROCK-CRAWLING ACTION COMING TO LUCERNE VALLEY AREA
"The War at Cougar Buttes Area" California Rock-Crawling and Off-Road
Championship Series, Feb. 1st and Feb. 2nd
LUCERNE VALLEY, CA - (Jan. 17, 2003) - Come watch the biggest
names in the sport of rock-crawling and meet the teams you see in the
magazines and on television.
The California Rock-crawling and Off-Road Championship Series
(CalROCS), will host its next extreme rock-crawling event at the
Cougar Buttes area, located near Lucerne Valley, Saturday, Feb. 1 and
Sunday, Feb. 2.
"The championship series draws the top rock-crawling competitors
from throughout the United States," said Rich Klein, promoter of the
CalROCS event. "It is not only exciting for the competition teams,
but it is also extremely exciting for our spectators."
Klein said this event is not a race. The event involves
technical courses for three separate vehicle classifications with a
driver and a spotter working together trying to achieve the lowest
possible score. Points are assessed to driving teams for stopping,
backing up, touching a gate, wandering off the course or for
requiring winching assistance.
Klein said that the Cougar Buttes Area technical courses would
be placed very close together so that spectators can view all of the
action.
The four-wheel drive vehicles used for this type of competition
are not your stock Jeeps or sport utility vehicles you see on the
interstate highways. The vehicles may say Toyota 4-Runner, Ford
Bronco, or Jeep Wrangler; however, they have all been modified and
customized to crawl over the biggest boulders and up the face of a
steep hill.
The public is invited free of charge to meet the competitors and
view their special-built rigs at the Ramada Inn, located at 1511 E.
Main Street in Barstow, on Friday, Jan. 31 from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m.
The spectator gates at the Cougar Buttes Area will open at 8
a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Competition will begin both days at 9
a.m.
Admission fee for adults is $10; $5 for children 8 to 15 years
of age and children under 7 will be admitted free of charge. Food
and beverage vendors will be on site.
To reach the Cougar Buttes Area from Barstow, take Hwy 247 to
North Side Road. Take a left on North Side Road to Harrod Road.
Take a right on Harrod Road and drive 2 miles and turn left on
Granite Road. Follow the signs to the event area.
From Victorville, take Hwy 18 east past Lucerne Valley. Turn
left onto Camp Rock Road and proceed 4 miles to Granite Road. Follow
the signs to the event area.

In any case the ordinance as I read it says nothing more then what we
practice now. Except that you have to drive 5 MPH or slower, to keep the
dust below one foot, when you are a quarter mile from a highway.

LOL,
Yeah I'm not too keen on putting in a fuel cell.

I do not have a Dodge but if you are getting something to tow with try a Diesel. My 96 F-250 Power Stroke pulls the trailer and the Jeep easily. The other added bonus is 12 to 14 MPG towing and 17 to 20 in town. Jim F.
