Hi All
Just joined,I Don't currently own a jeep, but thinking of buying a new one.
I've owned 2 Grand Cherokees in the past, but never really gone off roading.
Thinking of trading in my 04 silverado for a new wrangler. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!

Welcome! You will find a ton of great people and advice here. My advice: Figure out what you can spend on the Jeep (aka: your budget) and then spend thousands less than that on the purchase because you will want to put a ton of money into it to make it "work" better after ;) By the way... I did not follow my own advice! :aagh:

welcome..welcome...i second the "decide what you can spend...then spend a couple of thousand less.."
if you look around and don't rush the process (i know hard to do....) there are some great deals out there...just have to find them..
remember we are coming into the summer heat...you will want a rig that will be able to do some nite runs...i'm a newbie too, so hope to see you out on the trails...until you get your rig, you can check if someone has an open seat and join in on the fun right now....

Started looking at jeeps this weekend. Looking at the x, but not sure on which tranny to choose. Auto or 6 speed? this jeep will also be used to get back and forth to work. Also curious about the soft tops and how well they hold up in the az heat. Kinda like the new 3 piece hard top. What do you guys recomend?:banghead:

You must be looking for a new JK? The softtops hold up fine, its the windows that get scratched from all the brush on the trails. The new freedom top is a nice compromise.

My Jeep is an everyday driver so I have the hard top on my JK and I love it (soft top is in the garage for the cooler weather ;) )... I think it is much nicer in the heat to have the hard top with the A/C pumping. As far as the Trani... I like the Auto for traffic and to relax on the trails (not as much thinking and I can hold a frosty beverage :) ) But a true Jeep "feel" is only had with the stick. There are a lot of good deals out there right now with this market... good luck with your search and keep us posted.

Welcome to VJC! I'm sure I'm going to catch a bunch of flack for everything I'm about to write, but here goes . . . I run a bikini top year round except during winter (just a bit too chilly in the mornings). The mid-summer heat isn't all that bad when you're moving down the road.:aagh: Also, the soft tops hold up really well but don't offer much in the way of theft protection (best to have a garage).
In my opinion, go with the manual. Yeah there's a lot more shifting (fun), but they generally have a lower 1st gear than the autos (= better crawl ratio), are a bit more stout, and you can use the tranny as a break on the steep hills. If you don't mind dropping the coin, go for a new JK. If you're looking to save money, I'd recommend a low-milage '00-'04 TJ with the I6 4.0L engine, NV3550 manual transmission, and Dana 44 rear.
The '00-'04 manual TJ's have the NV3550 transmission which can handle a lot more than the 4.0 can dish out, so you don't have to worry about screwing it up. As for the Rubicon v.s. non-Rubicon debate, some people like the lower 60:1 crawl ratio of the stock Rubicon NP241 for the rocks, and some prefer the higher geared NP231 (non-Rubi, 40:1 crawl ratio) for the mud, sand, snow, etc. I have an '02 Sahara and have always found the 40:1 crawl ratio plenty adequate on the rocks. The Rubicons also come stock with Dana 44s front and rear, so you can run up to 35" tires; non-Rubicons are generally limited to 33" tires due to the Dana 30 front.
Hope this helps! Good luck finding your Jeep and again, welcome to VJC!

Come on now... we all know it IS that bad :) Early morning or evening driving (sun gone) is not bad... traffic in the city, stop and go, or being 10th in line on a offroad train heading down a dusty road :baby:. I love my hard top and A/C...
