My TJ's headlight bezels are plastic. I washed them with mild
detergent, dried them, and applied three even coats of flat black
spray paint to them. They turned out great, and haven't chipped or
scratched yet. I even washed them once last year...

Two different people there told me that they couldn't match my
Gunmetal and put it into any type of container. I think it depends
on the color of the Jeep. Sherwin Williams Auto Paint store could do
it, though, except that their minimum order is one quart. That comes
out to about 4 spary cans. Or three spray cans and one regular can.
They will put it into whatever container you want, as long as it's at
least one quart. About $48.

You need advice on whether to stay inside and call the cops or to
dramatically increase your chances of being killed by confronting a
burglar in your Jeep (to keep it related)??

I can understand it if you were going to work and accidentally
interrupted the thief. But not if you know or possibly know someone is
in the Jeep then confront them. Better off having the cops take care of
it. You do carry insurance right?

The way I read it as: they have to have a weapon (see below in bold).
Also, this subject is for the AZVGC and not the AZVJC. Someone had to
say it! :o) This subject really should be answered by the gun experts.
Joe West!!!!

13-1508. Burglary in the first degree; classification

A. A person commits burglary in the first degree if such person or an
accomplice violates the provisions of either section 13-1506 or 13-1507
and knowingly possesses explosives, a deadly weapon or a dangerous
instrument in the course of committing any theft or any felony.

B. Burglary in the first degree of a nonresidential structure or a
fenced commercial or residential yard is a class 3 felony. It is a class
2 felony if committed in a residential structure.

Bill,

It's not? Try reading the Arizona Revised Statutes Title 13, Chapter 4.

<http://www.azleg.state.az.us/ars/13/title13.htm>
http://www.azleg.state.az.us/ars/13/title13.htm

There's some room for interpretation, but it reads fairly black and
white to me. In some instances you are justified to use deadly force to
prevent criminal activity, including crimes against property.

13-411. Justification; use of force in crime prevention

A. A person is justified in threatening or using both physical force and
deadly physical force against another if and to the extent the person
reasonably believes that physical force or deadly physical force is
immediately necessary to prevent the other's commission of arson of an
occupied structure under section 13-1704, burglary in the second or
first degree under section 13-1507 or 13-1508, kidnapping under section
13-1304, manslaughter under section 13-1103, second or first degree
murder under section 13-1104 or 13-1105, sexual conduct with a minor
under section 13-1405, sexual assault under section 13-1406, child
molestation under section 13-1410, armed robbery under section 13-1904,
or aggravated assault under section 13-1204, subsection A, paragraphs 1
and 2.

13-1507. Burglary in the second degree; classification

A. A person commits burglary in the second degree by entering or
remaining unlawfully in or on a residential structure with the intent to
commit any theft or any felony therein.

B. Burglary in the second degree is a class 3 felony.

It's not legal to walk out in the parking lot of the apartment complex
and waste them with 17 rounds to the face, but if they are in a fenced
yard, or in your garage it's a different story.

Subject: RE: Nasty tow strap picture

People always comment about the hook on the end of the tow strap (those that
come that way) as being dangerous and such....as well as the concept of
hooking a conventional tow strap (with no hook) around a tow hitch ball. '

Now don't get me wrong.....I am not saying I approve of either one of those
practices.

But....I've always wondered about one thing....I've never heard anyone talk
about what happens if the hook on the front or rear of your vehicle breaks
while you have a strap on it. Now....if the regular tow strap that is
looped around the hitch ball can turn into a missle and take someone out,
why doesn't any mention the same about the hook breaking off and taking
someone out? I've never heard any caution anyone else about that.

I am not flaming on Mike....it is simply that his comment, which I have seen
dozens and dozens of times before, caught my eye and I finally decided to
ask my question.

What causes us to poo poo one method and not another. (yes, I know the
straps that come with the hooks attached are often times pretty
cheap......and I also know what most folks pay for a pair of after market
tow hooks too.)

Wanna see why you should buy a good tow strap, and not one of the cheap
ones with the metal hooks attached? Wanna see why you shouldn't hook a
strap to a tow hitch ball?

Something to think about.

Subject: Re: ZJ lift kit advice?

Up to 4.5" and the lift is pretty easy and the ZJ will continue to
ride like stock but have a lot more flex on the trails. You can go up
to a 32" tire with 4.5". 4.5" is the smallest lift I would recommend
regardless of your intent. The cost is well worth it.

Over 4.5" and the real fun begins. You don't want to do a 4.5" plus
spacers. It'll cause no end of grief. Go with custom coils instead.
Track bars (front and rear) will have to be realigned to get optimal
suspension performance. The subframe will have to be strengthened and
all the control arm bracktery on the body will need to be beefed up.
The rear driveshaft will require an SYE kit (if you use the Tom Wood
kit for the NP242 expect to do a little more modification). The front
driveshaft will require a little shortening. Of course the on-
pavement ride is a little quirky, but easy to get used to.

Lift kits. The best is really to piece one together if you can. I
like the hiem-jointed/OEM rubber control arms better than the johnny
jointed (RE), or poly-bushed (rancho, skyjacker, etc.). These won't
bind, but will require rebuilding every once in a while. A good
fabricator (ask around, but I like Hunter Offroad Products) can make
the heim-joint/OEM bushing arms for the same price (or less) than you
can buy them off-the-shelf. Look for a front track bar that pivots
verically on the upper mount. There is a trackbar relocation bracket
that moves the lower trackbar mount up above the axle. I like the JKS
adjustable rear track bar. Coils: You'll need to decide what you are
planning on using the ZJ for. I went for extreme articulation and
ordered custom coils with a spring rate around 130#/in. The RE 4.5"
coils come in around 175#/in and I found them a bit stiff. Of course,
longer brake lines for the front (RE has these, I think they are YJ
brake lines). Building a lift that is higher than 4.5" for a ZJ costs
about the same as buying a 4.5" lift for a ZJ. Look around for used
suspension parts to save a few bucks.

Of course, you can buy my ZJ (which is trail ready) instead ;-)

Feel free to email me directly if you have more questions.

I've ran into that problem at both Space Age & Sherwin Williams (formerly
Glendale Paint & Supply). My color paint is only available in base coat,
so they can't put it in a spray can. They'll sell me a 1/2 pint of base
coat for about $43, but then I'll have to get everything else to go with
the base coat.

I think rattlecan black is looking better and better. Do you guys have any
recommendations for black paint. It's going on the front bumper, so I'd
like to have a strong paint that will resist chips.

Thanks,
Ben

Two different people there told me that they couldn't match my
Gunmetal and put it into any type of container. I think it depends
on the color of the Jeep. Sherwin Williams Auto Paint store could do
it, though, except that their minimum order is one quart. That comes
out to about 4 spary cans. Or three spray cans and one regular can.
They will put it into whatever container you want, as long as it's at
least one quart. About $48.

Sorry Scott we were talking about the Jeep in the front yard. Inside the
house is definitely a different situation.

You're right they may get away. But they are idiots and will eventually
get caught anyway, just a matter of time that's all.

Rick,
If you keep receipts and have it appraised I don't see why you wouldn't get back at least most of what you put in to it. Of course the appraisal may raise your insurance. ;)

True, its slightly different. But as I see it, one day they are jacking
cars, the next month they move up to breaking into houses. May as well
stop them while their criminal history is still young.

Sorry Scott we were talking about the Jeep in the front yard. Inside the
house is definitely a different situation.

You're right they may get away. But they are idiots and will eventually
get caught anyway, just a matter of time that's all.

Joey,

Yeah, the cops come by an hour later and file a report that is never
followed up on. Most of the time they don't even dust the vehicle for
prints. The thief is free to steal again. Sometimes these thieves come
back to rob the same place again.

BTW, did your cops ever catch the guys that robbed your neighbors house
last year? Hmm, lets just hide in the closet while they empty out the
house. Then when they are gone we'll call the police. If we are lucky
they won't find us in the closet and kill us or beat the heck out of us
or rape our wives or daughters while we helplessly watch.

You are a good friend. Sometimes we just gotta agree to disagree to keep
the peace, right?

:D

<http://www.azleg.state.az.us/ars/13/title13.htm>
http://www.azleg.state.az.us/ars/13/title13.htm

It's not legal to walk out in the parking lot of the apartment complex
and waste them with 17 rounds to the face, but if they are in a fenced
yard, or in your garage it's a different story.

I am certainly NOT the gun-law expert...

Here is the local gun-law expert:

Tom LaFrance

Tom teaches a Concealed Carry class here in Arizona so he knows the laws
better than most.

The right answer to your question is that you should avoid using your gun
any chance you have. There are specific occasions when you can use your gun
(as outlined by the attached ARS that some one posted) but for the most
part, you should do everything in your power not to have to use it. Stay
out of situations where you might need a gun... be constantly alert so that
you can avoid circumstances where you might need a weapon AND, don't draw
your weapon unless you have reason to believe that you will need it AND be
prepared to use it if you pull it.

I'm sure Tom will elaborate more; but I learned how NOT to use a weapon in
my CCW class...

Kind Regards,

Joe West

Yeah Joe, please do advise. My mistake. Perhaps I shouldn't have said
"against the law" as much as it's usually not a good idea since you then
need to convince a court of law that your use of deadly force was
justifiable. Sometimes the guilty go free and the innocent don't and despite
the letter of the law, it's up to interpretation of the law as well as what
happened at the scene. I'm just not sure shooting some kid who is stealing
your stereo would be seen as a justifiable action by a judge or jury.

I guess we are getting into AZVGC territory here but I think it's not a bad
idea for the AZVJC group to discuss whether or not you can shoot somebody
who is stealing stuff from your Jeep. Although, overall the decision anyone
reading this thread makes on this issue should be based on law and not from
our conversations on this thread.

Should we move this to AZVGC?

I'm looking for a CJ speedo, and other CJ guages. Or, if you have something similar to a CJ speedo, that too. Not looking to pay too much, but I need some guages for the Nisotalet.

Has this been cleared up or do we want someone to go out and take a look?
I will be willing to go out there Saturday morning around 8:00 at the Texaco in FJ if some others want to go.

BLM did not do this................... yes, it's possible the miner did this but this waterfall is well onto BLM lands......... not private. Jack and I will go out this weekend and take a look. Anyone interested in tagging along?

Let me throw a wrench into everyone’s thinking. That is the area with the minor. Is it not possible that he did the blasting because he didn’t want people coming through his mine area? Before somebody goes off blaming the BLM that should be looked at and figured out…..

That’s my two cents…..

This is what I got when I entered the coordinates at topozone

Here's a USGS topographic map from the TopoZone!

Subject: [TR] Coves of Saguaro Lake - Monday, January 20, 2003

Hello All,

Phil Thompson is leading a Coves of Saguaro Lake trail run on Monday, January 20, 2003.

When: Meet around 10:00 am
Where: Mc Donald's on Power Road 1/4 Mile North of U.S. 60 on west side, or 10:30 at Butcher Jones Parking area.
Rating: 2.5+
Length: ?
CB Channel:

Plenty of open spaces to play in. I'd prefer someone with intimate knowledge of the area to lead but it'll be fun one way or another. Come on out and enjoy the weather.

At the Coves of Saguaro Lake, there are at least 4 coves to play in, on, and around. Many hill climbs provide a challenge to all levels of 4-Wheelers and vehicles.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

I say "poo poo" to all winch cables that have a metal hook on
the end of them for the same reason as the tow strap complaint. Stu,
you have a good point.

I have Lojack in mine. Unless they have added some features, what you
described isn't how it works. The instructions right off the back of
my card from my wallet say to call the police department in the city
it was stolen from and give them the VIN. Then the police send out a
signal to the unit in the vehicle which causes the stolen vehicle to
transmit. Certain police cars can then track the stolen vehicle. The
cars that can have 4 small antennas in a square pattern on the trunk.
At least in mine, there is no notification to me or the police that
the vehicle has been stolen until I notice and report it.

but allot cheaper than losing my jeep insurance will not even cover
half of what I put into it and I have full coverage and expensive
insurance at that with the LoJack it will go down dramaticly it has
other cool features also

They now have a new release costs $100.00 more but you have a remote and if
they break in and start it without key it alerts you they also want 5
contact numbers to alert you and by your key ring beeper and phone call yes
i makes it faster to you to check it out and call police and they also have
a new hidden feature kill switch where for instance you have to turn your
right blinker on or it will not start or some other routine. So this is the
next modle the have with what I metioned above cost for new unit 850.00 plus
lifetime monitor for 250.00
