Got this in my email, thought some folks on here might be able to use
some of this stuff. The have some really good prices on soft tops and
accessories, espcially tinted windows for TJ's. I'm not affiliated
with them just passing it along.

Subject: [TR] Tin Can Alley - Saturday, January 18, 2003 - Reminder

Hello All,

Stu Olson is leading a Tin Can Alley trail run on Saturday, January 18, 2003.

When: 9:30 AM - aired down and ready to hit the trail.
Where: State Route 74, Mile Marker 11, (commonly called the Haul Road, about 9ish some miles west of the turn off to the Lake Pleasent Marina)
Rating: 3.0+
Length: day trip
CB Channel: 4

This is a fun trail for drivers and vehicles of all levels, IMO. We've had stock 4x4 vehicles make the run with only an occasional strap needed (depends largely on your tires and swaybar discos, etc.) If you like roller coasters, you should enjoy the trail...plenty of ups and downs. If memory serves me correctly, Mike Chatfield once told me they did some Halloween spook runs in this area a few years back.

Pack a lunch and something to drink....I don't think Pizza Hut will deliver that far out (although it would be a cool route to have!) Plase check your ride over and ensure it is in good operating condition. We will be a ways from the nearest parts store. Depending on the number of vehicles, we will probably spend about 5 or 6 hours on the trail, but as always, be prepared for a longer day if someone has breakage or we have a larger group.

One last thing....If you don't like 6 month old pups, please don't sign up for this run. I'll have both of mine along (they are working on their Jeep dog qualifications) and I wouldn't want you to have a lousy day putting up with them. They are pretty well behaved but I have had some problems with them bringing back body parts.

.

Just kidding!

If you use OziExplorer mapping software and desire a track log of the trails for that area, drop me an e-mail and I shall send you that and the waypoint file as well.

Here is a write-up from a previous run of the trail.

I was checking the web site to see how many people were signed up. We are at 13 vehicles right now.

I really would not want to push it past that point, although it could be done. Lots of folks were tentative. If you know you will or will not be going, how about updating your status so well all know how many are going to be hitting the trail.

See you on Saturday.

75563 From: DesertJeep <joey@d...>
Date: Wed Jan 15, 2003 9:38pm
Subject: RE: Problem with Front Axles

Craig,
Why do you say the front axle is not locking in? Is there a locker in
the differential?

I am going to assume that you have an open front axel. Here are a couple
of tests you perform. First start the Jeep, apply the emergency break
and put the transmission in neutral. Also put the transfer case in 4WD.
Now on the passenger side of the axel there is a couple of vacuum line
connecting to the axel disconnect. Pull them off the disconnect and see
if there is suction on one of the lines. If so take the transfer case
out of 4WD putting it in 2WD and check the vacuum lines again. Now the
other line should have suction.
If you do not have suction on either of the lines the things to check
would be to make sure the other end is connected at the transfer case
and the condition of the lines. You want to look for cracks, kinks,
breaks or even pinches in the line.
If the lines are good the next test would be to verify the engagement
ring and fork are working. You need to put the front axel on jack stands
with the tires off the ground (or a large floor jack in the middle of
the axel will work). Turn on the engine, to create a vacuum, put the
transmission in neutral and transfer case in 4WD. Now try to turn the
passenger side tire. One of two things should happen. Either it won't
turn because the drive shafts are locked together and the rear wheels
are preventing it from turning. OR it will turn and the drivers side
wheel turns in the opposite direction. If you do have a locker the wheel
will turn in the same direction.
If this does not happen you will have to place a pan under the
disconnect to catch the gear oil while you remove the cover. Check the
inner workings for any thing broken (the fork) or maybe gunk build up on
the axel splines keeping the sleeve from moving. You will also be able
to check the functionality if a friend can move the transfer case in and
out of 4WD.

Or something like that.

Subject: Owl protections will be reviewed

Interesting news about the Spotted Owl...

1 Owl protections will be reviewed Ý
The Bush Administration on Tuesday pledged to review the federal
protections for the northern spotted owl and marbled murrelet that
led to the collapse of public land logging in the Northwest through
the 1990s. It also said it would reconsider the designation of
"critical habitat" for the two species in light of the possible
economic impacts. The commitments came in response to lawsuits by the
timber industry alleging that federal biologists were years overdue
in reviewing the health of the two species, both listed as threatened
under the federal Endangered Species Act. The review could conclude
that the species no longer warrant listing and the strong federal
protection that comes with it, although biologists say that's
unlikely. Industry officials leave open the possibility, though, that
recent studies of spotted owls suggest they may not be as dependent
on old-growth timber as first thought. Such findings could free up
some forests for logging. (01/15/03) Oregonian

Subject: ZJ lift kit advice?

Hi!

My tire treads are getting a bit thin and I'll soon be looking for new rubber. Since the shocks are getting a bit flabby as well, I figure I might do a mild lift kit at the same time.

Anyone here in the brain trust have an opinion on what makes for the best tire/susupension combo for a ZJ already equipped with the UpCountry package? If 90% of my driving is on the street/highway, would I be best served by going no larger than a 30X9.5 and sticking with the stock suspension?

If a lift is a good option, any opinions on OME vs. Rancho vs. Skyjacker vs. ProComp kits?

Anyone out there with a mildly-modified ZJ and wisdom to share?

Thanks!
Bill

Wanna see why you should buy a good tow strap, and not one of the cheap
ones with the metal hooks attached? Wanna see why you shouldn't hook a
strap to a tow hitch ball?

Something to think about.

Pretty good description for trouble shooting, Joey!

Craig, if you're not getting vacuum at the actuator, be sure to trace the vac lines to actuator all the way back up to their source (ie. manifold vacuum). Pay particular attention to where the vac lines run close to heat sources. Seems Jeep, and some mechanics, like to run lines under the air cleaner assy and in turn, quite close to the engine. The little "T" fittings that form junctions in the vacuum line routing can easily melt shut. Hopefully, this turns out to be your problem, as it's extremely cheap and easy to fix. Some new line and fittings at Autozone will be less than $5. Be sure to run the new line thru a cooler spot, though! Even if you need a whole new vacuum harness (the colored hard plastic lines), they are still relatively cheap to get...about $35 - $45 from dealer, I believe.

Bottom line is you've got some cheap, easy things to check out (and that are know to fail/deteriorate) before planning on doing an axle shaft swap.

Best of luck,
Tom J.
