Daily driver, 3000 miles in 9 months, AND a trip to Moab. That's some
REALLY low daily mileage! I put more miles than that on my Jeep and
it isn't my daily driver.

Yeah, but I've seen how you drive! LOL! Seriously, wasn't
there another factor in both failures? Didn't you both use the
incorrect fluid in your trannies? You both used the recommended lube
from the FSM, right? And that was a misprint. Too much sulphor to
wear the brass bushings, or some such nonsense... So, was that a
part of the problem, or not?

Hello All,

Clint Travis is leading an Unspecified trail run on Sunday, January 19, 2003.

When: 8:30 am
Where: not sure yet
Rating: None
Length: 6-8 hours
CB Channel: 4

Anyone interested in running a 3.5 to 4.5 rated trail on Sunday. I was thinking either the Table Mesa Rd area or Florence Junction area. It would be nice if the trail had some scenary for my rider. I would like to go just North of Phoenix because I live on that side of town, but it seems the Table Mesa Rd. area is not very scenic. If your interested and know a trail, drop me an email.

Hey Jeff,
I'm thinking that your current shocks, assuming that they were basically
sized correctly for the 4.5" lift, should work "ok" for the LA kit. Next
time you get down here to do a run with us "down south", we can ramp your
Jeep. I've never used a "ramp" that someone's made. We have several areas,
on several of the runs, that have natural "ramps".. They work great for
flexing all four corners at the same time. You can get out of the Jeep and
crawl all around it, measuring whatever you wish !!
Much more "interesting" than driving up a metal mesh ramp ;)

Best,
Fred

The sound from my TJ soundbar can barely be heard over the road noise when driving down the highway. Is there a way to relocate the factor soundbar in a 98 TJ so it sits over the front seats instead of behind them? Has anyone done this? It looks like this could be done with some modification to the mounting brackets but then I would need an extension for the speaker wires and dome light which I have no idea where to purchase.

Or is there an aftermarket soundbar I can puchase that is designed for this purpose?

It seems to me that if you tack welded your caps, then saw a rotation, it would be a more accurate indicator of trouble. If the cap is not rotating, it should not elongate the ears, except if massively over-loaded, then the u-joint should fail to save the axle. (just IMO, I haven't been doing this long enough to have a lot of experience, just a real good back ground in physics)

Hi Fred,

I disagree that tacking the caps of the u-joints masks the problem... actually, it helps to prevent the problem by
keeping the caps from rotating... which keeps them from coming loose (rotational friction actually wears the yoke ears to wear causing the caps to become looser as they rotate) AND it keeps them from coming out.
Every u-joint failure I had up to the point I welded my caps was because a cap rotated and then came out under
load.... now that I have the caps tack welded... I've had only one u-joint break and it actually sheared off the entire
cap assembly at the base of the cap. Oh.. and there is one other benefit to tack welding the caps... if the cap doesn't come out when the u-joint breaks, you stand a better chance of not elongating the yoke ears because there is nothing running into the yoke when the u-joint fails.

I too marked my u-joints with paint and the caps ALWAYS were turned after a hard run... I suspect if everyone ran out and replaced their axles when their u-joint caps rotated... we'd all be broke from purchasing axles after every run.

All in all... I see more benefits than drawbacks in tack welding u-joint caps... just my opinion.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

What I (and others) do, is mark the u-joint cap and yokes with a bit of white paint. When (if) the u-joint caps begin to turn, it means that the yokes ears have stretched, and, the best bet would be to replace the inner and outer axle (along with the u-joint) at that time. Simply replacing the u-joint usual won't buy you much as the cap will continue to turn (usually), because the yoke ear(s) are wobbled out. Some people tack weld the cap to the yoke, but that simply mask the problem of the yoke ears being stretched.
Here's a photo of a cap that's begun to turn.

Should you replace front axle U-joints regularly to prevent explosion? These tend to get abused when you 4 wheel, so should they be included in a scheduled replacement, and if so, how often, and what would eb the proper replacement part? Stock? aftermarket? Upgrade?

I've experienced the same thing as Joe. Mine would rotate regardless of age. I have welded mine into place. I did have one tack weld break but rewelded it about a year ago and continue to abuse them with no problems in that time. I've seen others weld a fender washer over the cap to keep it from walking out. I like that idea and will probably do it next time around for some extra insurance against taking out a ball joint.

The sway bar has a tapered hole where the factory links connect, so when

Jeff,

Until you determine otherwise, I would go with the shocks you have.
They should be pretty close. After doing a major suspension change, I
always try to do a shakedown run where I can flex things out nice and
easy and check for binding, etc. Doesn't have to be a challenging run,
just one with some places to flex the coils and see how it all works.
You should be able to determine if your shocks are limiting your droop
by flexing out a tire and then checking the spring to see if it is still
quite tight in the bucket.

Joe,

I believe it is quite common for leaf spring owners to pull the sway
bars (so I have been told). Not having them on a TJ is really scary,
IMO.

I have had my Sway Bars disconnected for a week and have not noticed any
difference on the road driving. I even had to hit the brakes and go
into
the next lane very fast.

What are the bad points of driving like this? Will it hurt the Jeep?

I'm surprised you haven't noticed any difference. The only way it will
hurt the jeep is if you have to swerve really quickly and the jeep ends
up shiny-side down. I have an '83 CJ7 that I purchased in '95, and I've
driven it ever since then without sway bars...

Last week I installed a new front bumper on my '98 XJ. In doing so, I had
to remove the vacuum reservoir (?) from inside the front right side of the
old bumper. Is it a big deal if I just leave it off and cap the vacuum
line, or is there something that won't work properly now?

Thanks for the help.

Well Jeep never admits to it so nobody ever really knows. There are some
conflicting recommendations regarding GL3 and GL5 in the FSM and owners
manual. There was never a recall notice or TSB of that sort released. If
you can get an actual person from Jeep to confirm which is correct
please send me a copy of the letter. I have had no success going down
that path so its still just a rumor (that I happen to believe.)
Regardless, both Joe and I followed the recommendations as printed in
our owners manual.

And of course you are right about the abuse. The AX15 just can't handle
the kind of abuse that we dish out. Of course I have it from reliable
sources that my AW4 can. :)

Yeah, but I've seen how you drive! LOL! Seriously, wasn't
there another factor in both failures? Didn't you both use the
incorrect fluid in your trannies? You both used the recommended lube
from the FSM, right? And that was a misprint. Too much sulphor to
wear the brass bushings, or some such nonsense... So, was that a
part of the problem, or not?

Andy,
Let me hook ya up with the 411 that I experienced the other week. I was in
need of a coupla sway links and ole Stu baby hooked me up nicely (did i ever
thank you Stu??? if i didn't then THX BUNCHES!!!!). any how... i couldn't
get them damn links off my old sway bar for the life of me! i took the
entire sway bar off and set it on the ground with the threads to the links
on the concrete. This may not be the best way but it sure worked for me! I
took a 4# sledge hammer and lightly tapped with as much force as i thought
that sway bar could handle (which is alot) and i'd be a son of a b*&^% if
that thing flew across the driveway!!! it was pretty kewl! almost hit my son
so i did the next one and aimed for my wife. she was not too happy. i found
it humorous though. another night on the couch!!!

any way. brute force sometimes is the best. specially if you don't need the
links anymore.

HTH ("hope this helps" - for you ungeeks)

It's just a quick zap with the wirefeed. No more than a split second. Not enough to get much penetration, just enough to tack them in place.

What about heat applied to the bearing cap and grease? (I pictures a flash fire as I weld the caps, washers etc&)

Fred

Should you replace front axle U-joints regularly to prevent explosion? These tend to get abused when you 4 wheel, so should they be included in a scheduled replacement, and if so, how often, and what would eb the proper replacement part? Stock? aftermarket? Upgrade?
