What I (and others) do, is mark the u-joint cap and yokes with a bit of white paint. When (if) the u-joint caps begin to turn, it means that the yokes ears have stretched, and, the best bet would be to replace the inner and outer axle (along with the u-joint) at that time. Simply replacing the u-joint usual won't buy you much as the cap will continue to turn (usually), because the yoke ear(s) are wobbled out. Some people tack weld the cap to the yoke, but that simply mask the problem of the yoke ears being stretched.
Here's a photo of a cap that's begun to turn.

Table Mesa is exit #236 and is about 10-15 miles north of Bell Rd, which is about 10 miles north of I-10. You should be able to get there in around 30 minutes with normal traffic.
Hope this helps.

I dont have a trailer but if someone has a spare or has one and cannot make it, I would be glad to pull it out there with my ZJ and haul some of the big stuff out if there is a place to dump it afterwards. BTW, I cant get my Internet Explorer to work on this dang laptop so I cannot check or sign up for trips but I plan on being there with my significant other on the 25th, BTW, how far up I-17 from I-10 is the exit for Table Mesa ?

To add to what Fred said, many u-joints can not be greased because they have no fitting. Ive taken a number of u-joints apart that were going dry (the grease had been all used up). Obviously, these u-joints would not have lasted much longer&.first the needle bearings begin to grind into powder and then it fails (saw that on a CV drive shaft u-joint). If you are lucky, you will notice the vibration before it blows and so be able to fix it in the comfort of your own drive way.
Aftermarket u-joints with grease fittings can be installed. I have a few of these and they have provided me with good service. Of course there often times a lengthy discussion that follows that statement concerning the strength of a u-joint that has a grease fitting in it.
Ive never lost a u-joint on the trail, although I almost did during a run in Moab. The retaining clip had spit out and the cap was working its way out of the yoke ear. I now run full circle clips and dont expect that to be an issue any more.
That all being said, I also will regularly turn my front tires from side to side in an attempt to get traction when climbing a steep hill or obstacle. Doing so, in this situation, does no harm as long as you do not have a BIG load on the u-joint&.and when climbing a hill, the majority of your weight as transferred to the rear axle and the loose rubble under the front tires allows them to easily spin (which is why you are having a problem climbing the hill in the first place). Now&..in a situation where one is using a front tire to climb up a near vertical ledge, and you must turn the tire well over to one direction so that it will grab with the sidewall (or some similar situation), then yes, you are putting a much bigger load on the u-joint and it can certainly fail more quickly in that kind of situation. I always cross my fingers when I find myself in that situation with no other way out. When sitting with your Jeep on a hill climb and slowly turning your tires from left to right, looking for a bit of traction AND using sensible throttle control, your chances of a u-joint failure is much less. Before I had my front diff locked, that was a very common technique used to help get to the top of the hill. In my opinion, if you are regularly blowing u-joints while doing this, then most likely your driving style and mine are more different than one may think.

Hi Fred,
I disagree that tacking the caps of the u-joints masks the problem... actually, it helps to prevent the problem by
keeping the caps from rotating... which keeps them from coming loose (rotational friction actually wears the yoke ears to wear causing the caps to become looser as they rotate) AND it keeps them from coming out.
Every u-joint failure I had up to the point I welded my caps was because a cap rotated and then came out under
load.... now that I have the caps tack welded... I've had only one u-joint break and it actually sheared off the entire
cap assembly at the base of the cap. Oh.. and there is one other benefit to tack welding the caps... if the cap doesn't come out when the u-joint breaks, you stand a better chance of not elongating the yoke ears because there is nothing running into the yoke when the u-joint fails.
I too marked my u-joints with paint and the caps ALWAYS were turned after a hard run... I suspect if everyone ran out and replaced their axles when their u-joint caps rotated... we'd all be broke from purchasing axles after every run.
All in all... I see more benefits than drawbacks in tack welding u-joint caps... just my opinion.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

I'm trying to catch up on my AZVJC email and I've read
a lot of emails on the loop 202 topic. I haven't read
all of the related emails yet but, based on what I've
read so far, I believe all of these emails are misguided.
There is no issue with whether or not the event was
supported by the masses. It doesn't have to be. There
is no issue with whether or not the event was discussed
enough. It was. That's why "enough" people had signed
up for it. And that's why further discussion became
unnecessary. I seem to recall from previous freeway
opening events that ADOT did impose an upper limit on
the number of vehicles participating (due to space
allocations?).
The only issue here is that people who signed up didn't
show up and, although I don't know this for sure, it
sounds like they didn't bother to tell anyone.
Club members who didn't sign up for the event should not
be defending themselves for not participating.
Remember, the workings of the AZVJC allows anyone to
initiate any event or effort they wish and to solicit
participation from other club members. That's how the
Rodeo/Chedeski Fire run started. It's how the Coves
clean-ups started. That's how just about everything
good the club has ever done got started.

I've experienced the same thing as Joe. Mine would rotate regardless of age. I have welded mine into place. I did have one tack weld break but rewelded it about a year ago and continue to abuse them with no problems in that time. I've seen others weld a fender washer over the cap to keep it from walking out. I like that idea and will probably do it next time around for some extra insurance against taking out a ball joint.

Subject: Proper Procedure for applying RTV....
Folks,
Over the weekend, a friend and I replaced the tail shaft assembly
in his 93 XJ's 2 wheel drive transmission. The tailshaft mates
directly with the back of the transmission. Anyway, there are no
gaskets in this process, sealant is all that is used (even from the
factory). I was curious, in all my years of working on cars, I've
heard a few different things about how to apply and use RTV. The
directions say to put a bead of about 1/16" to 1/4" around everything,
including the bolt holes. Then, it says to 'immediately' put the part
back together. It also says to tighten the bolts so as 'not to
squeeze all of the RTV out of the surfaces'. Now, I'm a bit confused
about the last part. The tailshaft assembly is meant to be torqued to
100 or so foot pounds. How does one tighten this and not squeeze out
the red goop? I realized that some will come out in the process. Is
there anyone out there who is a complete RTV artist? --a guy who
could seal anything to anything? I'm curious what your 'procedure'
is. Anyone have any tips and insights?
THX.

The best way I use RTV is to let it cure till its tacky then install parts

fittings, then that can be done easily. Otherwise, the only way to
grease them is to remove them from the axle shafts and pull the caps
to inject some lube. It's my opinion that if you're going to remove
them, then you might as well replace them. (Keep in mind that I say
that as someone who wheels his Jeep frequently on fairly difficult
trails.) But this still raises the question of how frequently should
you do this. Since I wheel my Jeep a lot, I prefer to do this once a
year. However, I've read statements by some people that the axle
shaft yokes aren't designed for frequent installation and removal of
u-joints and that doing so will loosen up the press fit. I've not
had any such problems.

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - FR-42 - Saturday, January 11, 2003
Hello All,
James Towle lead a trail run Saturday, January 11, 2003 across FR-42
A little late with this, here we go....
The day started good all but one of of met at the corner of Bartlet Lake Dam Road &; Cave Creek Road. Nasser in his green YJ, Rich in his primered CJ5 (I believe), Shannon in his white TJ, three other white TJ's, a grey TJ, another green stock YJ, Gary's crawler machine XJ and my white TJ. I apologize for not remembering names. Nasser brought along his daughter and her two Aussie exchange students, I had two of my kids and our two Ausie exchange students, Rich had a couple of kids with him and one of the guys in one of the white TJ had two little boys that were great.
We got to the trail head at 11:00 and realized that we were missing someone that said they were going to be here from Tucson, so Gary went back and checked for them. He saw no sign of them so we went about our way.
Nasser agreed to take point since there were only a couple of people that had done this trail before. The trail, for the most part, was smooth. The stock YJ rarely had any problems and never once had to use a strap. We got to the "End of the Earth" and stopped and ate lunch after playing on the hill. We then continued down the trail and some of us took a little detour at one point and went down to the rock garden to play.
It was a gorgeous day to be out and our friends from down under had a great day. I know the boys that were with me wanted to go home and buy Jeeps so they could be apart of the fun. This trip was, as they put it, the highlight of the trip to America, so far. A big thanks to everyone that went for being such good sponsors for our sport.
We finished up and got back to the parking lot by 3:00 or so. A big thanks to Nasser for leading us. It was great to meet/see everyone. To those of you that this was your first run with AzVJC, welcome and let's do it again.
--James
I let my son use my camera without instruction so I have no pictures of everyone's Jeeps, I have sceneary and people shots... I would appreciate seeing everyone's pictures.

Subject: RE: Preventive maintenence suggestions....
Hi Fred,
I disagree that tacking the caps of the u-joints masks the problem... actually, it helps to prevent the problem by
keeping the caps from rotating... which keeps them from coming loose (rotational friction actually wears the yoke ears to wear causing the caps to become looser as they rotate) AND it keeps them from coming out.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

I disagree. My AX15 crapped out this past year at 28k miles and I maintained it meticulously up to that point. Joe W's AX15 died this past year and his also had fairly low mileage.

Why rebuilt an AX-15, switch to an AX-15 they are stronger and more reliable, how much more I guess is a matter of opinion but I have an Ax-15 with over 200K and have had no problems with it

Subject: Loop 202 commotion

Hi Fred,
I disagree that tacking the caps of the u-joints masks the problem... actually, it helps to prevent the problem by
keeping the caps from rotating... which keeps them from coming loose (rotational friction actually wears the yoke ears to wear causing the caps to become looser as they rotate) AND it keeps them from coming out.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

Should you replace front axle U-joints regularly to prevent explosion? These tend to get abused when you 4 wheel, so should they be included in a scheduled replacement, and if so, how often, and what would eb the proper replacement part? Stock? aftermarket? Upgrade?

THX.

The best way I use RTV is to let it cure till its tacky then install parts
together. Make sure you remove all traces of old RTV! This tends to keep
some RTV in between the parts.

U-joints need to be lubed periodically. If your u-joints have grease
fittings, then that can be done easily.
