Joey,
I believe the advantage comes in when the front is
locked and you need to make a tight turn. You can
disconnect without needing to shift out of 4LO (or
4HI). Kinda like having a OX locker but without the
cost. :^)

Tim,
My locker, when in 4 wd HI or LO, is engaged. Disconnecting half the
axle or one wheel from the drive train now means that all the power goes
to the other front wheel still engaged. If you think about it, that is
the selling point for a locker... When one side looses traction the
other wheel gets you out.

I was hoping mine LockRite worked like that in my YJ. I was testing it
to see if I could put a solid axel in front and was not satisfied with
the results. I engaged the axel (reversed the vacuumed hoses) and
coasted while in 2wd. I did not get the clicking noise like the rear
LockRite does, but instead got wheel chirping.
You think there could be something wrong with the locker? I have
inspected it and checked its functionality while the diff cover was off.
All appeared good.

Many of us run LockRites in the front (D30) axle of out TJ's. As
mentioned, the TJ's do not have locking/unlocking hubs. The hubs and
axles turn all the time. The driveshaft (in 2wd) only free spins. The
LockRite is basically invisible when in 2wd. It is *NOT* locked at all.
The only way you'll know it's there is from a slight clicking sound
heard when turning.

Subject: Tera 60R woes
I am posting this to possibly save others the grief that I have had so far.
I purchased a custom Tera60R from DriveTrain Direct in November. They built it to my measurements and specs (gears, width, brake type, locker etc). Off Road Unlimited installed it for me. So far, so good. The rear looked great and ORU did a good install. My instructions were to drive it for a couple of short (10-15) mile rides on-road and let it cool 30+ minutes in between. Also to not tow or trail it for 300 miles. I did so and waited until about 350 miles before I took it off road. 2 weekends ago I did Judgement Day with my buddy Rick King, Troy, Roger Tomas, John, and a few others. I had no issues that were jeep related and the run was fun.
On the way home I noticed a whine as I cruised down I-17. I tirned off at Carefree Highway (SR74) and as I slowed down the noise was worse. I stopped and started to feel under side components for heat - thinking it was my transmission. Nope, it was my new (and very expensive/beefy) rear end. Too hot to touch. Oil has started to seep out of the driveshaft seal. I limped to the Mobil station and AAA towed me home. On Monday AAA towed me to ORU. They diagnosed it as a trashed pinion gear - after 450 miles of relatively gentle use.
Both DriveTrain Direct and Tera have agreed to make me whole again - as they certainly should. I (and they) knew of this problem in earlly Tera60's but was told that a redesigned housing allowed the gear lube to get to the top of the case - a common problem among rear high-pinion setups.
My concern is now centered around what they will do to mitigate this from happening all over again. So far their answer is to re-drill the fill hole to allow more lube into the diff. There may be others as well - we'll see. I really want the Tera60 - it has 35 spline Superior axles, big disk brakes with an imbedded drum for the pbrake and ARB locker. The case is designed to allow ground clearance greater than a stock D44. It is a reverse cut which nearly hides the drive shaft from view. The axle tubes and case are extra thick and beefy, so this should be as close to bullet proof as you can get for a Jeep. It is sweet both on the road and off - ubtil it whines&...
I'll post an update as this progresses.

Subject: RE: Re: 4 Wheelers Supply; Just when you thought that service couldn't get any better...
Ok, lets be fair.
There are a number of great companies and people in the valley doing
business, not just 4Wheelers. No company is perfect.
4Wheelers is an excellent company; they have been in business forever
and have a lot of loyal customers, including myself. Customers do not
become loyal without good reason. Several people in the group have come
to the defense of 4Wheelers, because they are loyal and have a good
history with the company. However, with that said, they are still a
business with employees. The goal of the company (owners/management) is
to provide service and products, provide good customer service and make
a profit. This is how a business, stays in business.
I missed the thread where you explained what happened, other than you
were displeased with the service you received. Every company that
exists has good and bad or should I say not so good employees. Most of
the club knows Barry, who is on the Walks on water level and others
behind the counter who are great as well. If you have had service done,
then you know Dave, who is right there with Barry. Normally, we suggest
people talk to the people we know, because they go the extra mile to
make sure club members are well taken care of. They are fellow
wheelers, understand what we do and most importantly, why we do it.
They will make sure you get outstanding customer service and really
important, get the club discount. <grin>
Now, I don't know everybody in the company, but I do know many and most
seem very knowledgeable and really want to help. I have been at
4Wheelers many many times when there are soooooo many people waiting for
help, the staff can barley see straight. The phones are ringing off the
hook, the staff is talking to 3 people at the same time, and two on the
other side of the counter. Another 6 are on hold waiting for Barry!
<big grin> This is usually the norm during lunch and on weekends. I
don't know if you were in during this time, but if so, I could see how
things could be a little tense. If it was during a slow time, there may
not be as much defense.
No one is perfect, including 4Wheelers, but they have made many of us
very very happy. Personally, they have always treated me very well. It
is conceivable that someone could offer less than good/excellent
customer service, but I truly believe, if the right people knew, they
would take care of it.
You mention "They were contacted, never heard the outcome." Does that
mean, the problem actually happened to someone else or someone else made
the call. Have you personally been in contact with Barry or Brian?
Now, I have had poor service at a couple of shops in the area, and have
not gone back to talk to the owners or others, I just didn't go back. I
also posted the poor service, but it was with a well know Poor Service
Provider, we all disliked. I'm not knocking your post, but in the case
of a company with a good reputation, in any field, I might consider
following up, to give them a chance to make it right.
Posting good or bad can have a huge impact on a business. However, I
would hate to see a company suffer from the poor business practice of a
single malcontent.
My humble opinion.

They were contacted, never heard the outcome, the day it happened
there was really no other choice but to go to a shop that would
help, which was done. As you said if you have a shop give you lousy
service you say so, and good service you say so. I have made
several posts about shops that have given good service, and in the
past even about 4 Wheelers. Let's just say this bad service hit a
REALLY bad nerve with me, not to say I may not give them a chance in
the future, but while they are generally good to work with they are
not perfect.

Salt River Principal Meridian, Pinal County, Arizona. The proposed
use area is covered by the Mineral Mtn. 7.5' USGS. The location is
shown on the attached map.
Activity: CalRoc has submitted an application for a Special
Recreation Permit (SRP # AZA-32276) for use of public lands in the
Cottonwood Canyon area in connection with a competitive 4 wheel drive
(4WD) rock crawling event on March 8 and 9, 2003.
Field Trip: A field trip is planned to examine on-site the proposed
use area, discuss the proposed event, impacts and potential
mitigation. The permit applicant and/or representative will be
on-site. The field trip will be after the Middle Gila Conservation
Partnership's next meeting. Meet at the Cottonwood Canyon Road and
State Highway 79 junction north of Florence. Trip Date: January 9,
2003. Time: 1:30 P.M.
Proposed Activity Description Information:
The competitive event involves participants maneuvering specially
equipped/modified 4WD vehicles through two designated obstacle
courses. Each course will have 7 obstacles. Each obstacle will be
laid out with flags or traffic cones the day before the event. The
obstacles will be over boulders and rock outcrops/ledges, and will be
designed to provide an extreme challenge of the driver's skill and
the vehicle's capabilities. The event will judged, timed and scored
at each of the obstacles according to the rules of the sport. The
event will be limited to 60 competitors. Each competitor will
consist of a vehicle, a driver and a spotter. The event is expected
to attract participants from throughout Arizona and from out of
State. Event staff at each obstacle will be provided by the
organizer for judging, scoring, safety, traffic and crowd control.
At a minimum, event staff will include 2 judges at each obstacle, 2
marshals per course, and 5 'greeters' at the entry points to the use
area along Cottonwood Canyon and Mineral Mountain roads. The minimum
event staff on-site will be 28.
Spectators will be charged a fee by the organizer to be on-site along
the obstacle courses. The event is expected to attract several
hundred spectators each day. Access to the obstacle course will be
controlled by the organizer during the days of the event. Access
through the area on the Cottonwood Canyon and Mineral Mountain roads
will remain open for general public use to access lands beyond the
use area. Escorts will be provided for traffic through the area.
Paying spectators will be identified by wristbands or other means.
Parking will be directed to designated areas in bare wash beds and
existing disturbed areas along the Cottonwood Canyon and Mineral
Mountain roads. Event parking will also be provided on private lands
near the event. Parking along the roads will not be allowed. Signs
will be posted by the organizer to inform the public of the event,
and to direct participants and spectators to the obstacle courses and
parking areas. Temporary flagging or signs may be used to block off
areas where no parking will be allowed to prevent interfering with
traffic on the access roads.
Portable toilets will be provided at convenient locations. The
number of toilets will be in accordance with industry standards based
on the number of people expected. Trash cans will be provided along
the course. The course will be cleaned up after the event. All
trash will be hauled away.
A food vendor may be provided during the event. The vendor location
will be identified and designated in advance.
Safety rules and equipment will be required by the organizer
according to the rules for the sport, including the use of helmets,
roll cages, driver-side nets, and vehicle fluid restrictors.
Vehicles will be inspected by event staff to ensure compliance with
vehicle requirements. A paramedic will be on-site during the event.
Sensitive land resource areas or sites will be flagged off to prevent
potential damage from vehicles and spectators during the event,
including petroglyph sites and areas where parking may be attracted
that would damage or destroy vegetation.
The event headquarters will located at a hotel in Apache Junction.
Access to the event use area is via the Mineral Mountain road from SR
60 east of Florence Junction, and via the Cottonwood Canyon road.

doesn't help you now...Dynatrac offers an optional dual compartment

Sounds to me like there is either something wrong with the locker, or
your transfer case was actually in 4wd when you thought it was in 2wd.
If there is no torque on the driveshaft and pinion gear, the locker

Hey all,
I just wanted to let you all know that I am going to by stepping away from the group for a while. I have had a few things come up in my life and they are going to be eating up my time and will require my full devotion. At this point I can't go into detail as to what it is.... But, it's nothing life threatening or anything of that magnitude. However, it will take me away from the trail and most anything to do with the sport. Thanks again for all your help over the past few months. See ya on the road.

Hi, I was wanting to go fourwheeling around Bartlett Lake off FR42,
does anyone know what kind of wheeling it would be? i.e. 3.5+,

there is a run on FR-42 Saturday. They are meeting at 1030 at the pay
station. Go to the website and find out the info. It is good whelling. Rated
a 3. Been there a few times and love it. Plus the play area around the Lake
itself. There is a lot of trails out there. None of them are rockcrawling I
don't think (could be wrong on that though).

I am no intention of making anyone feel left out. Many of us have been
heavily involved in this issue for quite a while and know the present issues
and past issues that need to be addressed. I am just trying to get the ball
rolling. Remember we only want 4 to 5 people to not overwhelm the TFO. We
want to try and resolve the problems not shove them down their throats.
That said
Neal Han**** has been very involved in this and had several conversations
at the Jamboree with Francisco that would be helpful at the meeting. He also
contacted United and BRC on this issue.
Stu Olson recently took a week of his own vacation to attend the Land
Managers meeting and is very familiar with the present personnel and

Both Nasser and Mike Wixom have been very involved from the start and would
represent us well.
We also need to hear if the people on the list are interested and

Darren,
I don't know. I have checked the locker's functionality and all works to
specs. I can lift the front end up on jacks and with the transmission in
neutral and the transfer case in 2wd I can spin one or the other tires.
When I turn the driveshaft by hand both tires spin the same direction.
BTW this is with the axel disconnect engaged.
Before putting in the locker in, when traveling on road the drive shaft
would not spin. Now, with the locker, the driveshaft spins full time.
Here is a question for someone. Why in 2wd and the axel disconnected
does the Jeep in tight turns jerk and lunge? When I coast the turn is
smooth but in gear I have to be careful. This did not happen with just
the rear locker or when the Jeep was open front and rear. Has anyone
else experienced this?

Sounds to me like there is either something wrong with the locker, or
your transfer case was actually in 4wd when you thought it was in 2wd.
If there is no torque on the driveshaft and pinion gear, the locker
should unlock around a turn and you should never hear chirping tires.

I've experienced the same problem with the Lock-Right in the front of my
Jeep.
It doesn't unlock like the Detroit Soft-Lock did I put in my previous Jeep.
This one chirps tires, binds up and when it does unlock it unlocks with a
bang... a bang so loud I though I blew an axle U-Joint. This is in 2WD with
the Hubs locked. I've only done it once - I was putting the Jeep on the
trailer so I had locked the hubs already and just pulled out of the drive
and down the street a bit (in 2WD) to turn around and load it on the
trailer. After that first time, I always just unlock a hub first.
IMO, the key is to put in a better locker.

Subject: [TR] Sunflower Mine Loop - Saturday, January 11, 2003
Hello All,
Kristilin Weiss is leading a Sunflower Mine Loop trail run on Saturday, January 11, 2003.
When: 9:30AM
Where: Meet in the lot at 87 and the Saguro Lake Turn-off
Rating: 3.5-
Length: All Day
CB Channel:
We never been on this trail---Shoul be exciting!
We plan to take a look-see at the mine and maybe hike around in the area as well.
BYO food &; H2o
See ya there
The Sunflower Mine Loop is a fun trail that offers a little something for everyone. It takes 3 – 4 hours to complete allowing for time to poke around and explore. The loop starts as an easy 2.5 trail that winds along a hillside and slowly descends into the canyon. After crossing a bridge you continue up the canyon until you arrive at the Sunflower Mine site. The mine’s processing building is still standing and is in decent shape. Stock vehicles can make this section of the loop easily, however the next section requires higher ground clearance and aggressive tires.
After leaving the mine the trails continues up a shady canyon becoming more tight and challenging as it runs across and up a rocky creek bed. The bed is usually dry but can be very slippery when water is running. After awhile you make a hard right turn up a steep rock wall obstacle and continue to climb a loose rocky road out of the canyon and into the pines and junipers. At the top the trail continues with some washed out sections, passes a couple of more mine shafts, and gradually becomes easier as you return to the loops starting point.
Remember to pack water, a lunch, and bring your camera.

Joey,
I believe the advantage comes in when the front is
locked and you need to make a tight turn. You can
disconnect without needing to shift out of 4LO (or

Brad

They were contacted, never heard the outcome, the day it happened
there was really no other choice but to go to a shop that would
help, which was done. As you said if you have a shop give you lousy
service you say so, and good service you say so. I have made
several posts about shops that have given good service, and in the
past even about 4 Wheelers. Let's just say this bad service hit a
REALLY bad nerve with me, not to say I may not give them a chance in
the future, but while they are generally good to work with they are
not perfect.

Comment Period: December 24, 2002 through January 21, 2003.
Location: Public land administered by the BLM along Cottonwood
Canyon, generally located in T3S R11E Secs. 4 and 5 of the Gila and
Salt River Principal Meridian, Pinal County, Arizona.

Sorry to hear about the trouble. I was going to go with the Tera60R

doesn't help you now...Dynatrac offers an optional dual compartment
housing. It has 2 fill holes. One in the normal location in the cover
and a second on the side up near the pinion.

Sounds to me like there is either something wrong with the locker, or
your transfer case was actually in 4wd when you thought it was in 2wd.
If there is no torque on the driveshaft and pinion gear, the locker
should unlock around a turn and you should never hear chirping tires.

Darren,
I don't know.

Subject: RE: [Tech] TJ - Locking diff question ???

Darren,
I don't know.
