Hi Chris,
If I get horrible service, I let people know... if I get outstanding
service, I let people know. I realize that you've had a bad experience at 4
Wheeler's Supply, but your case appears to be the exception and not the
rule. If you'd like to baseline what poor service is, ask around about
Fly-N-High or Desert Rat.
Oh... and one other thing; if you had bad service at 4 Wheeler's Supply,
just call and ask to talk to the owner Brian and he will make it right for
you, I guarantee it... try it, I think you might be happy with the results.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

Newbie here.
I realize the negative characteristics of a closed or locked differential on pavement, but if you were to put one in the front only, wouldn't it only effect you when you were actually in 4WD (ie. off pavement) since when in 2WD the front wheels just spin on their bearings?
Thanks for any help.

That is a good question. I am not positive on the characteristics of have a auto locker in a TJ. In my YJ the Lockrite is invisible on pavement in 2wd. I tested a few aspects of my locker when I first installed it. In the YJ there is an axel disconnect which I believe is the core reason as to why it is invisible. TJs do not have this. One thing I did was to reverse the vacuum so the axel was connected while in 2wd. The results were that the locker stayed engaged and driving while turning was very bad. The locker *locked* in a turn the Jeep wanted to go straight and the tires would slip on the pavement. I don't fully understand why because the locker is only supposed to engage when the drive shaft applies torque to the differential. I have also noted that when coasting during a turn while in 4wd the front stays locked while the rear Lockrite will disengage. However this may be just a characteristic of the Lockrite in the D30 front axel.

I too have had great service from 4 wheelers supply. But, a friend of mine
(who is a good guy) went in last week and got treated like crap. I told him
the same thing, call the owner or barry. They probably, like any other

Many of us run LockRites in the front (D30) axle of out TJ's.
As mentioned, the TJ's do not have locking/unlocking hubs.
The hubs and axles turn all the time. The driveshaft (in 2wd) only free
spins.
The LockRite is basically invisible when in 2wd. It is *NOT* locked at all.
The only way you'll know it's there is from a slight clicking sound heard
when turning.

My XJ is the same way. that clicking noise you hear is the locker
ratchetting to allow you to turn without dragging the inner tire. There are
a couple of factors that can effect this even in 2 wheel drive (slick
surfaces with a short wheel base, sharp turns into parking spaces etc). If
the locker doesnt have the right amount of force it can bind up before
disengaging. Just didnt want the guy to think that it was going to be
totally "invisible".

Just to further clarify this. In a TJ (non locking/unlocking hubs which turn

There is absolutly no steering issues, in 2 wd, like when it 4 wd etc.
Soooo, with the exception of some very light clicking noise, the LockRite in
a TJ is invisible when in 2 wd.

I have a 5spd 92 YJ that has stock 4WD/Transmission/Transfer Case.
What is the best way to convert my 4WD from vacume to cable. Can I get

is a kit, where is the best place to get one for a good price? Last, is
this something simple that I can do, or should it be done at a shop?

Fred,
I disagree. The Lockrite by default is locked. When torque is applied
via the driveshaft it becomes much harder to unlock. When in 2WD there
is no torque being applied so the locking and unlocking is invisible and
quiet. You can test this by putting jackstands under the front end and
spinning the tires by hand.
To further prove that the front end is locked by default take your Jeep
out on some slick wet ice. Leave it in 2WD and see what happens. You
will then find that the front end doesn't unlock because despite the
fact no torque is applied via the driveshaft there isn't enough traction
at the tires to cause it to unlock. This is why people in cold climates
don't run autolockers in the ice.
But I do agree that the process in our climate is completely invisible.

Scott K

While I'm sure there are some who have managed to rig up their own
cable set-up, the best way may be to buy a kit. Unfortuantely, the
kits are overpriced, IMO, as they run about $200. Unless you're
wanting to disconnect the passenger wheel manually while in 4WD,
there isn't much advantage to the cable set-up. A lot of people
complain about the vacuum set-up but it's been my experience that the
only problem you have is that the vacuum hoses dry out and crack
leaving you without vacuum and without 4WD. My original vacuum
harness lasted until my Jeep was about 9 years old. I then bought a
new harness for $33 and replaced the old one at which point I figure
I was good for another 9 years.
Another option is to pull out the vacuum stuff as well as the 2-piece
shaft and guides and install a solid 1-piece shaft out of an XJ.
That would make youe set-up equivalent to that of the TJ.

Thats basically what I was trying to say. Thanks.
I have the gen lock quick lock in front which is the same concept as the
lockrite. I have had this happen mostly when turning into parking spaces
that are on treated concrete (most mobil stations have a coating so that
they can easily pick up oil/gas spillage).

Thinking about it now, Scott is correct.
However, I've *NEVER* had any "symptoms" of it being locked, and I've driven
on the wettest and slickest of roads here, and on icy roads twice here in
Tucson.
Soooo, I still maintain, that for anything anyone is likely to see here,
it's invisible when in 2 wd, on a TJ ;)

They were contacted, never heard the outcome, the day it happened
there was really no other choice but to go to a shop that would
help, which was done. As you said if you have a shop give you lousy
service you say so, and good service you say so. I have made
several posts about shops that have given good service, and in the
past even about 4 Wheelers. Let's just say this bad service hit a
REALLY bad nerve with me, not to say I may not give them a chance in
the future, but while they are generally good to work with they are
not perfect.

I realize the negative characteristics of a closed or locked differential on pavement, but if you were to put one in the front only, wouldn't it only effect you when you were actually in 4WD (ie. off pavement) since when in 2WD the front wheels just spin on their bearings?

I think it makes sense for the ASA land use team (Sandee, Marty and

Just to further clarify this. In a TJ (non locking/unlocking hubs which turn
all the time), the LockRite is NOT "locked" when it 2 wd . It will only lock
up when torque is applied to the pinon. It doesn't "rachet" going around

There is absolutly no steering issues, in 2 wd, like when it 4 wd etc.
Soooo, with the exception of some very light clicking noise, the LockRite in
a TJ is invisible when in 2 wd.

Fred,
Regards,
Scott K

Subject: Re: YJ Experts; please speak up here...RE: 4WD Question
