I'm running an RE 4.5 Long Arm and I've been feeling a slight "clunk" when shifting since Sunday. No wheeling trips since the weekend prior and then it was pretty mild. When I would push in the clutch, shift then let the clutch out, I could feel something in the rear shift and I'd hear a "clunk" noise. The jeep makes noises so I let it be until today.

I got home early today an decided to crawl under there and take a look. I found that my driver side rear upper control arm bolt sheared off and only about 2mm of it was left in the joint. I removed the bolt and went to ACE and replaced all 4 upper control arm bolts with the grade 10 bolts they sell along with buying two spares.

I maintain my rig pretty well an stay up on greasing the all the zerks and my pulling my driveshaft and lubricating it. My point is, even with my mildly wheeled rig, I'll be getting under there at least once a week now and make sure every thing is OK.

I too need to be preventive on the maintenance on my rig. I'm wheeling this weekend and am gonna give it a good look over this Friday.

If you don't give it a good look over before you go, you can now be rest assured something is going to break just because you said that.

We all get lax in this, and thank God it hasn't bit anyone yet. When you get under there, put a wrench on each joint and make sure it's tight. Shake your
shocks, arms, exhaust and see if there's any slack in any of it. :D

I'm not sure if the RE long-arm bushings have the same trouble as the short-arm bushings, but give the rear frame-side bushings a look. Mine are trashed and have been causing a nasty thumping for a while now. I keep putting off replacing them because I'm trying to hold off until I can just throw some long-arms under there.

Is this thumping while driving? I don't think I have any issues with mine. But I'll inspect them on Friday.

Mine will do it when letting out the clutch unless I'm real easy on it, and also sometimes if I just hit the gas to accelerate quickly while it's already in gear, or right as I let off the gas if I was getting on it hard. Basically any time when the rear axle is trying to rotate up/down. I don't notice it when I'm just rolling or driving at a constant pace, even on bumpy roads.
