At the very top of the first fall on Annhialator, fronts up and pulling me over......I hear the dreaded BOOM!

I am dropping a few grand on my stretch, the shafts are under warranty and they will have to do for about 6 more months.....or I get a new rear axle.;)

Do you think this was caused from one obstacle, collective abuse, to much tire or...?

Were you still rolling after the snap or did the bearing failure cause the shaft to leave the housing?

I know exactly why it broke.............it was too small!

One obstacle......maybe. Look at the pics where almost all the weight of the Jeep is on that back tire, and I was climbing the fall.
Collective abuse......probably not. I checked the axle shafts about 3 weeks ago, and they were fine.
Too much tire......maybe. 37" stickies on an Alloy USA 30 spline.

Bearing failure happened after the shaft snapped. We pulled the shaft, but could not get the stub out of the carrier and I did not want to totally break down the rear end, so we put it back together and I drove out of the trail in 3 wheel drive. With only the outer bearing for support, the shaft flopped around inside the tube, damaging the bearing.

Well you are in luck Lance my friend. I have a whole set of stock axles, 4.10 r/p and carriers for a D-30 and D-35, front and rear for you sitting on the shelf in my garage. I will even throw in the Lockright....;):p When you are ready to "step up" to these then.. No, wait...damn :D j/k

I know D44's fail on occasion, but yours is the first I've seen with the bearing toasted like that and I wondered if that was normal. How far do you think you drove on it like that? How did the inner axle tube fare? I'm curious as I'd like to know how far I could expect to get in a similar situation.

I got about 200-300 yds. Just far enough to find a good spot to get the truck and trailer back to it. Inner axle tube is fine, I drove real slow.

So if the rear axle breaks in a D44, it is NOT advisable to drive on it? I don't mean more than a few miles.
Obviously, the correct solution is to pull your spare and swap it if that is an option or like in your case, go and grab the trailer.

Cliff (Blkruby) snapped a shaft in squeeze a while back. Drove it out. Wonder if he drove the whole way or limped back to the wash? Pretty sure they went all the way back to the trailer. at least a couple miles.

thats a good effot! Thort you would of done the ring and pinnon before doing a cromo axle! I blew my rear 44 a few monts back so now got a 35 spline 9inch, solved the problem. never fun when you here that bang come from the rear! lol

Lance, why were you on the bypass?:jester: I think Barry has the right idea!

Heck, I think the bypass is up the wall, way easier than the original route where you had to turn hard right at the top

I saw a juggy YJ make that climb. What happened? :D
Dude, I give you serious props for driving that and it looks like you'd of made it it the shaft didn't let go. You've got to be one of the few (very few) stock wb / full tub guys trying that nonsense.

I can take those tires off your hands, so you dont break anymore. My ****ty tires are the reason my d30 has a chance.

Thanks for the response and pics. Was looking at the alloys in a 44 for my yj. Now I might re-think things. Last question are you locked or running a spool?

not taking anything away from Lance cuz he does get it with the little jeep, but that obstical is actually easier with a stock wb jeep and have seen many cj5 taking that line and actually making it easier that yjs or at least mine.

Which wall? The one in front of him just before he made the 90º hard right turn or the wall in the very first pic before he made the left turn up the chute?
If you're talking about the wall in the very first pic, YOU ARE NUTS if you think that's the bypass!! :) :D (Though it wouldn't surprise me considering some of the absolutely insane stuff you've climbed now).

Hey Sean!
Yep same wall. I have a heck of a time in the wedge area, kinda a double wammy when it is wet. Hope things are going well, we need to get out and wheel, still want to do the Sedona run with you some time.

I just went up there about 2 weeks ago and ran Broken Arrow for the first time. Really pretty trail. Had a great time. I totally forgot about you saying you'd go. I suck. Sorry man.
So, back to Annihilator....are you saying it's easier for you to climb that insanely steep wall than it is to go up the normal way? Holy ****e man, I have teeny tiny balls compared to you.

Here are some pics from 2004. You can see how the chute has changed quite a bit. Same for the rigs. Barry is driving "Cricket". Bob Pelatt is driving a 6000# + behemoth with 116" WB and 42's. "Skinney" was the second known person to drive the wall line, first was Tracy.

wall line has changed quite a bit. I feel it is worst to a degree due to an ugly rock that fell to the bottem won't let you back up without tearing up a tire possibly, takes about the same amount of bump to get it up.
thanks craig for the cricket pics, back then with the 1/4 elip

Looks the same except for a couple boulders that have fallen out creating some notches.

Ummm....I didn't know the boulders "fell" out. And it looks like the first couple pics the trail was stacked a LOT! Or were they natural, and people have just pulled them out now?

Stacked. I helped open the trail years back.....it wasn't nearly that bad at first.....though the second fall had some "redesign" work to make it doable.
Looks like it returned to what it should have been.

Yeah, it was awesome. Not a single rock in the chute at all.
