I'm on Kauai (in Hawaii) for a few days and rented a stock JK. It doesn't have lockers or anything, but it goes into 4-lo. I'd like to find some fairly mild trails here to checkout some of the backcountry. Have any of you guys been here before and know any places to wheel?

In all my trips there it was always to Honolulu. Wanting to get some wheeling in and not knowing for sure where to go, I headed out on the main hwy, northeast. After sometime the road became quite desolate. Finally it just died and that was where the 4x4 road began. I did that several times but never did make it completely around the Island, my rent-a-jeep didn't have it I guess.
That said if I were you and would do same, the worst you can do is stumble upon a film crew making a movie..."Hot Harley Babes". I could tell I wasn't real welcome, so I didn't stay long.

You'd want to be extremely careful off road, as the rental company will not cover any damage, and if the local fuzz catches you, it;ss be hula late nite.
I have a joint on north shore and off roading is frowned on by tourist big time, just be careful or take a local fella.
On the way to north shore are a lot of turnoffs towards the peaks, if raining forget it, turns into a redclay bog, it'll stain everything you own.
Have fun and you can always claim stupidity to the cops.

Try these guys. I was not able to hook up with them when I was there two-three weeks ago but was also not on that island but there are some posters that are.
Don,
I also took that road to the end on the north side going west and they have it blocked off with big boulders. I did see tracks but I'm going to assume that we technically aren't allowed to drive past the boulders... then again, there were no signs.

I don't think that there is much in the way of offroading in Kauai. My wife and I spent 16 days there a couple of years ago and hiked pretty much the whole island. There are some roads back to the cane fields that can turn into pretty nasty mud bogs if its been raining but I didn't see or hear of any 4X4 trails. The other thing to look out for in the back country of Kauai is the younger males! We ran in to a couple of groups of guys around 18 to 24 that had serious attitudes about non locals being in the backcountry. Luckily I was able difuse the situations but I was a little worried at least twice. Its a beautiful Island. I hope you have a great vacation.

We honeymooned in Hawaii long ago. We spent 5 days on Kauia (by far the best of the islands) and rented a TJ. We stopped at the Forestry Office in Lihue and picked up some topos of the island which show all kinds of Jeep trails.
We did some mild wheeling on some power lines above Wailua. Follow the Wailua river inland and it'll lead you into the forest to the power lines.
Another cool spot is at the top of the Waemea Canyon in Kokee State Park. Drive all the way to the top to where the visitor center buildings are. Pass them and follow the dirt roads into the forest and there are tons of neat trails (pretty mild) that weave all through the area. We drove as far and high in elevation as we could, then we hiked to the tallest spot on the island.
The view isn't very good, though, as the top of the island is almost always in the clouds as the islands form their own weather and it's almost always raining at the very top.
The only things we ran into which had attitudes were the wild boars and the chickens. Have fun, don't get into any trouble and take pics!!!

Thanks for the info guys. I think we are going to head up the Waimea Canyon road on Monday and checkout the surroundings. We just got back from a booze cruise along the Na Pali coast. We could see some of the spots reachable along the canyon. Also, a north shore beach that had some vehicles on it - so I'm sure it's reachable. Also, might try to find that power line road.

Be careful when you go out into the backcountry there. There is a LOT of illegal "pakalolo" fields(marijuana), and the guys that tend them do not take trespassers lightly. I have been to Kauai 7 times, and we rented dirtbikes twice. We were warned about this from the rental shops. We never saw any, but Hawaii's #1 import(illegal, but still more $$$) is marijuana, not sugar, pinapple, or any other legal export. Have fun Jaime.

Did some light wheeling today. Went down the Makaha Ridge road (off of the Waimea Canyon Rd). There are several dirt roads within the state park there. They are a little muddy and rutted, but nothing too intense. We had a great time, and the scenery was awesome. Thanks for the tips guys.

I was there teaching a class a couple of years ago and only had time to take one day and drive all the way around the island. The North shore is neat!:D
Also flew through there in 1967 headed to SEA, but didn't get out of the base.

Jamie,
When my wife and I were there on our honeymmon a few years back I found some pretty cool back forest roads to explore. I dont remember the name of the road but it is a main road of the highway that you take to get to the fern grotto, just keep going up the hill through the residential neighborhood and it will turn into a forrest road, just pay attention to the turns you make and be carefull, lots of mud and water. I came real close to buying the rental XJ we where in after that trip exploring :D But luckily after lots of throttle and wheel spin the tires got enough traction to get back up the hill.
