I have the chance to pick up a 318 block fairly cheap. I currently have a 99 TJ. If I was to build this block into an engine, will it bolt in my Jeep? And how difficult would it be? What books should I pick up first, etc. I know this is a question with a million answers. I figured if it will fit, this would be a great way for me to do something I've always wanted to do and a chance to learn more (plus buy more tools :)

Any advice is appreciated.

Doing a 5.2L swap on the CJ.

Here is an article on the TJ. Hope this helps

Check out Novack online.

If I remember correctly the swap you are talking about can be done, but no mater how "cheap" the 318 is you will usually save money by going with a Chevy motor instead.

Really? You think a Chevy motor would be better? Which one, 350? I know there is thousand of parts for the 350. Would a chevy motor bolt up to my tranny or would I need to replace that also?

Contact Novack online or call them as to what bolts up or needs adaptors. If there is no adaptor the swap is not worth the time and money per Novack.

There are many choices as to chevy engines and depending on what your planned use it maybe a V-6 would be a better choice. Once you get to the power level you need given the weight of your vehicle and your gearing after that it is just show. Bigger and stronger engine equals more heat in general and more stress on the parts that weren't make to take the power.

Per Novack the chevy 6's and 8's are considered by them to be a better choice for a jeep conversion even better than a AMC or Dodge engine that might seem a better choice as AMC did and now Dodge does own jeep.

In general chevy engines and parts are easier to find and cheaper, adaptors are easier to find, weight less than other choices, fit better in Jeep engine compartments, and run cooler.

I started reading Novak...

I think you are right about rebuilding a 6 vs. building an 8. I would still like to build a complete engine from scratch. I guess I will start looking for a new 6 block and go from there.

Thanks again for the advice,
Dave

if this Jeep is going to be street driven and subject to emissions, you will need to have a block from a '99 or newer. For all engine swaps the engine you are installing has to be the same year or newer than the vehicle you are putting it in. Also since the vehicle is '99 it means what ever you put in has to be ODBII compliant.
