I'm trying to replace the front wheel bearings on my 1980 cj5. i cant get the locknut off, because of the gears(spindle shaft?) are in the way. how do I get it off do i need a special tool? I've tried prying it with a screw driver and hitting it with a hammer and wedge and no luck.http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn137/urbanwarfare86/crap041.jpg

1980 CJ, assuming 6 bolt hubs:
remove outer allen screws
pull selector off
remove snap ring from axle
remove 6 hub bolts (9/16)
remove hub body
use squared chisel to push lockwasher tab away from nut
use special stamped socket to remove outer nut
remove lockwasher
inner nut should be just barely tighter than finger tight
remove nut

hub assembly should pull off

I've gotten it all off except the spindle nuts. I have the special socket to losen them, i asume the part in front of it is fused together, do you know where i can gat another spindle shaft for cheep?

You should be able to push the driving hub( gear looking thing) in towards the frame a little and see a snap ring that needs to be removed before the driving hub can be removed off the splined part of the axle shaft. How did you remove the wheel hub without having this done first, did your outer bearing come apart.

As far as I can tell the snap ring is gone. The bearings were toast, the bearing carrier was completly gone all that was left was a few bearings, even the seal is chewed up. I put my feet up against the leaf springs and just gave it a few good tugs

Does the driving hub have any play ( slide in and out a little) or does it feel solid on the axle shaft. If it feels solid then it probably welded itself onto the shaft. Sometimes if you have a torch you could heat it up and free it. I would try tapping on it to push it in. Make sure the nut is not against it to stop it from moving in. Instead of a snap ring it could be a circlip that is only a thin metal wire like clip that you would need a little pick to pry it out of the groove on the axle shaft. Good luck.

processing
from looks of pics, snap ring is wasted onto splines of axle (spines should go all the way out)
see if can tighten bearing lock nut a little (to create play between body/remains of snap ring)
if does not result in play , BFH and chisel on outer part of axle (straight down) to split remains of snap ring
BFH and chisel anywhere you can on drive gear of hub (assembly from outer bearing lock nut out) and pound outwards to push off axle stub

adem is probably your best alternative as your spindle, hub, and axle are probably toast
