Elvis sounds good, I've been wanting to run that trail. When, where are you meeting, Price Rd? Dan

actually we are meeting on the pipeline rd north of cotonwood canyon rd then running down to price either by box canyon or 79 we havent decided. we are staging at 8:30 and roll out at 8:45. btw we are camping out there. this is an official event so waivers need to be signed, tech inspection done, and no alcohol on the trail. if this doesn't work pm me ill run ya thru some time

I'm still game to go with you. I'm not familiar with Pipeline rd. How do I get there from the 79/Cottonwood Canyon rd intersection? How many vehicles are you expecting in your group?

Ken,
From the TTORA site:

Go down Cottonwood Canyon Rd about 1/3rd of a mile to the gas pipeline road and veer left. Go until you see a bunch of tents/campers/rvs on your left. As you turn in we will have our area set up roughly towards the 2 o'clock direction back off the road.

We will be where the green dot is, the red is where the rest of the people will be, and the smartest ones will be somewhere in the yellow area LOL.

HTH,
Sean

PS. I'll be out there too...but I'm planning to run H2H, Overdose, Bad Medicine, etc. Maybe we'll bump into ya! :) Have fun.

Thanks, Sean. I found the trails listed on the site, but the map was missing. I'll plan to be over there by 8:30 to sign in. I'll stick to Elvis, though, that's more my speed right now. Hope they don't mind many Jeeps along:)

There's a thread on TTORAs site saying they won't mind. Expect good natured ribbing. Give as good as you get. ;)

Have fun and hopefully I'll see ya tomorrow. :)

I decided to go out to meet up with the TORRA bunch at AZRocks? to run with them on Saturday. I met a couple of guys from AZVJC, Kend and RockFinder and were wanting to run Elvis. I walked around the campsite and found out which group was supposed to run Elvis and by the time I walked back to the other side of the camp ground to get my jeep, they were rolling out. I followed them up to about the turn off to Upper WP when they finally stopped, that’s when I found out that this group was doing Coke Ovens. So I headed back to the Camp Ground and figured I’d be able to catch up with the Elvis group if I just headed straight to Price road. I wasn’t sure of the turn off to Elvis but decided to head onward as long as the trail wasn’t too difficult. I must have turned off too soon because I was soon up on a ridge line and my GPS was showing Sandman trail I believe. The trail kept climbing up and it sure provided for a great view of the trails looking from the West side to the East. I ran up onto a group of 14 quads, and only one of them knew the trails, and even being the leader he didn’t know where Elvis was. They probably thought I was deranged and looking for Mr. Presley or something. They didn’t seem too accommodating and when they closed a gate just ahead of me I figured it was time to go my separate way, the tail gunner closing the gate said a jeep probably couldn’t get to the top of the ridge anyway. I went back to the last turn off I’d past heading east again, had to go through a closed gate and eventually made a long gradual loop and climbed to the top of the next ridge and came back up on the quads. At least this time the trail was wide enough for me to get by them, I talked to the leader for a while and we could see a couple of buggy’s down in a creek bed way down below. The quad group leader said a Toyota had broken down there the day before. One of the TORRA guys I was with earlier said he had broken down in Elvis the day before so that must have been the trail. From there I headed on to the Northeast, while the quads were heading back down into Box and out to Price. I decided to stay up on the ridge and followed the trail to the highest point thinking I could follow it through to the North and link back up to Cottonwood. The last two hills were pretty brutal (man what a pucker factor climb that was) I would compare the incline to the worst of Butcher Jones and three times as long. The only salvation was the hard rock, and then at the top, a dead end, it was a great view though that I hadn’t seen before so I’m glad I did it but felt pretty stupid for going it alone. It was one of those cases where once you commit; you’ve got to push it through to the top. I went back down the trail to the last turn off I had passed and took the next trail heading east until I could see the first major obstacle coming into Box from the North. I could see a lot of Toyota’s and quads piling up there and I realized that I must have crossed Box Canyon and was now on the opposite side looking to the West. I followed the trail back down into the canyon and ran into the original group who were supposed to do Elvis. Hell by then I had two hours of wheeling in and they were just getting started. I decided to make a u-turn and follow them since I hadn’t had enough yet. They had been held up at the camp for a broke rig and got a late start. There were about 10 Toyota’s plus RockFinder, Steve in a CJ and I. They had changed their minds and were going to run Martinez Canyon loop and I decided to go with them since it was only about 11:00 by then. From there we really had a blast, only down side was at the first major obstacle at the Martinez mill, there were probably 25 rigs backed up. A bunch of quads were there and decided not to run the loop and were trying to get out, four Bronco’s trying to get back out, us trying to get through, and another bunch of TORRA guys we had just passed at Martinez Cabin planning on following us through. You can imagine the mess, but oh what a show on the obstacles there. Everyone was being towed over, rockfinder and I took the bypass to the right although I would still consider the “bypass” as the second most difficult obstacle on the trail. We both made it through without needing to be strapped, and many of the TORRA group decided to follow us after the pile up on the line to the left. I just wanted to tell SeanK, that the group leader (T-Bob), said to tell you that AZVJC was well represented. What a blast we had with those guys, nobody broke, only rockfinder got sideways down the luge, bent his left front wheel, lost the bead midway through and took a bit to get him fixed and running again. Just before that, one of the TORRA guys wasn’t paying attention and his left front tire went into a washout and nearly over the edge, he was hanging there praying for a while. It was one of the best runs I’ve had it all turned out for the best.

Looks (and sounds) like you had a good time.

I had a decent time, minus my flop on Highway to Hell. Ran that in 1.5 hours and then Bad Medicine.

Glad you had fun and were a good rep for VJC. :)
