What type of antenna does everyone run? I use an MJF magnet mount 144/440 dual band right now but would rather switch the something permenant.

Anybody have some good experiences with the Comet or Larson dual band lines?

I have had good luck with both of those and with Diamond.
I have a diamond dual bander NMO mounted to the tailgate of the wrangler.

On my XJ, a hole in the roof baby!

I've got a Comet dual-band antenna on the tailgate, just picked up the mount a couple of weeks ago. I did have a window-mount unit but it got whacked one too many times by the trees so I pulled this one out of storage. Hopefully it's more flexible :)

I know quite a few people that have THIS (http://www.rfparts.com/diamond/nr770hnmo.html)antenna.

I have the black version and it does very well on a mag mount. I'm working on getting it permanantly mouted.

X2. I have a mag mount on the truck and permanent mount on the XJ (center of roof). I'm going to see if I can find a shorter antenna for the XJ while wheeling and carry the 770 in case of emergency. The overhead branches do a number on non-flexible antennas. As for RX/TX is has worked great. Will be working on putting a permanent on the truck.

Rich,
I recently replaced my Comet 5' dual band. It was working well but it got smacked hard on one trip and basically fell apart right at the center load.
I picked the Diamond NR770HB Dualband Mobile (black). Virgil mentions an NR770HNMO Dualband Mobile in his post. Same antenna, different connector. One has the NMO connector, the other uses UHF connector. I have both antennas. The NMO is on a mag mount that I used on my pickup. Since the Jeep doesn't have much metal area for a mag mount, I went with the other.
So far very happy with it. The antenna is hard mounted to the spare tire carrier using a mount made by AZ Rocky Road in Chandler. Easy to install, no-drill mount.

Antenna cable that I use is the Diamond C213 13.5 foot UHF base connector with PL259 adapter. Got it from Ham Radio Outlet over by Devry. It has a weather cap to protect the connector for when you remove the antenna. The cable is RG316 Teflon Coax (small/skinny) so it's easy to pass thru tight areas. Power rating is 350 watts.
A little pricey but so far I'm impressed with the performance.
Hope that helps

I use a flexible Comet SBB-1NMO mounted in the center of the hardtop, with a larger antenna held in reserve. I have lots of 3" and 1" copper tape if anyone wants to make a groundplane on the fiberglass.

If you get the Larsen 2/70 you can install a shock spring in it. Had one with the spring installed on the top of my XJ for about 5 years now without an issue. If you do this you don't need to go to a 19" just to wheel.
