i just moved here from VA and need to figure out what i'm going to need to do to get my jeep legal enough to drive once in a while.
i know i need to switch the title over, already did that with our other car and i dont see that being a problem, but the emmisions could be. i have a 78ish type motor setup. A 350 with No emmisions equipment other the mufflers on my duel exhaust. The jeep body and frame are 89 but thats the only jeep parts on it. Does it have to have certain equipment or just pass a sniffer or is there some way to get around it.
On top of that in VA it was lifted to high and tires stuck out to far but i dont think AZ has those type laws. I would only drive it once and a while and if needed to any close trails.
So what do i have to look forward to?
thanks for any help

I know that you do not need mufflers. Just have pipe out for them to hook up too. I just took my XJ thru with no muffler and passed. Thats all I know.

What's the 78ish type motor? I've been told they do an under hood visual and will fail it if it doesn't match their books show for the year vehicle.
I've got a 79 CJ which I still register in Oregon. The original emissions stuff is long gone, but I've got a Howell EFI kit on it and it which should pass emissions (with the w/ under hood schematic sticker) if I ever decide to register it here.

well i live in goodyear, i might be able to keep it registered in va or NC but i doubt it, i just put the motor together i'm guessing the block is 78 cause thats the year i usually find my parts.
if they look under the hood it definetly wont match there books being that its a chvy motor in a jeep
where is pinal county and do i have to live there to get their emmision test

Yes, you need to live in the area you are getting you emissions done. Once you get past emissions, I can hook you up with my parents office, it is the same stuff DMV does, but no wait time. You do need to pass emissions though, and I can't pull any strings, just save you time ;] If you have other questions about it though I can ask them :O

most of the time the emissions test will include a drive test on the dyno(easy way out is to have a full time tcase in it then all they do is an idle test) the underhood inspection is to see that all the factory emissions equip is there and vac hoses are in place. they also do a purge system test to check for leaks. and they might check underneath for the presence of a cat converter seeing as it is required on an 89 yj. then if the dmv decides to do a more in-depth inspection then the motor issues will surface. good luck you might be better off making it a trail only rig.

Also the law about engine swaps says that the engine has to be the same or newer than the vehicle it is going in. So in your case the stamped number on the block needs to say that it was from an '89 or newer vehicle. (right off hand I don't remember if the stamped number is on the odd or even bank, but it is on the front edge right in front of the head on the deck). I had to go thru this when I registered my '70 chevelle after its build after buying it as title only.
One way that you may be able to get around all of that nonsense is going the route of recreational vehicle just like the sandrails and what-not that have plates and tags.

I never had a problem smogging my 72 Commando with a Cadillac big block in it! I thought they would make a big deal about it but it never came up.
