View Full Version : Another insurance question...

After reading the thread on Collector's insurance, I started thinking about insurance for my jeep. Currently, it has full coverage from Geico ( who I am NOT very fond of ). :mickey:

They seem to have a disclaimer that they don't cover "offroad" vehicles. Also, they want to know of any "customizations" that have been performed which they then run past underwriting. Too many of these customizations and you become an "offroad" vehicle. :skull:

I checked for insurance threads on the board but didn't see anything in particular that fit. What is the best approach to keeping your jeep insured in case of an accident or having it stolen AND still being able to mod it for the trail.

Thanks in advance.

Scott

I have The Hartford. Much cheaper than Geico and they have never hassled me on mods. I've replaced a couple of windshields and the rates did not go up, either.

IMHO / experience, insurance is only as good as the person who sells/services (agent or self service internnet)

not familiar with new off road limitations from geico, but in my experience stuff like that is nothing more than threats. best of my experience: insurance covers for actual cost value (what you could have sold for as private party)

Underwriting can prevent from writing policy on modified (lifted, engine change, steering mod etc), but 90 days (best of my memory) later policy cannot be cancelled (couple of extreme exceptions, ie DUI, other felonies, misrepresentation (hard to prove)). Even Hartford (wrote for them for short time) has those SAME exceptions, agent just chose to "over look"

Information above is not meant to advise (disclaimer):aagh::aagh:

If your military or have parents that are or retired see about getting USAA they cover all of it, with out the boosted price, the last one I had Farmers said they would cover for $1000 deductible but they would not cover any of the mods or the suspension work. WTF Checked with USAA all covered they do ask that you show them the recipts if something happens.

Scott,

I have Custom insurance through American Family on all of my vehicles.
This covers all upgrades and modifications, Including Labor to replace said components. If you want the number to my agent let me know. He is a Jeeper and knows the business.. So you will get what you pay for when it comes to the coverage..

Dave,

Could you email me the information. I am going to look at all options. We had 21st Century and they were great until our son turned 16 and started to drive. They keep their rates low by only insuring very low risk groups which obviously doesn't apply to teenage males. Now Geico is getting pissy about the jeep.

Thanks to everyone for your leads! I will start calling around.

read my post: binding generally (yes, if you know how there are ways to get around underwriting) is determined by AGENT (Not the company)

Farmer's classic policies are only available with 250 or 500 deductible

ALL (yes even USAA and AMFam) companies have underwriting guidlines which are suposed to block coverage for height/steering/HP modified vehicles ); just because aget wrote, does not mean is following company guidelines. Just because one AM FAM or Farmers or ACME agent issued a policy for modified vehicle (ie Jeep), does NOT mean other agent will (ALL are INDEPENDANT CONTRACTORS)

Final note: Just because you insure vehicle for $20,000 (or $20,000,000) does NOT mean that is what policy will pay.... policy will pay ACV... what YOU can prove vehicle would sell for. Just because some idiot or two has his 73 CJ5 advertised for $37,000 does NOT mean it is worth that. Just because you have $40,000 in recepts, your vehicle is not worth $40,000 (if I remember correctly cost to build $13,000 Ford Taurus with retail parts is over $80k....if you spent that much building one, what do you think you could get (even if you had $80k in receipts). Paper is full of Jeeps that people claim to have "invested" (bought Enron too?) $40k in Jeep.

Side note: I know someone :whistling: who was just paid over $15K for a 99 TJ with 98k miles on it. Insurance company originally offered a little under 10K based on non modified comps... someone :whistling: provided a plethora of comps (which had actually sold), insurance company (Farmers in this case, but someone :whistling: has done same with other companies adjusters as well )mailed check next day.

Most every policy will pay ACV (including adjustment for upgrades) for your vehicle... just be ready to be able to proove value.

BTW: Farmer's agency owner 12 years, Independant (geico, nationwide , 15 other companies) 3 years, little under year AmFam producer, VERY familiar with USAA ( their CServ reps are 32k per year "agents" licensed for over 10 states). What someone tells you on phone is not worth CRAP in court.... GET IT IN WRITING

disclaimer:aagh::aagh::aagh:: all of above is from best of my knowlege, and not intended to professionally advise; For specifics about your policy consult with your agent:osama:

Companies with agents (ie farmers, amfam allstate etc) agent independant contractor (agent works for YOU), company is only as good as your agent (with amfam/farmers etc and dont like your agent? find a new one and have your policies changed)

Companies without agents (geico, usaa, etc): person who (dis) serves you works for, gets paid by the company PERIOD

For normal insurance, I am BIG believer in $1000 ded (cars, house etc) ANYWAY.... I buy insurance for what I cannot replace: ME!!!! High liability coverage so I can buy hih UM/UIM coverage (covers me for pain/suffering/disability caused by Un/under insured motorist)
7 of 11 years my agency had higher UM/UIM payments than EVERYTHING (cars, house, commercial, life) COMBINED

just about ANY company: 1990 or newer vehicle: for about the same price for 15/30/10 15/30,15/30 with 500/500 comp/collision, you can buy 50/100/50, 50/100,50/100 with 1000/100 comp collision

what's more important: $500 coverage for your car or extra $35,000 coverage for you and your family in your or anyone elses car ?

Other than I got more coverage for a better price than the other company was giving my wife and I for both vehicles. It came down to why pay a higher price for less coverage; I don’t remember my coverage off hand.

I have also had some bad deals with the previous company and they way the handled the issue that made me leave them and since I already had a policy with USAA when I switched over it was a better over all deal, so with the money I saved I was able to add a few other perks.

most lending sources wont let you have a 1000 dollar deductible though so that throws that out the window except for the people who have their vehicles paid off

Lienholders are afraid you will end up upside-down on your loan and on hook for large deductible.

Many companies (Farmers) have a clause (look on back of face sheet) to the effect "applicable for lienholder only... deductible for comprehensive / collision shall not exceed $500"

Only comes into play if you are Upside down in your financing (not upside-down in your Jeep:aagh:)
What this means is if you total carand ACV is less than loan (and you do not pay difference)
Bank will reposess vehicle (might just be on paper)
insurance company will settle claim with lienholder subject to $500 deductible (no matter what you have)

The clause does NOTHING for you other than giving you the legal ability to choose whatever deductible you want.

Odly enough, from my experience virtually NOONE knows about this clause. I went to bat for several insureds with their finance companies and found that almost always only supervisors knew about clause (and ALWAYS approved)

DON'T JUST LISTEN TO YOUR IDOT AGENT/CSERV IDIOT/LIENHOLDER COMPANY IDIOT....
READ YOUR POLICY!!!!!
