View Full Version : Who tried to warranty a rubicon ?

Starting to read stuff about blown lockers etc. in rubicons and it seems that it happens. So my question is: Who has warrantied anything on a jeep especially a rubicon. Do they give you a hard time? What modifications do they give you a hard time about? What dealers is the best to work with? I haven't had to try yet, but I want to know what to expect if I have problems. Do they actually give you a hard time for off roading? Got a "free" extended warranty and want to make sure I can use it someday:)

While I still had bumper to bumper I took my 05 rubicon unlimited in for a squeaking noise, after they changed pretty much EVERYTHING in the front driveline they gave it back to me still "broke". I found what the noise was, took it back to them and they fixed it no questions asked. The mods on the jeep was 4.5 RE lift on 33's. My service writer defined the "fine print" on the warranties...If the repair being done is a direct result of the lift they will not cover it. Hopefully that helps.

The potential problems are:
Losing 1/2 circle clips and wrecking a U-joint
With larger tires (35's) the rear locker will not last as long as it should
Front drive shaft seal gets dried out and you hear the angry sparrows
Tips for dealer warranty:
Wash jeep (do not bring in ditrly or muddy and expect warranty work)
Repaint undercarrage from time to time and check for bent CA mounts/cracked welds
Bring to Jeep friendly dealership
Do not add a supercharger
Do not lift over 4"
Do not add a hemi!
And who sells FREE warranties?

I got mine after a debacle oil change that the tech forgot to add oil and was drivin from service bay to customer pickup with zero oil pressure. This was after 2nd "free" oil change at 6K. I'm not sure how someone could have missed the bell, light, oil pressure guage and sound, but they did. Got a letter and extended warranty, which I hope is not worthless. So what about the LCA mounts? I got some rash on them. Who is the friendliest dealer? Are 35's frowned upon? For 4" lift does body count?
Thanks for the info

There is no tire size limitation on your warranty, However if it is proven that they caused Said damage you could be out of luck on said repair.
As far as Most friendly jeep dealer......Hmm

I'm not sure how they could "prove" the tire caused failure but does not suprise me. I bought mine at airpark and unfortunately thats where I got my "special" oil change, so that kinda put me off. So what is this I hear about "offroad abuse" being used to deny claims? If I have a bent/rashed CA mount are they going to deny me?
Thanks this has been bothering me. Warranty was the main reason I bought new(and probably last time:aagh:)

Well, warranty is nice and it does cause you to build on the mild side until it is gone. There is such a gray area on Jeeps and warranties Vs Mods and abuse. Each situation is different and each dealer addresses them different too. Ultimatley its up to chyrsler NOT the dealer to denie a warranty claim.
Sorry to hear you had a bad experince, I am sure that tech lost his job that day

So in your experience how does airpark handle them? Fair?

I had all my work done at power dodge at I17 and bell road
Bill Luke fixed-
rear main seal
front axles inner seals
both front axles at different times
two front driveshafts due to angry sparrows
This was all while running a 3" lift and coming into the shop with the axles already sitting in the heep and not in the axle and the locker mod.
They laughed out loud when I tried to get them to replace the rear locker. This was after gears and putting on a 6"LA and gears in the axles. Oh well, when they get used they break.
That's been my experience.

Huck, were the front shafts broken? How many miles? I was told by sponsors that gears would not void, but I guess that is not the case. I guess staying with a short arm is a good idea as well. Sounds like if they replaced broken fron shafts thats a good start. What size tires were you running?
Thanks
Both shafts broke at different times. As Jason mentioned above, the factory axles have a tendency to spin or spit their ujoint bearing caps. Once that occurs, failure is quick to come. I popped one on LT, throwing glowing metal at Joe Daro, years ago. Some time later, I noticed that I lost a cap prior to a run at FJ, during a pre-run inspection. I swapped in a buddy's spare axle and wheeled for the day. That cap was lost while driving the daily commute. Both of those went out with 33's on the Heep. I'm now running 35's, with 37's to come shortly. I've been running Alloy USA shafts, ever since, without issue. I recently went with the 30 spline outer upgrade to get ready for running 37's. I couldn't tell you the miles that were on the Heep today, but I do have it written down in my log book. They were early on, somewhere between 18-28K, I believe.
Regarding the gears, stepping up the leverage/forces placed upon the rear axles and locker due to steeper gears and bigger tires will void the warranty for many dealers. By the time I trashed my rear locker, my rig was pretty far from stock. Thing only thing that looked or really was stock on my rear axle, was the locker and the brakes. Everything else had been worked, from new shock mounts and shaved LCA mounts to removing one UCA mount. I can't really say that I blame them for refusing to warranty it. I had 57K on the rig at that time. I went through two factory lockers, one rear and one front (placed in the rear). I've switched to a 35 spline ARB in the rear with the Alloy Mas Grande axle kit. Its been working fine since then. I do know of several folks that lost their rear locker. Some of these happened on 33's and at least two of them occurred while driving on the pavement.

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to figure how to build while I still have a ton of warranty left. I'm pretty sure I'm going to need it the way i'm beating it recently:skull:
