If it weren't for bad luck...

So, I wasn't even wheeling, and I blew up my Dana 35 tonight. The carrier cracked in half and looks to have chewed up the majority of the gears inside as well. And this vehicle is my DD, I am in desperate need of a repair or replacement asap.

My dream fix is that someone has a D44 laying around that has 3.73 gears and is ready to bolt in to a 01 TJ. But I am open to any suggestions at this point, as long as I can keep the cost down.

Please help!

Businesses, please P.M. me with solutions/quotes!

BTW. Dieter will probably be posting pics of the carnage here shortly.

It is not if you blow up a D35....but when. Sorry to hear about it. Good luck with the axle. Absolute Offroad should be able to help you out, but not until tomorrow at 8AM when they open. I hear they are a Currie dealer now..........

Just an FYI, these failures are typically due to excessively spinning one wheel. But I digress, hope you get it fixed soon. The great thing about blowing up a D35 is that you can always find a cheap replacement or it give you a really good reason to upgrade. :)

"Excessively spinning one wheel"... Are you implying that I have spent the last seven years pulling "one legger" burn outs whenever I get the chance?!? Well sir, you couldn't be farther from the truth! I stopped doing that about 3 months ago! About the same time I put on the 33's. I guess the 6+ years of abuse may have weakened it but I think the 33's may have been the final straw!

I have parts laying around to rebuild a d35 completely, but lately I seem to be using all my spares :aagh: I'd probably break if I loaned them out!

Anyways, Todd and Dave got a d35 in their shop ready to bolt in. I know because I almost had to buy it myself!

Man, I have called everyone. No luck on a cheap complete axle yet. I cant even find a 35 with 3.73's. Lots of people can rebuild the one I have. But i'm not sure I want that axle anymore (i know how it's been treated for the last 7 years. :laugh2:) So, still looking, and thinking of converting to an 8.8.

Dave said he had one for $100? You're not going to find an axle assembly for cheaper than that. The axle shafts alone are worth at least half that.

The only thing Dave had was d35 with 3.07's, Mark needs one with 3.73's.

I know this probably isn't an option but if he's in dire straits and can't get to work the axle with 3.07 gears will get him to work and back until he can swing having the ration swapped... just keep in in 2wd.

One thing I don't think many people realize is how much they can spin one tire when they are offroad and have an open diff. Think about it, you get high centered, you have 2 wheels completely off the ground and when you give it gas you spin just one tire on each axle. This make the spider gears spin like crazy which they are not designed to do, they loose lubrication and start to gall on the diff pin eventually seizing which shears the roll pin that holds the diff pin in and over the next couple of days or even possible weeks that diff pin works it's way out slowly until you have what, well, what you have. Going to larger tires typically breaks the axle shafts themselves due to the increased torque it takes to move them. You didn't break an axle shaft.

Sorry for being so abrupt, but I'm writing this for other people to see and possibly give them pause next time they're hammering on the gas with open diffs and spinning the tire that's in the air to 50 mph. Or the guys that go mudding and just have a blast hitting that skinny pedals throwing roosts of mud all over the place and at the same time killing the spider gears. Now I'm not saying you have done any of this, but typically that's what causes this type of failure.

i think one time i drove around my TJ for 3 months like that:aagh: And i took out the spider gears put the pin back in and no diff cover :aagh::aagh: Not the best idea but it worked

I'm concerned about running 33's with 3.07 gears. If it was 3.73's or higher for that price, I would jump on it.

Hey Guys and Gals,

I just wanted to say that I appreciate everyones input so far. I hope you guys don't think I'm being too picky here, and shooting down all the options. I just need to do this on a budget and at the same time I'd like to fix it once and then not have to mess with it for a long time. So, I'm still trying and looking. Please don't give up on me. Keep your ideas and finds coming, they really are greatly appreciated.

the carrier is prone to cracking near the screw for the center pin. Mine had a huge crack in it when i pulled it. Never let loose but it wasnt far behind.

Are you talking about the screw that holds in the pin for the spider gears? If so i have 2 of them and i also have the pin and some c-clips. If that is what you need to get back up and running
