I finally found my motivation. I read an article in JP mag about the nss and other than the obvious starting issues it mentioned "if your tranny is having problems shifting into overdrive, it maybe your nss". So I went to this web site for his write up on R&R of the nss, http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/ , I only did the cleaning of the contacts a little different, I used a Akansas hard oil stone instead of the emory cloth. It was very easy to do and did not take long at all.
The test drive afterwards seem to show that even the lower gears shifted more crisply and went into OD a whole lot better. I did not post any pics, there are very good pics with the write-up.
