Hey this is a post for my friend whos coming down for the 30th of sunday run at white tanks. He's currently in Idaho crossing into Utah and is having a severe oil leak on his cherokee. I dont know the year but I think its a 1992-1994, with a 4.0L- anyway he says he's lost 3 quarts of oil in 1 hour and its collecting in his air box. His air filter at this time is almost completely saturated with oil and he's considering removing it entirely.

What should he do? What in the world could cause such a loss of oil? He says his valve cover might be leaking but he cant tell cus theres oil everywhere, lol. He also says his PCV valve is possibly bad. I told him to get 4 quarts of spare oil before crossing into Utah desert but any additional information would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Sounds like a bad PCV is failing to depressurize the engine case.
Pistons pumping up and down pressurize the crankcase and force oil mist and spray out the only other exit which is into the air box where filtered air is supposed to be coming IN to the engine case.

Add to that the possibility of sludged up oil drainback holes in the head that allow too much oil to remain up top.

Cracked or worn rings could let blowby pressurize the engine enough to overwhelm the PCV.

Just a few thing that came to mind.

in all truth he could simply remove the pcv valve and plug the air box line.
its not exactly the best for the enviroment as it will create a good deal of CO & NOX emissions it would get him there.

if you dont plug the air box line you will have a huge exhaust leak and there will be idle issues.

be removing the pcv you are basically reverting to the 60's road draft tube in which blow by gasses from combustion were simply vented to the atmosphere.
vehicle should run fine besides the plugging of the air box.

just saw.... blown head gasket (excessive pressure to crankcase)?

I'd have to agree with Shaggy on this one.. This is fairly typical of High milage 4.0L
